Will Two Goalkeepers Arrive At St Mary's This Week
Monday, 6th Jun 2022 10:23

According to some reports Saints have one goalkeeper undergoing a medical this weekend and another about to sign, so could there be a shake up in the goalkeeping department with three leaving and two coming in the near future.

Fraser Forster, Harry Lewis & Willy Cabbalero appear to be leaving the club, Lewis will be joining Bradford City, Forster looks set to join Tottenham Hotspur although that deal is unlikely to be completed until July 1st when Forster's deal at St Mary's ends, at Spurs he will be on considerably less wages so to leave now would cost him the best part of £200,000 in lost salary plus a loyalty bonus.

This will leave only Alex McCarthy, his position is unclear, although his agent appeared on a list of payments made by Saints to agents, showing him having been paid for negotiating a new deal, there has been no announcement formally made by Saints.

Certainly McCarthy fell out of favour with Ralph Hasenhuttl after signing the deal and he was publicly criticised by the Austrian for a lack of professionalism in what would be his last game for 5 months due to injury.

So it seems that McCarthy is not seen as the solution to all our problems between the sticks by the manager and that we will be making changes, what this will mean for McCarthy is unclear with the rumour mill saying that two goalkeepers will be arriving imminently.

The first of them could be here by today if reports he had a medical at St Mary's over the weekend are true, Mateusz Lis is now a free agent after joining Turkish club Altay from Wisla Krakow last summer on a one year deal, but has now left left after just one season following their relegation from the Super Lig,

But the 25 year old's first season at St Mary's is also unclear, rumours allege that he will be loaned out for next season, but that could change if Saints could move on McCarthy.

That doesn't look likely for the coming season as Saints will be keen to have at least one experienced keeper in the squad and now we come to the second potential signing.

Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski is not a new name in the Saints rumour mill and with only a year left on his contract with the Italian club they will find it hard to keep him and seem resigned to cashing in now with £10 million being claimed as being the fee that would be accepted.

Dragowski at 24 is a year younger that his fellow Pole Lis, but is more experienced having played several seasons as Fiorentina's number one, a higher standard than both the Polish & Turkish leagues that Lis has played in but he would be an unknown quantity in the Premier League and so Ralph Hasenhuttl might be wary of getting rid of McCarthy and relying on Dragowski & Lis as his two goalkeeping options.

So if this is the path that Saints are taking then it seems likely that they will want to get Lis out on loan with a European club at a decent level, Dragowski would potentially be the number one keeper at St Mary's next season with Alex McCarthy as the back up.

So the transfer rumour mill will start to hot up in the next couple of weeks, although the real business will not start until July 1st when contracts end, as mentioned with Forster, most players wait until that date so they can receive their loyalty bonus.

But for players like Dragowski who will be earning more at their new club, they might be happy to move before July.

So, maybe the brief excitement that Nick Pope was on his way to St Mary's was just wishful thinking. Let's hope not.

so...Dragowski will be competition for McCarthy, and Lis will go on loan (somewhere ) to get regular game time (which is something every reserve keeper (needs / wants) but unless we have someone else lined up as well. .I could still see us giving Willie another season - just in case one of them gets Covid, or breaks a limb...or ...

Now ..what about the guys in defence ...in front of him...?

I think what will be frustrating is to see Nick Pope going to Notts Forest as is highly rumoured now for £12m.

Pope is a very good keeper, but his weakness is his distribution, his kicking is fine for a team that likes to pump it forward but we dont play like that, hence i think we will look elsewhere

Nick please leave it at "Pope is a very good keeper" then ponder when we last had a very good keeper.

We need more than competition for McCarthy.. we need a new number 1
