Saints Linked With Middlesbrough Central Defender
Thursday, 4th Jun 2020 08:51

The latest to be linked with a move to Saints as well as other Premier League clubs, actually looks like he could be a good signing.

The man in question is Dael Fry who will turn 23 in August who has blossomed in the past two years, after failing to capitalise on initial promise when making his first team debut at 16.

At 6ft 4 inches he would add height to the Saints defence, but in many respects the question would be is he any better than Jack Stephens whose career path is vaguely similar with both having loan spells in the Championship that were not successes, Stephen's one being ironically at Middlesbrough where he would have worked with Fry who despite being a several years younger was preferred to Stephens.

Everton are also said to be interested in the player, although it has to be said that former Boro player Ben Gibson whose career has nosedived at Burnley might represent a better bet.

The fee for Fry is said to be in the region of £20 million which is way above his rating of around £5 million on transfermarkt.

This one although a little more promising than some of the players mentioned still has the smell of an agent trying to get a good deal for his client around it.

Great news if true. I've been saying on here that we should buy Fry in every transfer window since 2015 when I saw him as an 18-year-old putting in a man of the match performance against our U21s at Staplewood, and his value has just kept rising.

Agreed, but £20m seems a touch too much in the current economic situation. Unless of course Middlesbrough is one of the big clubs queuing up for Hoedts signature.

Highfield, think of it as an investment: Fry is going to be worth a lot more than that in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the conditions of Ralph signing a new 4-year contract was that the club agreed to buy Fry. He knows how much we need a good central defender if we are to progress on the pitch.

Enter the race for him just to spike the price for Everton.

As Nick alludes to, we could do a lot worse than Ben Gibson.

And £20m sounds an awful lot for Fry given our financial situation.
