There really is more to transfers than a lot of people seem to think.
"Targetting" someone doesn't mean that we can expect to sign them when the next window opens. The player may lose form, or get injured and so we have to put that idea on the shelf . Nor can we say to a club.. we'll offer you £x million next year- if we still need him by then.

£75 million is a lot of money, and knowing that we have made a deal of that size, many clubs (or even the players agent) suddenly up their demands, knowing that we have money (or at least part of it), as these deals are often made in several annual payments, and I'm sure Saints didn't bank the whole £75 mill. on January 2nd.

If wedo back out - the selling club may be forced to drop the price to an alternative buyer just to get rid of the player. Although it was very much a head/heart question, I didn't expect Walcott to return to SMS, but only time will tell if Everton got a good deal.

A lot has been written already about our League postion and MP as manager, but the fact remains that (unless he stays) ...the NEXT manager will want to spend money too, remembering that 7-8 players were brought in during Koeman's first year, and the days when Saints could bring in " a good prospect " for a £10-12 million maybe long gone.

The £75 million deal may become an albatross around our necks for some years to come,
as clubs seek to get a bigger share than the player may be worth. On paper we (may) have a lot of money, but we can only spend it once, and it may be many years before we have another player in the VvD category. With hindsight the £36 mill.(?) that we got for Mane would now look good at twice that fee.

YES, I'm as impatient as the rest of you to bring in "the right players", but I don't envy those people who will make the decisions on who those players are likely to be.

Get it right, and it's no more than expected, get it wrong ..and they'll be damned for life.
