The future of Ruben Selles is yet to be decided, but it seems that the media have made their decision and that is Saints will be looking to appoint a new manager sooner than later and they have put two big names forward.

The two names that the media think will make a good fit for the St Mary's job are Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter.

They are of course the obvious names to link, both made their names in bringing through raw talent and both have Premier League experience.

Brendan Rodgers is the surprise name in the hat though given that for the last decade he has spent it managing both Liverpool and Celtic, as well as Leicester City with whom he won the FA Cup and Community Shield while also managing them in UEFA Europa League.

From a distance you would think that he would be casting his net a bit higher when selecting his next club, would he really want a season in the Championship or would he prefer a club in the Premier League.

Ex Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys feels that he is the man for the job.

“I think [Brendan] Rodgers has got to be looking at Southampton now, which is a fantastic job for somebody," he told Casinos En Ligne.

"Wonderful part of the world. Great club, good structure. So I think Brendan [Rodgers] or Graham Potter, perhaps, should be thinking of Southampton or Leicester for Graham. They’ll both come again, but not at a big club. But it didn't surprise me at all that Brendan and Leicester decided to part company."

I am not so sure that Keys is right, certainly in the case of Rodgers he has the CV to land a decent Premier league job and if West ham stay up and start badly next season then David Moyes could well be leaving the Hammers for a second time.

Potter perhaps does not have the pedigree that Rodgers has, but I think there will still be a few clubs who would offer him a job and Key's is right when he says Leicester might well be one of them.

Leeds surviving could also mean an opportunity for both of them.

As it stands at the moment Keys is right, Saints will be seen in the game as a club who can bounce right back to the Premier League, although some Saints fans claim the club is rotten from top to bottom, I think they are a little off the mark and that we have the foundations of a good squad in place who will stay at the club next season with the addition of a decent transfer budget from the sale of some key players.

The speculation has started as to who will manage Saints next season, the actual rebuild won't be far behind.

Flamingbankers added 09:19 - May 3 The club does need a total rebuild from top to bottom. SR haven't shown any sign of sound management and the squad has increasing been degraded over 7 years. We need a common sense model based on 'making , supplying and keeping ' a good team not on the inevitably failing model of bringing on players to sell them off. If you give someone like Djenepo an extended contract of 3 years at £60,000 a week you really are playing with desperate stakes (and Walcott at £75,000 a week).

DellBoyWally added 10:30 - May 3 Nuthin Jones is free!! Read the Anti Niemi interview; he rates him very highly having worked with him at Brighton. OK, not a starter. But Niemi is a very experienced GK coach and highly rated. We could do a lot worse (and probably have!) than bring him in as a first step (interesting comments about his embarrassment and shame at getting relegated - will many of the current squad feel such emotion?) Not a big fan of Brendan Rogers but he could do a proper job, get us back and give us a couple of years in the PL. But as pointed out, a PL club would take him - WHU a likely destination.) As for Potter, he had success at one club and flopped at another. Not a particularly impressive CV. Doesn't fill me with enthusiasm. David Moyes when WHU get rid? Stacks of experience, top level and European success. But again one that PL clubs would entice. How about Fonte as defensive coach? Beattie as striker coach? There's 3 in place, just need a manager to oversee our return for the 24/25 season back where we should be!!

underweststand added 10:35 - May 3 Don't we go through this process every time we change manager?...and they find the next guy by putting the names in a hat ..blindfolding the cleaner and get them to choose one. Listen up fellas - that doesn't work... or you will bring in someone who's good in another foreign league but only ever been to UK on holiday and has watched Prem. games on TV. As for the two you mentioned (Nick), firstly Brendon Rodgers -nice enough fella in interviews, but he hasn't made any great progress with Leicester-hence his sacking. PLUS I totally lost faith in him as Liverpool manager when - after buying Lambert and Lallana (argueably one of our best partnership in the last 20 years) but never played them at the same time . If he had watched enough Saints games, he would have noticed that their goals and assists - to each other - must have created a record. Saints successes at the time were in part based on their partnership. ..RANT OVER. As for Graham Potter - a one time reserve full back with Saints in our Dell days. Apparently he did well in Sweden and took a 4th tier side upto their Prem. and into CL. Giving Swansea a lift, and later Brighton is some sort of recommendation i suppose , but his move to Chelsea was a league too much (Champions League in this case), and he became another casualty of their new American ownership, who have their own version of ..Manager of the Month. Three losses ...and you're out. I suppose he should be good enough to manage us in the Championship, and if he still has a house in Sussex, he wouldn't have to put his family through yet another house move. Either way ...I'm not over - excited by either of the candidates mentioned above.

