The Latest Central Defender To Be Linked Is ......
Thursday, 28th May 2020 08:23

This morning's rumour in the press is that we are competing with Wolves and Watford for Real Vallodolid defender Mohamed Salisu.

The 6ft 3 Ghanian defender is having just turned 21 in his first season of first team football with the Spanish club and fits the bill that Saints would look for despite his lack of experience.

He is also said to have a release clause in his contract at £10 million and that in itself has made some clubs sit up and notice.

But Saints could be the first choice for him as Wolves already have a plethora of central defenders and he would be unlikely to step straight into their first team and Watford's fate for next season is far from clear.

That makes Saints with their reputation for offering young talent a chance favourites.

This isn't the first time that Salisu has been mentioned with a move to St Mary's and the Spanish media seems to be of the impression that Real Vallolid are looking to cash in, the £10 million is a release clause, not a fixed sale price, so competition could push that value up.

I like the way Wolves are dismissed because of their plethora of centre backs.
As a reminder, we ourselves currently have Bednarek, Stephens, Vestergaard, Danso, Hoedt and Yoshida !! A lot of work needs to be done in this area, which have proved problematic for at least 3 years now. Yoshida will be gone once this season is over and no doubt Danso will be returned. I am sure we will listen to offers (if any, despite what the player himself says) for Hoedt and probably Vest - maybe Leicester will come back in for him ? !!
That could leave us with just 2 average players, so we definitely need 2 signed up if we let 4 go - unless we plan to use Romeu or Bert as CBs.

Anyone know much about Salisu ? Is he too young and inexperienced for us ? They said that Danso was a good fit and an international, but look how that worked out !!
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we should have paid the money and signed Cahill for a couple of seasons and he would have helped educate Bednarek and Stephens.
