Saints Sign Keeper On One Month Contract
Tuesday, 7th Dec 2021 10:36

Southampton have signed free agent Willy Caballero on a one month deal to cover for injuries to both Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy, will it be an inspired signing or a failure, we will soon find out.

Ralph Hasenhuttl doesn’t.seem to be happy with any of his keepers at the moment, Alex McCarthy has endured.a torrid few games and felt his managers wrath on Saturday with Ralph accusing him of being unprofessional, in truth it is hard to see that he has a future at the club after that outburst.

With Fraser Forster picking up an injury in training Saints have acted fast and signed former Chelsea and Manchester City keeper Willy Caballero.

The only problem with this is that the Argentinian has barely played a game in 7 years since joining City, he barely got into City.s side playing only 23 Premier League games in 3 years and then only 11 in 4 at Stamford Bridge.

That is not going to set the pulses racing but at the moment devils can’t be choosers.

I hope that Harry Lewis is deemed good enough to play and Caballero is being paid to sit on the bench. Or is Lewis injured as well?

Well he can’t surely be any worse.

I also hope to see Harry Lewis have a chance, if he's not going to play in these circumstances, then he never will.. I would imagine Caballero would need to get a good week of training first to get to know our defence but at least he is experienced!

This is a no-brainer. A very experienced goalie who knows the Premier League. I have seen Prem. several games that he played in and he is no slouch , and several reports state he's been training locally with Wimbledon to keep his fitness levels.

Caballero played well at Man City and Chelsea - when required without ever becoming their first choice. The fact that he is 40 matters little as a goalie doesn't have to cover the ground in the same way as defenders / midfielders, and on the face of it, must be a better bet than Harry Lewis, especially as we will be without Romeu and Salisu on Saturday at Arsenal.

We don't know the extent of the injuries to McCarthy and Forster, and we may need to keep Willy a bit longer - if they don't recover sooner, or maybe ..we will sign one of the replacement goalies in January that have been vaunted in the media recently.

YES Harry Lewis needs game time if he is to stay longer term, but the upcoming FA Cup game at Swansea is tailor-made for him - if Forster does 'nt recover fitness in time.

Bottom line, if Harry Lewis isn't good enough to paly when required why is he here!
Caballero might just turn out to be a good signing but that doesn't change the above statement.

We need to have a keeper on the bench, or as back-up, so it makes sense to sign Willy on a free for a month.

Do we know whether it will be Lewis or Willy that starts ? Before everyone jumps to conclusions, lets wait until Saturday to see shall we ?