highfield49 added 11:12 - May 3 A lot of supporters would have welcomed Potter's appointment at any time over the last two years and I don't see his spell at Chelsea as anything more than an additional learning curve. Personally I'd be delighted by the club's announcement of Potter on a three year contract starting tomorrow.

redwight added 11:47 - May 3 Potter is the obvious choice, especially as Lampard's record since succeeding him at Chelsea seems to suggest the problems there go much deeper than who is in charge. If not him, take up Bowlercow's suggestion and google Will Still. No, I'd never heard of him either.

Colburn added 12:57 - May 3 Not sure we want to pay £22k per game to have Will Still as manager. This is the fine each week because he hasn't completed his coaching badges, obviously a ridiculous scenario and shows the authorities up for what they really are, money grabbing control freaks. When you look at the troubles Lampard has at Chelsea, you realise that Potter was actually doing ok there considering the clown show that is their oversized squad. I still believe he is the perfect fit if he would be prepared to build from the championship. Leicester and Everton have big problems with finance so they are not actually as attractive as us atm for the likes of him. Rodgers would be OK and might take the drop, he has the experience and has won silverware. My only bugbear is why don't the club sort it now, there's no way at this stage any new manager would take blame for our relegation and I can't believe in the future, a chairman would look at Potters CV and say we'll, you did get relegated once.. I would hope there is more nous in the football world than that, this isn't a normal job.. One thing is for sure, if we'd have had a proper manager with experience at the start of the season, instead of Jones or instead of Selles, we would have more points and a chance of survival. I can't see many points gained by any of the bottom 5 now so we really have missed a trick or 3..

dowater added 14:18 - May 3 i would love WIll Still to be our manager and had seen a clip on him on the BBC website a month or so back. my major concern with him, is that he will come in and do a great job, promote us back to prem and have a great first season and then Tottenham or someone will come in and poach him, as he is looking better than our standards. Brendan would be my first choice, he's been at the big clubs and failed and the bigger clubs seem to be overlooking him at the mo, so we know that he would be here for the long haul and create stability within the club, building his team. Graham potter, would be a bit of a risk in my opinion. as can be seen now, brighton are in a great place and doing well. i wonder how much of that success was down to the running of the club and transfers, was GP involved and sanctioned them or was he, just their to coach and pick the team? either way, could do the job but with the issues in our club we need someone with proven experience and that would be Brendan. for a bit of a curve ball i would look at someone like Christophe Galtier. i know still employed at PSG, but not for much longer if the rumer mill is to be believed and has a good history of doing well with small clubs and making them punch above their weights.

If Potter were given the job now it might also encourage some of the current squad to delay their imminent departures. It would also make us the only club to have had four managers in one Premier Leagues season - could soon to become a favourite sports question in Trivial Pursuit and keep us in everyone's fond memory for a season or two? Selles maybe a 'nice' man and popular with a few members of the Squad - presumably the ones he keeps choosing - but his lack of experience and failure to put at least some trust in our New Year signings - has also left many players wanting out. I'm just wondering if the appointment of Potter now might just prevent the mass exodus of young talent that seems inevitable after what many consider one of the worst seasons in our Club's history.

Of the names mentioned Potter stands out but as for Rodgers surely a Prem team will appeal more - and there will be one or two looking come the summer. Steve Cooper will probably be available if Forest go? I agree with those saying why not do it now - it won't save us but a huge survival bonus might attract some talent!!

SaintPaulVW added 08:45 - May 4 It will be the old conundrum, do you get someone in for the 'long term' but then they get under severe pressure if they don't achieve results in the short term. If we get a 'name' manager in they are going to have to be happy with the SR style. Suspect this would only work if lessons have truly been learnt.
