Southampton V Millwall The Verdict
Friday, 2nd Jan 2026 17:51

Tonda Eckert rang the changes for this game, but it made little difference as the key 3 man central defence remained unchanged, in the end a draw was a fair result, but of not much help for Saints.

Those that had suggested that Tonda Eckert did not have a plan B perhaps saw this theory thrown out of the window, as he made 5 changes from the starting line up at Birmingham, however it made little difference as he kept the same back 3 and although they kept a clean sheet, we struggled to move the ball out quickly from the back and get our attacking players running at the Millwall defence.

There was little of note to write home about in the entire 90 minutes, although both sides had a really good chance to win it.

Millwall's came half way through the second half when Taylor Harwood-Bellis struggled to control the ball wide on the right and was caught in possession, Millwall broke quickly and the ball was crossed into our box perfectly, behind the defence and just out of where you would expect the keeper to come and collect. The visiting player met it perfectly, but Gavin Bazunu pulled of a World Class stop to keep the scores level.

The Saints chance came in the dying seconds of injury time when Taylor Harwood-Bellis had a free header and put it wide when it looked easier to score.

So what can I write about this game that I haven't written before, for me our purple patch was driven by our ability for our defence to get the ball moving forward quickly, that worked well when sides hadn't yet worked us out, but now they have sussed us and press us hard and quickly our back 3 struggle to get it out of defence quickly.

They end up passing along the back line with the opposition happy to press and let them do this, they are too pedestrian, it is not the formation that is the problem but the players used in it, they are all too similar with no contrast and to be blunt no pace, passing ability or organising skills, we need to make changes.

So the question is whether Saints are going to make my job easy as they have done in recent weeks as I can just virtually cut and paste any report I have written in the last 4 or 5 games, or is Tonda Eckert truly going to deal with the problem.

I am truly concerned and with Ronnie Edwards looking likely to leave in January, we will lse the one player whose skills are lacking in that back 3.

The one highlight of the game was Gavin Bazunu, he didn't have much to do but he did it well and again he earned us a point with a superb save .

Most Saints fans I have spoken to felt he was the man of the match and since his return to the side he has played his part in our good run, there will be those that will disagree and claim he is the worst goalkeeper in the Championship, but the stats don't back that up and he is improving every week.

If we are to challenge for promotion then we have to take some drastic action, firstly Tonda Eckert needs help, he needs experienced coaches around him and not those whose only experience is at academy level.

Ronald Koeman had no experience in England but appointing Sammy Lee gave him the experience that he was lacking, Eckert needs the same, he has some great attributes but no experience as a manager at this level, he needs someone alongside him who can fill in the gaps he lacks.

Secondly he has to re jig that back three, he needs strength, he needs pace, he needs passing ability, he needs leadership, but most of all he needs passing ability, the key points in why we are failing to win games we really should be, this needs to be addressed fast.

A plan B is not playing different players in the same format, it's about a change of plan, a different system or style of play and formation.
We have become predictable and underwhelming, the mass excitement of the crowd when we eventually moved forward with pace says it all!

With regards to an experienced coaching back up I’ve mentioned this before. He needs help in this department and not rely on the likes of Ben Reeves and Co. with very limited managerial know how who for some reason Tonda continuously confides in for support during the matches.
There must be some more savvy assistants out there with premier or championship experience who could fit the bill

A lot of discussion about how we have dropped off in the last few games, Millwall no less than the others, and there seems to be increasing blame headed in Tonda’s direction - “is he really up to the job?” etc - whilst not forgetting the general longstanding displeasure with Jack, Manning, Gav, you name it.

But if I may suggest a rather more mundane reason, aside from the heretic possibility that the squad - the high wage bill for which a lot of people seem to equate to quality - just may not be good enough. Certainly we cannot forever paper over the cracks that exist in our defence and strikers, or lack of.

But the players all read the press which is arguing that promotion is increasingly no more than a dream. So is it not understandable - but certainly not forgivable - that the incentive to go the extra mile and risk injury etc is no longer there? i know there are many fans who think that such an attitude means such players have no right to wear the shirt. But I am beginning to see a pattern developing, ie not quite giving 100%.

So yes I agree that Tonda needs a street-fighter beside him; but not for any tactical reason, more because, with a couple of notable exceptions, THE PLAYERS NEED A SERIOUS ROCKET UP THEIR BACKSIDES and TE is not the man to deliver it.

We need a strong, tall, powerful centre forward up front, like Mcburnie or the Wrexham striker who were all available in the summer. A striker like this would give us the option to go long if need be, to hold the ball up but we just don't have this option. Our strikers are too small. The opposition have worked out that we can't go long, so all they have to do is press high and stop us passing out. Millwall marked up Fellows, Sciensa, Azaz etc in.our own half, so there was no way we could get out. Every team is now.doing this.

