Saints Duo Free To Negotiate St Mary's Exit
Tuesday, 27th Feb 2018 09:04

Saints are said to be willing to let two of their players speak to other clubs after not offering them contract extensions.

It will be no surprise to Saints fans that Saints are happy to let Florin Gardos leave St Mary's in the summer, the centre back has only played one first team game in three years due to a combination of injury and being out of favour with various managers.

In fairness to Gardos the first half season with Saints under Ronald Koeman saw him put in a number of decent displays as deputy to Jose Fonte and Toby Alderweireld and he let no one down, however after being dropped by Koeman after being substituted before the half hour mark in a dour defeat at West Brom he never played again in the Premier League, injury then kept him out for a season, but any hopes he had of getting back under Mauricio Pellegrino were soon dashed and he was allowed to go on loan for the rest of this season.

Jeremy Pied was injured early last season and missed all but the last three games, he was always seen as only back up to Cedric Soares and therefore his chances have always been limited even this season when he has only played two Premier League games plus a start against Wolves and a sub appearance against Watford in the cups.

However as a free transfer to rejoin his old mentor Claude Puel, Pied has been a cheap gamble that although not coming up trumps has plugged the gap a few times.

We may yet see Pied again this season although it seems Saints will not offer him a new deal and that being the case both he and Gardos are now free to negotiate with other clubs for next season although both have played relatively minor roles in their time at St Mary's but neither let the club down and Saints fans should wish them well for the future.

When selected, or on as a sub, JP has done a good job. Worthy of the shirt as a 'utility' squad player. Always been positive in his attitude..... even when he was out with that cruel injury at the start of his stint here. Wish him well what ever he chooses to do.

Pied hasn't looked bad and I'm not sure Gardos is any worse than Bednarek. But, if we still aspire to be a top ten team, we should be looking to upgrade on players like these. Let's hope their replacements really are an improvement as most of the new players we've bought in the 2 years since our 'black box' Paul Mitchell left, have been a downgrade on the players we've sold. Wanyama and Schneiderlin> Romeu and Clasie, Pelle and Mane > Carrillo and Redmond, Fonte and van Dijk > Hoedt and Bednarek etc.

Im not surprised with Gardos but very surprised on Pied who to me has looked decent whenever he’s been in the team. Strange one Pied particularly as we have no other decent right backs after Cedric although they have offered Jan Valery a new contract and I hear he is good ,a young French international.

In answer to dirk doone who has cherry picked the best and worst examples of our selling and buying.Yes there were some duds but mainly they have been as good as or better..
clyne>cedric equal if not better. Romue got player of the months a few times last year id say he was as good as schneiderlin
id say Lemina is better than Wanayama. Hoedt may well turn out to be better than a fading Fonte .Ditto Bednarek who cant be judged on a couple of games!
Gabbi and or Austin for Pelle who fans seem to have forgotten went thro lean spells with us and wasnt the goal machine they imagined. Again Carillo cant be judged yet on handfull of games.
The only one not replaced in my opinion is Mane and thats why Liverpool stumped up then their second ever highest transfer fee.Could say the same about VVD but the juries on on our current cb pairing.
Mane hasnt been setting the Pl alight this season and if Boufal is given time he could turn onto quite a player.
Redmonds 8 Pl goals and the winner v Liverpool shows if played right and fans get off his back he can be top player. We got them both for the price of Mane.
The players are good enough as they proved under RK then last year under a 'clueless' manager the problem is that Mp is even worse.

Sorry saintpp, but I've seen enough of Saints players current and past to be able to judge. Redmond will never be a "top player" as you put it unless he has a complete change of attitude. Put simply (much like Tadic) he doesn't like the physicals and when he makes mistakes he too readily moans at others. He was not picked regularly for Norwich when the were relegated from the Premiership and this season could well be a mirror image for him.

Saintpp-
I must disagree! Mane may not be "setting the PL alight this session", but, much as he did at Saints, when he is not scoring, he is drawing the defense and making space for his team mates. Our two only complain to their team mates!

According to Premier League.com stats for 2017/2018

Mane 7 Goals 5 Assists

Boufal 2 Goals 2 Assists

Redmond 0 Goals 3 Assists

If you were to take a door-to-door, or rather, bin-to-bin survey of their supporters,
asking: Would they trade Mane for those two? I very much doubt they would!

Pied is a very good understudy so it makes me wonder who is going to take his place, we have no youngsters match ready so unless were getting Clyne back this seems not a good move, as for Gardos he has been really unlucky with injuries but again was only back up unless he excelled but I suppose we have the young pole who needs time a lot of time to fill that gap,may be we should release our manager and just don't have one until the end of the season I'm sure the results would improve coyr

Let’s face it. Redmond isn’t top premiership . Boufal - it’s a bit early to tell - but I doubt it. He reminds me of Fabrice Fernandes (2002 -5): excellent at passing - from his left foot to his right; superb at beating the ground in front of him and to the side and inevitably also the ground behind him. But as to making a difference to the match : his strike rate is heading for Fabrice ( 91 appearances, 5 goals) and irrelevance , his goals against West Brom and Sunderland not withstanding.

Boufal is a frustrating player. Bench player at best imo. I hope he improves soon.
SIms is our best winger at the moment and should start on saturday.

Not sure where you picked up the vibe about Jeremy Pied, Nick but he is one damn good player who sadly has been cursed by bad luck so has never been able to sustain a challenge to Cedric Soares.

Once again above many people are speculating about the quality of Sims which is totally unproven and based upon a few 10 minute cameos. Let's see what he's like when doing the full 90 and been 'reduced' by Shawcross and his ilk. He is a small and fragile lad and will probably get clobbered out of games by the bully boys. Don't put too much expectation on his shoulders, Messi Jnr he is not!
