Alderweireld Says Saints Are In Front Of The Queue
Thursday, 14th May 2015 11:10

Toby Alderweireld has spoken of how he wants to sort out his future as quickly as possible and that Saints are in pole position for his signing.

Encouraging words from Toby Alderweireld but they come with words of caution as the ball is not in his hands at the moment and firmly in Athletico Madrid's at the moment who although they have agreed a fee with Saints for the player of around £7 million, also have an option to buy out that clause for £2 million and put the player on the open market, as of yet it is unclear just what the Spanish club will do and that is not a situation Alderweireld himself is comfortable with as he wishes to clarify his long term future.

Speaking to BBS Sport Alderweireld said.

“Southampton are in a good position because I know the club,"

“They are very good to me. I did a great job for them as well so we have a good connection. I really like the Premier League,”

“If Atletico want me back I have to listen. I can't give the answer, I really don't know.

“It's difficult for me in my head," Alderweireld continued. “Where am I going to live? Where am I going to play? I just don't know which way it is going to go. I hope it gets settled quite quickly so I can go into the summer and get prepared with the team I am going to play for.”

If Athletico invoke the buy out of the buy out, which I assume they will, there is nothing to stop Saints taking the £2m compo - and then using it towards pay the asking price.

For eg, Saints could say, we will give you £15m, and forget about the £2m buy out compo. It would then come down to wages. We sold Lovren for £20m, so £15m would be a bargain. Also, if we had to pay £20m, I would, but also by Van Dyke from Celtic as a better back up than Yoshia.

It's going to be an important summer as to who we bring in to be able to kick on next season. It would be great to be able to keep Toby. I'd prefer to see few, good quality signings rather than a number of "drifters". These signings can be very hit & miss and ultimately expensive!
