Saints Involved With 3 Of The Top 10 Fastest Premier League Goals
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2019 10:40
Shane Long's goal at Watford was the fastest in Premier League history, but this isn't a rare event for Saints fans to watch with three of the top ten featuring Saints.
Shane Long put Saints ahead in 7.69 seconds at Watford shaving almost 2 seconds off the previous record held for 18 years by 09.82 by Ledley King when he scored for Spurs at Bradford City in 2000/01.
It is hard to see Long's new record being beaten, to do so would probably mean someone scoring with a direct shot from the half way line as the game kicked off.
The current top ten fastest goals contains two other's that involve Saints, one that we scored and one scored against us.
James Beattie scored for us back in season 2004/05 at Chelsea when on 28th August he netted after only 13.52 seconds and he stands at number 9 in the table of fastest goals. Sadly for us that was as good as it got in that game, Beattie scored again in the 34th minute but in his own net and then Frank Lampard Jnr penalty 7 minutes later and that ended the scoring for a 2-1 defeat.
Sitting at number 10 is the goal against us, this was scored by a player who we could be facing on Saturday although it is more likely he will be on the bench, ironically the man he scored it against is the man keeping him out of the Bournemouth team, Asmir Begovic scored for Stoke City in 2013/14 season and the man letting it in was Artur Boruc.
There are more coincidences, in that up front for Stoke that day was Peter Crouch who came off the bench at Stamford Bridge and also Nathan Clyne was at right back for Saints and might well be sitting next to Begovic at St Mary's on Saturday.
The only survivor still playing for Saints back on 2nd November 2013 at Stoke is James Ward Prowse who just before half time put in a sublime cross for Jay Rodriguez to head home the equaliser in the 1-1 draw.
