Could Southampton Be About To Break Their Transfer Record To Land Belgium Hot Shot
Wednesday, 6th Jul 2022 11:40

Saints have so far invested £21 million in the transfer market, but that amount could be set to be more than doubled this week with rumoured signings, but one could be very special as it could smash the club's record transfer fee.

According to reports on the continent Southampton have joined Inter Milan & Leeds United in the pursuit of Club Brugge's attacking midfielder Charles De Ketelaere.

The 21 year old primarily plays just behind the central striker although he has also been deployed as an out and out centre forward and out wide for the Belgium club.

Inter Milan have been in the running, but have had bids of £20 million or so turned down and this is believed to be their maximum according to reports in Italy

Leeds United are said to have upped the ante and it is claimed they have offered around 30 million euros which in English money is around £26 million, Leicester City are also said to be interested.

But Saints are the latest name to come into the frame for the players who played in 33 of Club Brugge's 34 Jupilo League games last term, scoring 14 goals and also having 7 assists.

He was deployed mainly as a centre forward in this campaign, although also dropped deeper or wider when required,

His versatility would suit Saints, but to get him they would need to smash their current transfer record, if they were to do so it would be a massive statement of intent from the new owners.

Wonderful to at last be associated with attacking midfielders.

Why bother wasting our money when we already have Redmond, Djenepo, Tella, the Armstrongs and Walcott to do the biz ? :-)

It would appear from the negative reaction to your post TimSaint that irony isn't always understood.

Breaking the record fee isn't always a good sign, and in today's market even £20 - odd million isn't likely to get many headlines compared to some other Prem. clubs.
Over many past decades Saints have made some great record signings. My generation might say that Ron Davies (1966-72) was one of the best of all time, but some of the others along the way cost the club far too much and brought only heartache and the list is too long, and depressing to contemplate - especially in the last 10 years.

If my maths are correct (?) the present record fee lies somewhere between Vestergaard and Carillo. (ouch). Let's hope that the next record buy - whoever it is - will be worth it.
