Coventry City will implement a full cashless stadium for home fans next season after successful trials

We reported back in March that a trial would take place at the Ricoh Arena for a cashless stadium at the end of last season.

The scheme proved to be a success and will now be implemented in all home fan areas for next season with just away fans able to buy things with cash inside the stadium.

The Coventry Observer reported last night that "the cards which will be used for supporters to buy food and drinks will also work as season ticket holder's tickets for the duration of the new campaign.

"Fans who have renewed their season tickets will receive their cards in the post ahead of the opening game on August 9 together with a complimentary £7 to spend at the first three home games.

"Staff dressed in lime green will hand out the plastic cards to non season ticket holders to use on a match by match basis.  A minimum of £5 needs to be uploaded to the cards which can be done with the staff in the consourse.  Any money not spent during the match can be withdrawn at designated kiosks or saved for future matches."

It is believed that several clubs are watching closely the success of the scheme with a view to potentially implementing it at their own grounds in the future.

Back in March, Coventry Chairman Ray Ranson said "When fans have gone through the turnstiles they should look out for the 'cashless payment' staff who will be dressed in lime green to top up their card with cash (minimum of £5).

"You then go to the kiosks to buy your refreshments and food and your card will be scanned to take the payment.

"If you want to refund the outstanding credit on your card, for one hour after half-time go to the staff at one of the cashless payment terminals in the concourses or you can keep the card to use at the next match."
