Youthful Saints Side Lose To Wycombe
Saturday, 22nd Aug 2020 09:09

Saints first friendly of the new campaign saw Wycombe Wanderers arrive at St Mary's to take on a young Saints side.

This was more of a U23 run out for Saints, Alfie Jones, Josh Sims and Tom O’Connor who all spent last season out on loan featured as did Callum Slattery and Jake Hesketh.

The first half was goalless but Saints had several good chances after the half hour mark, in the second half Saints made changes and the average age of the side dropped further.

The only goal of the game came just before the hour and although they could not get the goal needed to equalise, the Saints youngsters gave a good account of themselves and were more than a match for Wycombe who themselves had a number of trialist's in their side.

It was a good run out for those on the fringes of the first team squad and the likes of Slattery and Sims will be looking to show Ralph Hassenhuttl that they could be valuable members of his squad next season after successful loan spells.

It would be really nice to see some of them step up to the first squad next season. They should be looking at that squad and be saying 'wait a minute I have got a chance to fill a gap here' and make a now or never pledge to themselves. Good luck to all of them. COYS
