Southampton To Sign Chelsea Central Defender
Wednesday, 21st Jul 2021 20:31

According to his agent Saints are about to sign Dynel Simeu from Chelsea on a free transfer after the 19 year old became the latest Chelsea academy player to want out of Stamford Bridge due to his first team opportunities being blocked by the big name signings.

Dynel Simeu has turned down a new contract at Chelsea and is now set to join Saints as a free agent, there is of course a development fee payable but the two clubs have agreed on £1.5 million plus add ons for appearances etc as well as a sell on clause according to the sources on the internet.

So who is Dynel Simeu ?

He is a 19 year old right sided central defender who although born in Cameroon was apparently based in Southampton as youngster before being spotted by Chelsea at the age of 13.

By season 19/20 he was a mainstay of the U18 squad and also in the development/academy squad, last season he was made captain of that squad who ended 20/21 in 2nd place behind Manchester City in the division where Saints ended up bottom.

He has yet to make a first team appearance at Chelsea, but he like many other players in the system have become disillusioned with a lack of opportunity at Stamford Bridge and although offered a new contract he turned it down to seek a club where he had a chance of a first team place.

Able to play on both sides of the centre of defence he is seen as a strong leader even at only 19.

For Saints it is a good opportunity, whilst Simeu might not be quite ready to slot into the Saints defence, he is undoubtedly near to the point where he is up to making his debut and perhaps making himself first choice in Ralph hasenhuttl's plans.

For the money it is a punt worth taking as Saints look to make sure they have adequate cover in the centre of defence and Ralph may feel he can let Jannik Vestergaard depart with Salisu and Jan Bednarek forming the choice pairing in the centre of defence backed up by Jack Stephens and the incoming Dynel Simeu.

Well if we can get him, a new central striker like Origi, and maybe another full back and centre mid, then at least we’ll of had a decent transfer market for once! Let’s just hope that if the likes of Ings does go that we can get in a decent replacement

Coming from Southampton is obviously a strong part of his identity because even on the official Chelsea web site, in his profile, it's the first thing they say about him:

"A Southampton boy, he is a strong, imposing central defender who made five appearances for the youth team while still a schoolboy. He has also represented England up to the Under-17 age group and signed his first professional contract at the club in March 2019."

Let's hope he has a long and successful career here at his hometown club.

With Dymel Semeu possibly joining as a CB and Oludare Olufunwa, a right back, promoted to training with the first team, a strong back line is beginning to form. If JanV stays we will have 3 PL CBs with him, JanB (who hopefully gets his mojo back) and Salisu, a LB with young backup and KWP for whom we need backup (Yan Valery to Nice?) Will Smallbone will, hopefully, be back during the season. Not bad going into a 21/22.
JWP, Romeo (!) and Little Mo are a good 2 from 3 for DMs
Left side AMF is iffy! We have Redmond (Oh goody) Djenepo (Oh dear) Ethan Ross (??) who it seems just turned up after quitting Aberdeen (15 games and 5 goal contributions on loan at Raith Rovers) Right side we have Stuey and the Boy Wonder (at one time!)
Ings (probably) and Che up front and Armstrong (??? - how needy are Blackburn? Not as desperate as they were having had their accounts cleared and no FFP penalty)
Still work to do but not as bad as the doom boys would have you believe.

I understand paying a development fee ...but add ons for appearances and a sell on clause for a free agent youngster?

This looks like great business, more like this would be great.

I don’t see how you can have a sell-on clause on sn out of contract player…

Can't wait to see Dymel Simeu and Ethan Ross in red and white, the future looks bright. Fingers crossed that the signings are announced soon.

Could be a great signing. Think Mark Wright.

If Lemina goes this week, Long moves on, Vestergaard says farewell soon, Obefemi is swapped that will make 10 who have taken a taxi….so who will come in? A big difference to our wage bill. Now, where is a new owner going to come from?

My general observation is that we seem to be operating a one in one out policy atm. The only growth in squad may be the returning loanees. I guess this is where a lot of clubs our size will be this year tho.

On paper he looks good. His local roots could be a real boost to having that tougher mentality in defence.

Steadily working our way through the transfer window. Will these players work out - only time will tell!

This could be the best business of the transfer window! He fits Saints transfer policy - Young with potential (and possible profit on re-sale). Not sure he will get masses of game time here to start with - hoping against injuries. Still a bit of pruning of squad to do Lemina to Newcastle would be good business (as would Elyounousis to anywhere). I would like to see another striker come in - ideally one who actually can score goals (apart from Ingsy none of current squad look like they' will be prolific)!
