Paul Cook is refusing to look too far ahead at Pompey's Christmas fixtures as he takes his team to Northampton.

It's very much a game at a time for Cook, who knows the League Two leaders will give his own promotion-chasers a stiff test at Sixfields.

Cook told the Pompey website: 'It’s a fantastic achievement for them to be where they are at this stage and the reason for that is they’ve got a very good manager and very good players.

'There’s a long way to go, but they’re certainly doing extremely well as we approach the halfway point of the season. They deserve to be where they are and we’re in for a really tough game on Saturday, but it’s one we’re looking forward to.

'We’re hoping to take as many points as we can over this Christmas period, but football is all about clichés and it really is all about the next game as far as we’re concerned.'

Christian Burgess is expected to be out for a month - leaving Adam Webster and Matt Clarke to pair up in defence - while Paul Jones faces a few more weeks out after keyhole surgery.

But Gary Roberts, missing since October, is back in first team training.

Ricky Holmes is likely to feature for Northampton against the club for whom he was player of the season in 2013-14, but may have to settle for a place on the bench.
