Can Saints Make It Two Wins In A Row At Old Trafford ?
Wednesday, 20th Jan 2016 21:41

Over the years Saints wins at Old Trafford have been rarer than rocking horse droppings, so can they make it two wins in succession on Saturday.

Saints win at Old Trafford last season was the first win at Manchester United in the league since 1987/88 season and that in itself was our first League win there since 1969/70 which was incidentally the last time we won two in a row at Old Trafford with that 4-1 win following the previous season's 2-1 victory.

So can Saints repeat that feat from over 46 years ago this weekend when they attempt to make it back to back wins.

If they do then that would make it three visits in a row without defeat at Old Trafford for only the second time in our history the only previous occasion being in 1932/33, however there was a seven season gap between our draw in 1924/25 season and our win in 1931/32, so thats not the three season in a row that would be achieved if we at least drew on Saturday.

So can Saints do it ?

The answer is yes, confidence is high and United are a club in crisis, of course with the players that they have you can never be sure when they might click, but like Chelsea there is something wrong within the club that means that although they have the potential to beat most on their day, that day isnt that often these days.

So Saints travel to the North West knowing that they have more chance of winning at Old Trafford than perhaps any other time in their history, they go there with confidence and they go there with options.

It would be great to go there and do it, not just because of the joy in watching the faces on the tourists that pack Old Trafford these days, but also because it would truly make a statement that Saints season is far from finished and that perhaps a top six place and even European qualification is still possible.

Be very interesting to see the set up, mainly the midfield complications with the Wanyama conundrum, Romeu should be in, JWP a cert. now? etc.etc. All of a sudden an embarassment of riches perhaps. Then up front Pelle and Long in? Austin on the bench? Glad I've made that clear! Hope RK gets it right again. Good feeling about this.

Some difficult choices for Koeman, only problem is cover at the back, it could be a very attacking bench with Austin, Pelle and Tadic on it

hi nick
1-you never change a winning team

2- if rk changes one of the midfielders for a defensive midfielder then hes going there to park the bus.

3- rk is one of the most attack minded coaches in the epl if the players have trained well this week for the 1st time this season hes going to let them off the leish

4- for the 1st time since hes been here at long last hes got the squad he wants not ateam from 3-4 years ago .

5- attack attack attack no fear thats the way & the only way forward

Nick, can I respectfully suggest we all calm down a little?

Last week we beat two teams at home both of which will be mid table finishers at best. Our next three games are against opposition of a much higher quality, two of which are away from home and pretty certain to finish in the top six.

Whist not wishing to be a wet blanket let's not get too carried away. After all, we are the Saints and as we know from previous experience we have previous form in the foot shooting department.

Personally if we were to obtain three points from the next three games I would be happy. More and I would be surprised.

You're right to be cautious but the influence of confidence/momentum makes one hell of a difference, or lack of it as we've seen lately. My glass is usually half empty, but I reckon if we get a decent start we've got a good chance.

I agree with Saintmark. We have beaten two teams that under-performed on the day - that is great and may be we made them poor, but we went many games where at best we looked average. Momentum and confidence is good, but these next games will be a test.

Man U may be not what they were, but they are no mugs and difficult to beat, even though not entertaining to watch. Lets make sure we don't let them be entertaining. I don't believe they are a team in crisis, they are just not as good as many pundits think they should be or so called fans who have had it good for so long they have forgotten what average is.

I believe we can get something but it needs 98mins of total concentration.

I agree with SaintMark76 on this one but even so no harm in being a tiny bit optimistic - and I am hoping for 4 pts minimum over the three games!
