Saints Duo Get First England Call Ups !
Thursday, 16th Mar 2017 14:10

Saints fans will be surprised to hear that two of the squad have been called up to the full England squad for the forthcoming friendly and World Cup qualifyer.

James Ward Prowse and Nathan Redmond have come in for a certain amount of stick this season from a section of the Saints support, Redmond especially came in from abuse on social media in the first half of the season, however both now find themselves called up by Gareth Southgate for the friendly against Germany followed up by the important World Cup qualifyer against Lithuania.

To their credit neither has hidden during Saints matches and kept trying to play football in the right way and although those who always have to have a scapegoat could see no good in their play, many within the game were taking note of the way they were reacting to tough times.

It is again credit to Saints for not only their academy system which JWP has progressed through, but the way that Saints bring in the likes of Redmond, players with potential and then help them realise it.

Once again too many people jumped in with both feet to have a go at each to various degrees and have been shown that patience is the best course of action, not everything can work straight away in football and needs to be given time.

In Ward Prowse's case he burst on to the scene at a young age and has been a consistent member of the squad for almost five full seasons now, in some respects that has hampered him in that expectation has been high and he has had to develop in the full view of Saints fans rather than be able to come in to the side with experience.

Hopefully now he will kick on and become the player that he has often threatened to be, but has never quite been able to grasp with both hands (or feet) a run in the team has done his confidence a wealth of good, hopefully a call up to the full England squad will be the final piece in the jigsaw that makes him that player.

The full squad includes both Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand to make it 4 out of 26 for those at the club, but also includes 5 other ex Saints including Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who came through our academy.

Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Torino, on loan from Man City), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Michael Keane (Burnley), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), John Stones (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Michail Antonio (West Ham), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Man Utd), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Nathan Redmond (Southampton), Raheem Sterling (Man City), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Jermain Defoe (Sunderland), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Jamie Vardy (Leicester).

England must be hard up if they have to pick James Ward Prowse. I wouldn't have him the Saints team by choice.

well done both..despite this being a low ebb for england, this is another feather in the clubs cap and increases its attractiveness to players.

We nearly always agree vanmans! The good news is that with JWP's now higher profile a few bids might come in but don't hold your breath. The silence from the top 6 has been deafening and not just because the chairman said "we don't like to keep selling our players". One could say much the same thing about Redmond, one good performance doesn't make a great player.

Good luck to them 'though, England have a long tradition of failure at international level so they are joining good company.

England need midfield players who are slow, can't tackle & only pass sideways or backwards. Good job JWP fits the bill.
