Southampton Injury Update Ahead Of Leicester City Game
Tuesday, 30th Nov 2021 09:25

Saints will take on Leicester City at St Mary's on Wednesday looking to get back to winning ways after two straight defeats, but who will Ralph Hasenhuttl have back in his squad for a fixture that has not seen a win for the home side in the last four attempts.

Ralph Hasenhuttl likes to make the opposition think in his press conferences, so when he gives an injury update you are never quite sure how accurate his comments are, last week he reported a full squad for the trip to Anfield yet both Moi Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong missed the game, the former due to his wife about to give birth and the latter with the calf injury that has now kept him out of action for the best part of 4 months, add to that Ibrahima Diallo who had a knock on the ankle which left him on the bench and it was a different picture than the one given ahead of the game.

So when Ralph reports that for the visit of Leicester City he has a full squad I will take it with a pinch of salt.

Asked for his team news ahead of Wednesday’s home clash with Leicester City, the Austrian boss said:

“At the moment, as of today(Monday) I had 21 players on the pitch working with us.

“It was only Stuey who was not part of the squad. Jack Stephens is back and all the other players.

“Thierry Small played with the under-23s, so he was not with us but the rest were with us.”

Armstrong has been a big miss for Saints this season and has never quite been replaced in his wide midfield spot and a lack of goals so far this season is evidence of that, with Adam Armstrong on the small side for a forward, he would have benefitted from his namesakes surging runs and cutting inside and slotting the ball through rather than heading down the wing to cross a ball.

When Stuart returns to full fitness I would expect Adam to be a big beneficiary.

In the meantime we almost have a full squad for Wednesday night and it is important that the manager gets the team selection right, something he had admitted he did not do at Liverpool, in a fixture that has not been kind to Saints over the past four seasons.

Would love to see your team, Nick.

Who would you choose and what formation? Maybe you can give us this in your preview.

Yes Nick lets hope he gets it right this time. Defeats at the hands of Leicester and Brighton and he wont have many more team selections to get wrong!

I like your humour Nick "....Ralph likes to make the opposition think". I would suggest that extends to his own team and supporters!

Agree Stuey A has been missed and that this has reduced the number and quality of the chances for Adam A.. Must admit I still like the look of him and if my memory serves me correctly, Kevin Phillips scored on debut then didn't get another goal for almost half a season before he exploded. I fear that Ralph will now be very cautious and defensive over the next couple of games and go too far the other way from the Anfield experiment. The key for me is to keep going and keep attacking until the end. If the Villa away game last year didn't prove the need for this then I'm not sure what will..
Tella must be given a start soon in a game we can actually win..

As always good post Colburn - you remember we beat Villa 6-1 not so long ago!! Goodness knows what Ralph has in his head for Leicester but it ain't going to be easy but if KWP isn't playing it will be the first nail in Ralph's coffin.
On another note - thanks for your articles Nick - of course we dont agree on much (Ralph's contribution in particular) but you provide us with all the information we need and without the appalling sensationalism of Hampshire Live and several other social media failures! Keep up the good work and its obvious to all that you love this Club and only want to see the best!

In the same way I stopped getting annoyed with Christian Ronaldo and learnt to appreciate his incredible ability I've stopped expecting anything from saints over the last 5 years or so as it wound me up so much. To some extent I've even started to enjoy the next selection choices of our Ralph. You just don't know what you're going to get from one game to the next. I'll be happy with one point from the next 2 as Leicester is a so called free hit.

Good call by Joe above - cheers for giving us this forum and shouldering our woes.

Together as one

I'm just hoping that Brendan goes full Klopp and plays Bertrand and Vestergaard against us.
