Ex Saint's Tweet Fuels Balotelli Rumours
Wednesday, 10th Jan 2018 22:50

Ex Saints star Leandre Griffit has started a rumour mill meltdown after hinting that a big star could be on his way to Southampton.

Mario Ballotelli has been hinting that he would like a return to the Premier League in the past few weeks, although he has said he would join former club Manchester City for free as that is where he truly enjoyed his football.

Since leaving City in 2013 the Italian has been a bit of a nomad, joining AC Milan, Liverpool, AC Milan again and then Nice whom he joined on a free transfer in August 2016, his time at Nice has not been without controversy, but he has found form and this season has scored 10 times in 13 appearances.

He has only signed one year deals at Nice and is only under contract till the summer so would be available for a fairly low fee and at 27 still has some good years left in him.

Balotelli is being linked with Saints after a tweet from former Saints player Leandre Griffit who said when commenting on Saints.

I think the fans will get a Nice gift this winter .. some big names is coming.😷😷, canot say it , .@SouthamptonFC @SouthamptonFCFR

This has prompted some Saints fans to go into a mini frenzy although nothing really concrete has come out into the press other than this tweet.

Further frenzy was forthcoming when Balotelli was not named in the Nice squad to face Monaco who themselves started another Saints alleged target, striker Guido Carrillo.

That has seen social media suggesting that the Italian striker was on his way for talks with an as yet unamed club.

So will bad boy Balotelli be on his way to St Mary's to save Saints, certainly if he did arrive it would fire the imagination of the supporters and offer Saints some fire power up front.

One advantage of the deal if it happened is that this is one Saints player Liverpool would be unlikely to be chasing in the future, both player and Liverpool do not seem to have fond memories of one another.

Well at least it would be an entertains event filled relegation scrap

I would take it as a curveball as long as there was another striker signed as well but this would be the most un saints like signing and are memories still to fresh from the Osvaldo mess up ?

Would he work with gabs up front in an Italy double header ? That would just be way too much to ask

I'm quite excited by the prospect. Even if it is a bit reminiscent of our signing of Henri Camara

We should put all of our efforts into recruiting Martin O’Neil before he goes to Stoke. If he does go to Stoke that’s another team that will finish above us...

This is old news .... The Tweet was made about 2 weeks ago wasn't it? Surely something would have been done by now if it was going to? Oh wait a minute ... I forgot, this is Southampton .... I meant Jan 31st 2359, debut in March, crocked or Sent Off in 1st game, contract cancelled before he completes ban/back to fitness after punch up with Lemina over Buy a Tellys ex and Lemina's current bit of fluff!!

I am getting old - I don't even remember Leandre Griffit. Was he really a 'star'? As for this rumour - sounds rubbish to me.

33 goals in 49 appearances for Nice so far over a season and a half. Would certainly improve the average of current forward options!

This sounds like yet another "outsider" for those of you who like long odds.
Problem is that we only recall those good goals he scored, and not the problem child he was / later became. For me, he is just... " a firework waiting to explode".
Surely we should have learned a lesson from Pochettino's insistance on signing Dani Osvaldo way back when - what an expensive exercise that turned out to be.

A signing like MB would sound like a real panic move, There must be better prospects around that we can pick up - after all it's not as if we don't have the money to invest.

This is old news. The rumour has been circulating for 2 or 3 weeks now. Can't see it happening. It would certainly make life around the club exciting though !

At least his recruitment would be educational, most fans having just about learned how to pronounce and spell G-A-B-B-I-A-D-I-N-I can now practice B-A-L-O-T-E-L-L-I !
