Saints Willing To Let Jordy Clasie Go
Monday, 21st Aug 2017 12:27

According to Sky Sports Saints are willing to listen to offers for Dutch International midfielder Jordy Clasie.

Jordie Clasie has not had the best of luck during his two years at Saints, firstly he was injured on his debut for the club against Vitesse in the Europa League which meant he missed the first two months of the Premier League season and then he found himself marginalised in the second half of last season under Claude Puel.

But he did play some godo games for the club and was instrumental in the second half of his first season as Saints stormed to a sixth place finish.

Last season saw him as a regular in Claude Puel's early line ups as well as being used off the bench, but then suddenly after the New Year he found himself mysteriously dropped and at times unable to even get on the bench.

It was strange given his pivotal role in our League Cup run with a fine strike at Arsenal and playing 73 minutes of the semi final first leg against Liverpool at St Mary's.

But then he was deemed surplus to requirements by Puel and after the end of January he would only appear three more times, the first as sub at Watford in the last 3 minutes and then two starts firstly at West Brom where he was arguably man of the match and scored a superb winning goal, his reward for this was to be dropped and not appear again for another 5 weeks.

His last appearance and perhaps his last for the club was at Middlesbrough where he again starred in a 2-1 win starting the move for the opening goal and putting in a good shift.

Now he finds his opportunities limited with the arrival of Mario Lemina and although in an ideal World Saints would keep him, the reality is that we are top heavy in the centre of the park and he will find it hard to get game time.

It therefore makes sense to sell him on and rake in at least the £8 million he cost back in 2015, freeing up a space in the squad and putting some money in the transfer kitty.

I for one will be sad to see him go, for reasons seemingly beyond his control he never really got the chance toget his career at St Mary's going at anything other than a stop start pace, I think we did not see the best of Jordy Clasie and now probably never will at least in a Saints shirt.

But he was not a failure at Saints, far from it, he made vital contributions in both of his full seasons at the club and without them the chances are we might never have achieved a sixth place finish, nor reached Wembley last season, I wish him well should he move on in this transfer window.

I personally wish him all the best. I don't think he did much wrong, although I wonder if Puel considered him maybe a little bit too lightweight. Obviously Konman must have liked him.

I don't think Jordie is cut out for the EPL. He came to us with a pretty good reputation and even declared that he wanted his son to be born here. Unfortunately, not too many players as slight in stature are robust enough for our football. Being small doesn't count so much but they need to be thickset, at least from the waist down. I, too, wish him well.

I don't think this has anything to do with Puel. Pellegrino would have assessed him as not good enough, unless all of these decisions really are made by Les Reed. Lemina appears to be a much better player. So, offloading Clasie makes sense. Who will buy him though? We'll probably have to accept a loan deal.

Have to agree. Struck me as a skilful player who always put in 100%, unfortunately was a lightweight (not his fault!), and isn't really up to it in a fairly physical EPL. Good luck to him wherever he goes!

I think there are some politics in play with this decision and it's timing.

Krueger has stated that "no player is for sale that we do not want to sell". With less than two weeks to go to the end of the transfer window when traditionally the whole thing starts to heat up and deals get done, this might be the club saying which players are available for sale but we are setting the agenda not the vested interest of national newspapers.

Quite obviously Jordie Classe is not a first team regular but is the most experienced of the senior players outside that group so this may signal to the vultures the level of player who the Club are prepared to let go. Since no PL club has been linked with Jordie that sends out a massive signal about our intentions as far as regular first team players that the vultures are sniffing around.

As for Jordie, I will be very sad to see him go. He seems to me to be a lovely lad with good character, a fantastic work ethic and a much needed permanent smile that must warm other hearts on the training ground and in the "locker" room.

Was he ever given a fair chance here by Koeman, Puel or Pellegrino? One doubts that very much, he is after all a Dutch international and ex-Captain of Rotterdam.

Shame, good squad member - but I understand we cant keep everyone.

I agree with SaintBrock. However, I have to add that I just can't see what the difference is between him, Davis and JWP--if anything he's better. All three are pretty lightweight. Davis is on his last leg being 32. JWP has been given more than enough game time to prove himself and he hasn't done it. I still can't justify him being in the starting eleven and it's been 4-5 years. To be quite frank I don't see him getting dramatically better. We should bare in mind he's from the same year group as Shaw and only a couple of years below Oxlade-Chamberlain. The players I've mentioned are both saints academy graduates who are more than capable playing for a top 6 team. Is JWP in that bracket? Definitely not! Yet both players were snapped up with barely a couple of seasons experience. The reason is simple, because they are quality players. JWP isn't a quality. He's at best a good player.

Clasie at the very least has played in a World Cup, captained Feyenoord and is about to reach the peak levels of his career. He's isn't quite a starter but would more than make a decent squad player. For us to let him go over JWP and Davis is nothing short of ridiculous!

Bit of a coincidence that El Duce( tinpot dictator) Reed see's his "precious" start on the bench, so gets rid of possible competition 2 days later. If, here's hoping, that Mr Plod is on the bench again next Saturday, will El Duce put hodgepot on sale the following Monday?

I'll be sorry to see him go but the squad and wage bill clearly aren't infinite. If he can get regular game time elsewhere what would be the point of keeping him here on the fringes? We all have our perceptions of each squad member's value to the team but seeing as Davis was instrumental in gaining the first penalty on Saturday and JWP was instrumental in gaining the second penalty I can see why they might be considered higher up the pecking order. Good luck to Jordie wherever he goes, I'll never forget that screamer at West Brom.

