Swans Arrests Figures Down

Swans Fans Arrests Down

TAKEN FROM EVENING POST

Swansea City fans have dropped down the league of shame for football related arrests.

Last year the Swans topped the League One table of match day arrests with 63.

However, this year the number of arrests have fallen to 39.

The majority of those were for public disorder and alcohol related offences. Six fans were arrested for violence, two for throwing items onto the pitch and two for stepping onto the field. No fans were arrested for racist chanting.

At the same time the number of banning orders, which prevent known troublemakers from attending any matches, has risen from 20 to 45.

Club chairman Huw Jenkins welcomed the news. He said: "It is pleasing that, overall, they are coming down. Obviously the ideal situation is that you don't have any arrests at football matches. We do want the figures to come down and we want grounds to be safe."

With an average gate of around 12,500 and regular travelling support well into the thousands, Swans fans have been involved in a number of high-profile incidents over the past year as trouble flared at home and away games with Millwall, and the end of season last minute defeat at Oldham.

After the home game with Millwall last October five teenage yobs were handed banning orders.

Millwall recorded the second highest number of arrests among all League One teams with 57 arrests. Nottingham topped the league with 62. Local rivals Cardiff recorded 89 arrests in the Championship, coming fourth.

Mr Jenkins said that the rules regarding alcohol in football grounds, where booze is banned in the stands, needed to be looked at again. He believes fans are now proving that they are responsible and clubs preventing trouble.

He said: "I think football is very much discriminated against because of the alcohol. People are allowed to go to other events and drink. We are the only people in the country who have that against us."

Across the four senior football divisions in England and Wales, Swansea were 32nd for match day arrests, down from 14th last year.
