Leicester City Players Suspended Due To Covid 19 Breach
Sunday, 11th Apr 2021 16:05

When Leicester City's team was announced for their game at West ham United their were eyebrows raised at the omission of several key players, now it is emerging that their absence was due to a breach of Covid 19 regulations, not ideal preparations ahead of their FA Cup semi final against Saints.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rogers was left fuming after finding out that four of their squad had attended a house party against the current Covid 19 regulations.

James Maddison, Hamza Choudhury and Ayoze Perez were pulled up in front of Brendan Rodgers for an alleged breach of Premier League guidelines on squad bubbles as well as injured Harvey Barnes and were called in at on Tuesday following the alleged breach.

Maddison, Choudhury and Perez were missing from the Leicester squad for the defeat at West Ham although pre game Brendan Rodgers was insisting that the three non injured players missing would be available for the FA Cup semi final against Saints.

A Leicester City spokesman said: "The club has made its expectations around adherence to Covid-19 protocols abundantly clear to all its personnel.

"It is extremely disappointing, therefore, to learn of a breach that had the potential to undermine the efforts of club staff to protect the environments in which our teams train and play. Appropriate measures have been taken to prevent our team bubbles being compromised.

"We wholly expect our people to behave in a way that reflects the national effort and the sacrifices made by our communities to control the spread of the virus."

"Those involved have apologised for their poor judgement. Our response to the matter will be concluded internally."

What form that punishment will take and whether they wil be required to self isolate and at best be unable to train ahead of the Wembley game or whether they will be suspended is yet unclear, other incidents of player s attending house parties contary of the law of the land have been given bans.

Whatever happens this is not ideal for the team preparation ahead of the semi final against Saints .

Time for the FA to investigate further and take the appropriate actions against those players who have breached the FA conduct rules. Fine them all and issue 3 of 4 match bans to all - including Barnes (if he was there) from when he is fit to play again !!

Failure for them to take any further action will not only show them up as spineless, but basically tell every other player that they can get away with breaking the rules simply by apologising !!

In his post match interview Brendan Rogers said that all the players will be available for the semi final and he expects them to make up for their infringement. May be I am being ultra cynical, but I was not convinced by his tone etc that there has been much, if any infringement and that it seemed convenient.

Maddison will play, I am pretty certain of that.

Well hopefully the FA will make the correct decisions and make sure they’re suspended specifically for 4 games so that they won’t be coming to St Mary’s! 😂 But in all seriousness I do at the very least hope that they can’t play on Sunday as at the end of the day we need to win something for once if we want to keep the likes of Ings and Vestergaard along with making Europe, and if that includes getting a bit of luck from the oppositions suspensions the internet certainly not going to complain!

Don't think he would make a Covid thing up just to 'rest' players, he would simply not pick them. I wish Vardy had scored today - you know what we are like for ending opposition bad runs...

It will be harsh for Rodgers to leave out players who have followed the protocols for the semi, if it means their starting spot is taken by one of the party goers. Can't be good for the team morale. I would imagine Maddison and co will start on the bench if the club has a strong ethos. Either way, we will still face a very tough side.

Looking at it this morning it seems as if Rodgers has suspended them in an attempt to show the FA he has taken action in the hope that they will then consider justice has been done and wont follow it up

Perhaps these players might wake up to reality if one or other of them manages to infect team mates with the virus this week? That probably won't happen with the testing regime in place but dropping them for one match doesn't send out any sort of message to those who see them as role models.

I suppose it's good that Rodgers has made an issue of it, and escaped punishment from the FA (either you follow the protocols, or you ignore them) but it's too much to expect that he would "suspend" them for a longer period and ban them from a Semi Final.
Either way, it will still be 11 v.11 on the day.

If there is any "infection" within their squad it will certainly show itself before Sunday.
