Southampton Interested In AFC Bournemouth Forward
Wednesday, 24th Mar 2021 09:27

It's International week so the football gossip columns are looking for stories and the latest one involving Saints is that we are vying with Brighton for AFC Bournemouth forward Danjuma.

Finding out information about Danjuma is not simple, firstly you have to realise that Danjuma is the name he wears on his shirt, his proper name so to speak is Arnaut Groeneveld.

The 24 year old signed for the Cherries in the summer of 2019 for a shade under 14 million from Club Brugge in Belgium although he is a Dutchman born in Nigeria just to confuse matter a little.

He started at PSV but left for NEC in 2016 without making an appearance for the first team, at NEC he built up his reputation with 12 goals in 40 games before nipping into Belgium to play for Club Brugge in 2018 for a season, 5 goals in 20 games in the Jupilo League earned him his move to Bournemouth in the summer of 2019.

But his season in the Premier League was not great, he spent much of the time injured, first with a hamstring and then a fractured foot, but even when fit he struggles to get in the side, he was in the squad on 19 occasions but started only 6 games and came off the bench on another 8 occasions, but in the other 5 games he stayed in his seat including our trip there at the end of last season, as they say in cricket he failed to trouble the scorers.

This season he has flourished in the Championship playing out wide for Bournemouth on either side, he has played 25 league games, 21 of them in the starting line up and 4 off the bench and started to show the form that has earned him 2 caps for the Netherlands ironically under former Saints boss Ronald Koeman.

Danjuma has a lot of pace and can hit a shot, the Cherries only decent effort was his tight angled shot saved well by Fraser Forster. He was superbly marshalled by Kyle Walker Peters who barely gave him a kick.

But the question is, is he Premier League class ?

When I have seen him on TV in the Championship he looks to have plenty of pace and knows where the goal is, but he is playing against Championship sides, if we look at Sunday when he played against us it was a different matter and up at the other end Nathan Redmond was having a far better game, if you were a watching club scout and you were looking at Redmond & Danjuma, based on Sunday there would be only one choice and that is Redmond.

So is there any truth that Brighton & ourselves are in for Danjuma ? truth is I can't see it at this stage of the season, the transfer window is still two months away and it is international break week, the media is scratching for news, agents are starting to try and get their clients in the shop window, that perhaps gives you an indication of why we are being linked.

We are also going to raid Bristol City for 3 players. Probably best that way so that they can share a car to cut down on the cost of travelling to us.

I don't know about trebles all round but certainly large pinches of salt are in order.

Its fair to say that Danjumas only attempt came when Redmond made a sloppy pass and put us in trouble. I think if Danjuma had been in our side, the result would have been no different and I can't imagine that Redmond would have performed in the same manner if he were on the other side.. Based on Sunday is not the best of scientific tests Nick, therefore I can't agree with your conclusion. I don't believe the stats for Redmond have been particularly good in the time period you mentioned anyway. Bournemouth were a poor depleted team on Sunday and this is Redmonds level as things stand, until that is, he puts in some performances like that in the Prem, otherwise, I would prefer to have a new face like Danjuma, who looked decent in a poor side. Redmond did play well but he wasn't exactly challenged for his first goal by a defender..

We have Redmond, Armstrong, Djenepo & Tella, all 4 of them showing some form at the minute, so per today we don't need Danjuma badly as I see it. But it's always good with new blood in the squad, and if Ralph and people around him really are interested in Danjuma I have no objections though I'd rather see us land a central midfielder or two + coverage for KWP and Bertrand = areas where we very obviously are pretty vulnerable.

I agree with KriSaint. I can’t see why we would go for the player in an area where we already have plenty even if you assume Minamino and Theo do not make their loans permanent. The only reason to add another attacking wide player is if they are better than what we already have. I don’t think I can say that with Danjuma.
