It's Curts Big Day - Let's Not Lose Sight Of It

In amongst the melee, the bed wetting through excitement and the wave of optimism that wins over Merthyr and Bridgwater seem to have generated it seems to go pretty much unnoticed that Saturday is also the testimonial game for Alan Curtis.

Putting it simply Curt is a Swansea legend. Always will be. For anyone that was fortunate enough to see him play you will never forget him. I even recall seeing him coming on in Keith Walker's testimonial match just after we had clinched the Div 3 title in 2000 and he looked better than most of our squad even then. The waistline was, putting it politely a little broader, but he still had the magic.

I'll never forget standing at the Vetch watching Curt score classic goals in the first division against the likes of Leeds and Southampton and I'll never forget the moment he won the Welsh Cup for Cardiff at the Vetch. That one hurt but even now I have to say - what a goal that was as well. It was a reminder that Curt could not be replaced.

I sincerely hope that people remember this for this weekend. It's easy to lose it in all the madness that surrounds the first game at the new stadium. I do almost feel sorry for Curt that he is having to share his big day with such a big day in our history. Maybe he could have had a game at the end of the season or maybe even pre-season last year but I guess there must be reasons.

I am slightly concerned at reports that he has to share the proceeds of the gate money. Message Board regular, Lorraine Corbett, who has been involved in several testimonials of the past recalls that in days gone by people worked for free and even as long back as Roger's testimonial the costs were minimal. The Vetch was hired for £1 I believe and many of the staff worked for free. It's a shame that couldn't happen for Curt because never can I remember a testimonial so well deserved.

He should be centre stage on Saturday as far as I am concerned, I just hope that we all remember that.

Curt you are a legend and you will always remain a hero to me!
