Premier League Clubs United To Finish The Season

All top-flight clubs were represented during a video conferencing call today in which the primary topic of conversation was a debate over models for completing the season according to Sky Sports.

Sky Sports reports that all the clubs were united in their desire to finish the season whatever and various models of how that might be done were considered.

However they did not discuss the suggested June 30th finish or the impact that players contracts ending on that date would have if the season extended into July.

A Premier League spokesperson said:

"We are acutely aware of the distress COVID-19 is causing and our thoughts are with all those directly affected by the pandemic.

"In common with other businesses and industries, the Premier League and our clubs are working through complex planning scenarios. We are actively engaging with stakeholders, including broadcast partners, and our aim is to ensure we are in a position to resume playing when it is safe to do so and with the full support of the Government.

"The health and well being of players, coaches, managers, club staff and supporters are our priority and the League will only restart when medical guidance allows.

"Today's shareholders' meeting provided an opportunity to discuss possible scheduling models. It remains our objective to complete the 2019/20 season but at this stage all dates are tentative while the impact of COVID-19 develops."

SaintPaulVW added 17:13 - Apr 17 Even season 20/21 has to be in doubt at present. Are we all seriously going to be packed into a stadium in just 4 month's time? How are players going to be expected to play a contact sport when social distancing will need to still be in force until a vaccine is developed? It would be an employment lawyer's dream.

I really hope that I'm proven wrong but I just can't see the 2019/20 season being completed.

Corona virus death and infection rates would have to diminish rapidly from their current levels before it becomes socially acceptable for matches to be played even behind closed doors. How would the government sell day to day continuation of social distancing to the general public whilst allowing a contact sport between large numbers of players, managers, coaches and back up teams?

Add in the fact that presumably there would need to take place a three or four week player pre season let alone the prospect of fans attending matches outside of closed grounds and to me it looks like a complete non starter.

I'm not even convinced that the 20/21 season will resume on time as a sport where spectators can attend inside the stadiums.

Even if games are played behind closed and this is highly unlikely as no vaccine in sight, how would this effect season ticket holders as we would still not be attending the game? I really hope the club doesnâ€™t undo all its good PR work of recent weeks.