Lovely lad and has improved. He should have been loaned out in early days to toughen up but I fear he is too lightweight to be an EPL player.
Hope he still has a good future in English football, rare to see a Dutchman not chasing the money.

Larry, what the heck are you on about ? I don't know who Mr Plod or hodgepot are , and don't particularly care. As far as I can recall since 2010 when he was appointed Les Reed has overseen ALL the transfers into the club so how can he be influencing anyone being sold. The selling of Lallana, Mane, Pelle etc. was a board decision, not just a Les Reed one. The loaning out of Reed and Gallagher and the selling of JRod and making Clasie available for transfer is the manager's decision again nothing to do with Les Reed.

pete_boggs added 17:01 - Aug 21
All the sales and purchases are sanctioned by Les.

Is JWP or Davis or Hoj better than Clasie I don't think so. Les is moving him on because he is a Koeman purchase. Another mistake by Reed.

Good player, just the wrong team in week 2 of the new campaign. Played good for saints when given the chance but lacking managers faith To continually play him. Needs to play Europe Football possible Italy or Spain. Still think that a player with huge potential, has the touch for goal that Oriol Romeu and Davis lack. Has been and still is a great servant for the saints. If he goes I wish him the best for the future. If he stays all the better for saints and option to loan out to a team to let him shine!

Ps! I really think saints will do TOP 6 this season. Few tweaks n we are set. Goal at home curse is over!!!

I just don't understand why we have any "lightweight" players. Surely our highly rated training facility has to have a weight room in it? With all the training resources available these days, these three should have been able to put on some muscle.

JWP is a good player, but it astonishes me when TV announcers continue to mention him in the same breath as Beckham, as they did again the last game ( Doubt he even likes it, as it adds more pressure.). If he was at that level, we would have 10 extra goals from free kicks every year for the last 3-4 years! No....wait......we wouldn't, because Les would have sold him to the Scouse as soon as he scored his first one.

Think it would be a mistake to let him go so soon he hasnt really had a good run in the team.
'Barn door' Davis now 32 and maybe his last season for us,could get injured this year and Classie can definatly shoot better than him.
If MP is gonna play Davis in advanced role Classie would be better suited.
Why dont they just loan him out with a recall if needed he might show more with regular football.
Somebody posted their opinon on JWP saying hes had plenty of chances, well he is only 23 and his best is yet to come,he did win us the game saturday with his great cross to Yosh and who else can cross the ball better?
Selling Jay and gambling on Sam and Long to get goals was a mistake in my opinion and selling Classie might prove to be another one, just loan him our saints!

Boondocksaint Your first sentence reads like a letter to the Viz magazine.
As for Reed selling him at first free kick he scored well he has one to his name already and seeing as Reed is standing tough on the VVD sitation that doesnt apply right now.

I cannot get my head around anyone saying Claise is better or even anywhere near as good as Davis, and I think whilst JWP and hoijbjerg aren't perfect I'd still have all of them (and Romeu and - based on his fee as I'd not seen him play before - Lemina) ahead of Claise in the pecking order. So he's the obvious one to suffer from Lemina coming in. My only concern is that means we are back to having just two central defensive midfielders (Romeu and Lemina) so if we want to play with two holding midfielders both Romeu and Lemina need to be fit. If we want to play with one holding and one box to box then I guess it makes sense, plus if he's not right (for him or the club) for a new contract now is the time to sell and get cash in while the market is hot.

It might be that he has asked to go. He is a footballer and not playing football is probably making him quite unhappy inside despite the smile. He looked really happy in training today so the chances are he'll get a start on Wednesday - cynics will say to put him in the shop window - but we have a responsibility to ourselves to keep all our players match fit and at least we have not insulted the lad by asking him to play with the stiffs.

If he does play this week than I for one will applaud him all the way onto the pitch and at the end all the way off, late train or no bloody late train. It could be the last time we'll see him.

Good player, but sometimes moves just don't work out. I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job for a club or league better suited.

AmericanSaint added 20:24 - Aug 21
I don't understand this move. Classie is not defensive/holding midfielder. he is about pace, guile and passing. I think he plays more consistently than JWP. I said this before that Davis needs to become a bench player (I know you all will hate that) as he is 32 and slower and is a holding/defensive midfielder. He doesnt score enough or make assists to rate starting. While he has been a great player for Saints, his time as a starter is over. I think we should lone out Classie for the season to Newcastle or Huddersfield and see how he does in the Prem. And finally for all the comments of his "lightweight" body, that is nonsense. The Dutch league is not push over when it comes to physicality, like say the Italian or Spanish leagues. Just two cents.

£8m??!!

Can't we do a Liverpool/Spurs and demand a 4x increase on our players? His playing record is significantly better than Wimmer or Sakho and their prices have quadrupled.

Agree with the overall assessment. Jordy is a good player BUT in a position where he is not first choice. He was bought TWO managers ago, and now Pellegrino has his own plans and sadly Jordy will " fall between the cracks". He has his qualities and will undoubtedly look better playing for a club where he gets regular game time. Also from the Saints viewpoint his lack of goalscoring hasn't helped with his selection.

What I want to know is...what's happened to Josh Sims? He should be loaned out to a Prem or Championship team like Sam Gallagher. He's too talented to be playing U23s. Let him get real experience. He should pushing for a first team place next season. If we're not careful he could become another Lloyd Isgrove.
