Songs For Players
Songs For Players

Where are all the songs for individual players at Saints gone.

In the past Saints fans have always tended to have special songs for individual players, but the trend seems to have died a death in recent years, or songs have been adapted from other clubs and lack originality. Yes we all know where the Northam/Kingsland/Chapel is, it is bearable once a game but not all the time and anyway Arsenal were doing it 30 years ago.

One of the earliest memories i have is from the early 70's when Mick Channon was honoured with a song to the words of an old Hymn, "Channon Channon, Channon Channon born is the king of Southampton" rang out from the Milton Road after another goal from the number 8.

Over the years other players got the benefit of their own anthems and sometimes not just the obvious ones either.

As the 90's arrived the songs became more prevalent again, although not always original, we walked in a Dowie Wonderland, we  Ooohed at Terry Hurlock,

Even with our move to SMS Saints fans still honoured the good great and sometimes not so great, Matt Le Tissier had perhaps the most well known chant

"Matt Le Tiss when he scores a goal he takes the P***" not exactly one for all the family but a genuine Saints original all the same, as was the "Francis Benali Society" ditty stolen from the Italian job, although the Benali Benali refrain was a steal from Red/blue Army chants.

In our latter premiership years there were still a few songs, Chris Marsden Football Genius rang out and of course "Our Claus in the middle of our defence" was one not heard elsewhere, but as we sank into the Championship we seemed to hear some new songs and adapt rather than innovate as we did before.

So perhaps with a few new heroes about to emerge its time to make up a few new songs, certainly Adam Lallana could be the recipient of at least one, back to the 70's and the Beatles Hey Dude was popular "La la, la la la la The Saints" was the adaption ideal for Lallana in some shape or form.

But why just stop at Lallana, surely Kelvin is worthy of his own song, Ricky Lambert could become the cult hero we have been longing for and Morgan Scheiderlin might just impose himself this season and dont forget Matt Patterson

What we Saints fans need to do is re create the Dell atmosphere and the St Mary's of six years ago and to do that we need to distinguish ourselves from the rest, and to do that we need original songs, lets have some that contain a little bit more than a few words and certainly lets have some that are original, well at least original words to a well know tune, anyone who has been in a few of the pubs around Anfield or Old Trafford will know of the rich vein of songs these clubs have and how quickly a song made up in the pub before the game is taken up by the crowd.

So do we have any budding Lennon/McCartney's out there ? lets see a few iddeas on the message board.
