Southampton Loan Out Defender To Further His Progress
Wednesday, 26th Jan 2022 09:02

Saints have loaned out summer signing from Chelsea Dynel Simeu to Carlisle United, but this is all about toughening up the 19 year old in League Two as the central defender is highly rated at St Mary's.

Dynel Simeu arrived from Chelsea in the summer due to the first team chances being limited at Stamford Bridge, however he has found his path blocked to the Saints first team due to the fine form of late of Mohammed Salisu, Jan Bednarek and fellow summer signing Lyanco, not to mention Jack Stephens who at the moment is in 4th spot in the pecking order.

Symeu who is still only 19 was rated by many as better than Tino Livramento, but his problem as a central defender is that it is much more of a gamble to throw a teenager in the centre of defence in the Premier League, than it is to play a full back or indeed any other position.

After being on the bench for the first team on a number of occasions over the Xmas period Saints were hoping to blood him at Swansea City, but the sending off of Yan Valery after half an hour put paid to that.

It looked likely that he would play against Coventry City in the next round of the cup, but Saints have taken a different direction for a player who has been a star of the B team.

They have sent him out on loan at Carlisle United in League Two, this will give him his first taste of competitive first team football either at Saints or at Chelsea, it should toughen him up, but it should also be a good starting level to build confidence and show his talents.

So this move makes sense in his footballing development , it is most definitely a progressive move for the player, rather than a backwards step for a player who is not considered to be one for the future by the club, as has been the case on a number of our recent loans out.

Its great to see some of our promising youngsters get proper game time. As I've said in the past we have been happy to sign players from the lower divisions of European leagues but not to give our kids a chance in our lower leagues. lets see how they perform and if it is not to the standard we require at least they are in the shop window.
I personally believe we have some youngsters that could save us a decent amount of money & eventually make us a fair bit of money. We just need to give them a chance.
Got to feel sorry for Caleb Watts who got a chance to shine but picked up a nasty injury.
Lets see how it all works out.

History does not bode well for Dynel. Of all the loaners out from our Academy since 2014 I’m pretty sure that only Stephens and Targett returned to play any amount of first team football for Saints.

It’s not just game time these young players need at 19. They also require skill coaching and their physique and mental strength developing. For the manager of Carlisle , facing a relegation battle and only 8 PTs off dismissal from the League and with no win in three , he is unlikely to prioritise Dynels needs over that of the team and his managerial career.

Bringing good but not players oozing with natural ability Eg Shaw, Bale , Walcott through that gap between Academy graduation and establishing yourself in the first XI squad is very difficult and Saints have yet to find a solution.

Dynel looks the part, but there is a world of difference between Academy / B teams and the real "Man's World " of football down in the lower reaches of the Football League.
Even though he has the physique, he will learn a lot coming up against seasoned professionals who know the game .
I recall that Jack Stephens was farmed out to Swindon for a couple of seasons in his youth and came back a totally different player having learned his trade " the hard way."

Wait to hear of matchday reports to see how he's fairing at Carlisle.
