Southampton Now Linked With Burnley Midfielder
Tuesday, 28th Jun 2022 21:23

Saints are being linked with a move for a member of Burnley's squad recently relegated from the Premier League, but they are in good company, no less than six other clubs are also said to be lining up outside of Turf Moor.

Saints are joined by Everton, Leeds, West Ham, Wolves, Leicester and Brentford in chasing Burnley's Josh Brownhill, the 26 year old played in 35 of the Lancashire Club's 38 Premier League games scoring twice and also having 3 assists, 32 of those games were starts.

Primarily a central midfielder, Brownhill joined Burnley in January 2020 for £9 million from Bristol City, with 2 years left on his contract it seems that someone is touting him around with a fee being suggested of £15 million, although that sounds a little on the high side.

This suggests that Burnley are trying to start a bidding war and push up the price with six clubs linked.

In many respects Brownhill would be a reasonable target for Saints, at 26 he has a mix of experience both in the Premier League and the Championship, along with being young enough to still have a hunger in his and a possible sell on fee.

However with the number of clubs linked and the stature of at least 4 of them being higher than Saints, I suspect that our name is being added to this list to give the impression that Brownhill is in demand, indeed I would suspect that is the case for all six said to be interested, whether a bid is forthcoming is yet to be seen, what I would say though is that surely Crystal Palace are interested, they are usually lined with the same player that Saints are, perhaps the person starting the rumour forgot to add their name.
