Saints Take On Fulham In First Pre Season Friendly Today
Saturday, 24th Jul 2021 09:00

Southampton will take on Fulham in a behind closed doors game that is so hush hush no one is saying whether it will be Staplewood or the London club's training ground it will be held at, one thing is for sure it is not about the result.

Saints should have been in Ralph Hasenhuttl's home land of Austria this week taking in a bit of mountain training and yodelling, but with the World pandemic putting paid to that they will head to Surrey to take on Fulham, although even the venue of this game has been kept under wraps.

This is not unusual, most clubs play some closed doors friendly both pre season and during it, they like to keep things hush hush so they can try out things they might not want to be public, be that tactical or even the odd triallist or two.

From a Saints perspective they will probably send a mixed squad, although some of the players who featured in the Euros are back in training , they are likely to be rested in the early part of pre season, having only arrives back in the last week.

One definitely out is Jannik Vestergaard whose Denmark team were knocked out by England in the semis, is not yet back to the club so will be missing.

Also missing will be Mario Lemina who is said to be in France completing a move to Nice.

The result in this game is immaterial, it is all about getting the players a feel of the ball and get rid of the cobwebs.

On the contrary, the result IS material if we lose, which we have seemed to do with monotonous regularity in recent pre-season friendlies...

Win, lose or just getting players fit, I haven't read ANYTHING to suggest that Saints supporters have much to look forward to once again! Ralph has explained the problem of taking in new players but the second half of last season was proof that some quality players are needed urgently.
