Holy Goalie Set To Show What He Can Do With Crosses Tuesday, 25th Sep 2012 09:04 Saints new goalkeeper Artur Boruc nicknamed the Holy Goalie during his time with Celtic could be getting his first start against Sheffield Wednesday. Boruc is of course nicknamed the Holy Goalie not for the fact the ball seems to go straight through him at times, which is good because we have had a few of those over the years at Southampton, but because of his penchant for crossing himself before games and wearing a God Bless The Pope T Shirt during an Auld Firm derby in Glasgow. He is now set to get a start in the Capital One Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday as Nigel Adkins is keen to get him match practice as quickly as possible as Boruc has not played a game since May. This perhaps indicates that Adkins will go with Boruc as his first choice with Gazzaniga continuing to learn his trade from the bench over the coming months, although the Polish Glovesman only penning a one year deal seems to indicate that Saints have confidence in Gazzaniga being ready to step up to the plate in the near future, certainly his display against Aston Villa indicated this, although one good game doesnt make you the finished article. Boruc starting will be dependent on how he came through yesterday's training session and having proved that he is still fit enough to start, although goalkeepers dont need the fitness levels of outfield players they do need to still have a high level, not to mention the suppleness that comes with regular training.