THB and Jack can both pass the ball perfectly well
For defenders.
The problem is the statues in front of them…

I agree, defenders can pass fine it’s the midfield that just don’t move enough and make space to accept a pass. This means the back three end up knocking the ball around between them, absorbing the press and trying to make space for the midfielders. The likes of Jander has the skill to turn and go but FD usually just passes backwards again to compound the problem leading to error and being caught by the other team to score. Watch Leo realise this and come back himself to bring the ball upfield. Fellows too brings the ball up cutting through into the center himself negating our middlemen. A tall front man could help with this to mix up the play and laying on Armstrong or Archer.

In my opinion.

Yesterday was evidence, if further evidence was actually needed, that our Owners and the people they employ ( Sports Republic ) together with the Players, haven’t the slightest desire to get back into The Premiership.

1. The Owners have got what they want. A Player Trading Business with subsidiaries in Hospitality venues at the stadium.

2 Sports Republic’s employees are being paid handsomely, delivering mediocrity without being in The Premiership spotlight.

3. The Players with the possible exception of Leo, wouldn’t last five minutes in the top flight and are increasing happy to fund their lavish life styles drawing salaries that most of us can only dream about whilst jogging along mid table in The Championship. No pressure to be promoted and little chance of relegation given the dross that occupies the lower reaches of the league.

No amount of talk about changing tactics, methods of play or for that matter coaches is now going to change anything. Why should it when everyone within the club is happy ?

It’s doubles all round time chaps for everyone except us suffering fans. How long will it last ? Probably until there is a change of ownership, and I can’t see that happening any time soon.

As for the game yesterday ? Let’s face it, utterly boring from both sides from start to finish excepting a world class save from Bazunu. To coin an old expression “ they could still be playing now and neither team would have scored “.

So, according to Eckert this game was not rubbish! I have been on this planet over 40 years more than you Mr Manager and this was total garbage so please don’t treat us like we cannot identify entertainment to total dross.
I watched both Oxford and Birmingham at home and pay tribute to the wonderful fans who travel (as I did many years ago) and persist in watching our team in extremely trying circumstances at great personal cost.Good on you all.
I decided after watching these game should I endure 11,000 steps after parking my car as I approach nearing 80 and forgo my usual seat? I therefore decided to sit by the comfort of my home to watch the delights of Millwall. How right I was total bored.
There are so many faults in the makeup and setup of this team that previous comments have made so I will be just going over old ground. Needless to say I ain’t happy

Humbly I believe that just looking at the starting line up tells you everything you need to know. A CB who is league 1 at best, a left back who should have been left back, at home. A strike force that couldn't force an unlocked door. And a midfield that is unable to be dominant against a one man midfield. Sorry Tonda, my opinion is change your style or face the fate of Russell Martin. Lose the crowd, the dressing room and finally your job

Bazunu made a decent save. Everyone cheer now.

He's still rubbish. Wouldn't have him in a 6th tier side.

For all his critics, Bazunu has won us points again for the 2nd consecutive game. Do we need to strengthen the GK position, yes, but given the choice, if we only sign one player in this window, I'd opt for a physical No 9 first. In this Div, physical presence is a must & we need a striker in January.

Bazunu made a good save but was rooted to his line all game and gave the defence no help whatsoever. His sticky feet gifted a couple of corners to them.

This was no Plan B. Same tactics and formation, just a change in personnel. Eckert has to change it up.

I would like to add a slight bit of positivity.

It was a very forgettable game. However we weren't hanging on for a point. Overall we were as good as or better than Millwall. Millwall are one of the better teams in the league.

Agree that there are issues that need sorting out but, midway through the season, we aren't in that bad a place

There is little doubt there is not great deal between virtually all the teams in this division. I don’t think we would have got the two points we did against Birmingham and Millwall without the two saves by GB. Equally the Norwich game we should have had two pens and not missed the one we did get get. I believe we would have gone on a won the game. The same at Oxford should have had a pen and if scored I feel we would have gone on a won the game. I just feel there is still plenty of opportunities between now and the end of the season.

This may be controversial, but Steve McClaren is available. Would he be an ideal number two to Tonda Eckert? He’s got many, many years of experience in football.

Please, let's have no more talk of the play offs and the awful possibility of promotion.
We all know this would result in the slaughter of the innocents - a lesson we have surely learnt from last season. With only 2 or 3 players who could maybe hold their own in the Prem, we would require a whole new team. Sunderland seem to have achieved this, but without a change of ownership, that is something we can only dream of.
