Southampton Looking At Nottingham Forest Central Defender
Monday, 16th Aug 2021 17:09

Saints would say they have robbed the rich in selling Jannik Vestergaard to Forest's East Midland rivals Leicester City, now they are set to pay the poor of Nottingham with a bid for a member of Chris Hughton's merry men.

Latest media sources in the Midland's suggest that Saints are weighing up a move for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall.

The 24 year old has racked up 129 appearances for Forest in the Championship and has also played for Dagenham & Redbridge on loan and also Rangers in the Scottish Premiership with whom he played 22 games in 2018/19 season as well as other games in the Europa League.

At 6ft 4 inches Worrall is commanding in the air and has been credited with has also been credited with interest from a clutch of Premier League rivals including Brentford, Burnley, Norwich City and Crystal Palace.

Now he is linked with Saints although the problem is he has missed the start of this season with a calf injury that will keep him out for a week or two yet, meaning that if we did get him he would be unlikely to be in contention until the West Ham game on September 11th.

Although not quite the profile that we need in that we are badly lacking a central defender with Premier League experience and leadership qualities that doesn't mean that we can't also go for Worrall who could be a good acquisition for around £7.5 -10 million depending on which story you believe.

Some would see this as a lack of ambition by the club but in recent years the Championship has produced several quality central defenders not least the likes of Ben White & Adam Webster as well as Tyrone Mings.

An experienced and very good championship player.
Makes sense to build for the future.

Worrall is just another Jack Stephens. On loan at Dagenham? Plays in a poor Forest team? How far Saints have fallen. We once had Van Dijk playing for us.

Nothing in the rumour mill that I can find about Dael Fry at Middlesbrough these days, wasn't he supposed to be the next great defender not too long ago? I'd never heard of Joe Worrall before his name cropped up this week, although I do remember a referee of that name back in the 1980's. Haven't a clue if this lad's what we need but I'm sure at least one player will be signed, bought or loaned, in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime RH please give the current players a chance by dropping McCarthy.

We need a young centre back to replace JV and provide an alternative to Stephens, Bednarek and Salisu. But we also need an experienced DCM to bring on in games like Everton as a leader and to provide some backbone/ organisation when we are trying to close out a game/ avoid a big defeat. I think trying to combine the two isn't ideal.

Oh well, according to a media post yesterday both Saints and Wolves are still interested in Dael Fry, so maybe he still is of interest?
