The Glorious 12th For Shaw

Friday will be an important day in the footballing career of Luke Shaw as he will turn 18 and can sign a full professional contract.

Saints fans will be holding their breath this week as on Friday Luke Shaw turns 18 and can sign his first full professional contract and hopefully it will be for Southampton Football Club.

For the next few days though Saints fans will be waiting with baited breath and hoping that his head wont be turned by one of the so called big London clubs trying to snatch him from under our noses for a pittance at a tribunal.

All indications though are that this will not happen and that the player himself is happy to put pen to paper, knowing that from a footballing perspective he will be better learning his trade at St Mary's where he will play first team Premiership football than he will be at Chelsea or Arsenal where he wont get half as much game time.

Some Saints supporters will feel edgy in that they will remember how we got into similar situations with the likes of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, however there is a big difference now to back then, with those three players we were unable to offer them top flight football and obviously we were unable to pay them big wages either, now that has changed, if we were in the Championship it would be inevitable that Shaw would have moved, not just because of lack of Premiership games, but money and that would be a big factor, players themselves need security, with us in the Premiership he can get that at Saints, whereas Bale or Walcott for example couldnt, due to us being unable to compete financially, an injury can finish a young career, so dont blame say Chamberlain leaving for a five year £20k a year deal at Arsenal when the choice is under half that in the Championship.

So Saints have a far stronger hand to offer Luke Shaw than they have had with the three mentioned players over the last 7 years or so, this being the case i would hope that on Friday Saints will have some good news and that news being that Luke Shaw is now signed to this club for the long term.

If Shaw's signature materialises on Friday, it will be another great signal of the Club's amition. Holding to your best young players and attracting bigger names from outside is something that if combined, undoubtedly places a club into the elite category of worldwide top clubs. This is probably the first time it will happen to Saints to such a scale, so all indications will be there that we sould be absolutely happy to be Saints fans.

slynch added 18:33 - Jul 8 A major part of the plan is arranging finances so not ending up broke, so eat you can eat the fruit of the bush and then also afford to plant more bushes so you can end with a whole European Cup full of fruit...Or, is that carrying the metaphor just a little too far.

montecristo added 17:45 - Jul 12 well I wonder if there has been a last minute hitch.. no signature from Luke today, have Man U stolen in and prised him from us? I would be willing to bet that is exactly the scenario, look at the money that the Mancs would save by signing Shaw now and guaranteeing him first team football. Hold your breath but it doesnt look great.
