Southampton At Middlesbrough The Verdict Monday, 5th Jan 2026 08:54 There is absolutely no way to dress this up other than this was a game that for a long period we controlled and then we collapsed into a disorganised rabble, to throw the game away in 15 second half minutes.
Tonda Eckert once again made changes, in truth most Saints fans would have seen this as just about the best side that he could have put out and for 54 minutes of the game we looked like we might be good for a win, but then it all fell apart spectacularly.
In the first half Saints seemed to be getting back to form, they created several chances, two of which were spurned by Flynn Downes & Tom Fellows when it looked easier to score, the longer the half went on the more we seemed to be growing into the game.

At half time Boro hadn't has a shot on target and we had registered 4, all of them decent chances.
The second half started pretty much like the end of the first, we had a decent shot on target and in the 53rd minute you could see us winning the game.
But a minute later it all changed, Boro caught us well and truly square and opened the scoring, a little bit against the run of play, but we were still in it, but 7 minutes later we were 2-0 down and then quickly 3-0 down, in just 15 minutes we had gone from a side who were well and truly in the game, to one that was a complete and utter shambles.
The only real shock was it took them another 10 minutes to get a fourth.
The problem was the same as I have been saying, the back three isn't working, it has no leadership or organisation, Boro were well drilled, we looked like a team of 15 year olds.
There isn't a Captain in the side, we are keeping on doing the same things and getting the same results.
Tonda Eckert's priority should be to get in an experienced central defender in January, do this and we have a chance, fail to do so and this will be a dismal season, make no mistake about it.

There is not a lot I can say about this game, I still believe that we have quality in this squad, but it lacks leadership, both on and off the pitch, it needs an authorative presence again both on and off the pitch.
When Boro went 1-0 up, there was no one taking charge and steadying the ship and then getting the team going again, we just descended into chaos.
This is a crucial month for Eckert, who truly has to be judged at the end of the season, rather than now, but he has to show that he can see where it is going wrong and can deal with it.
But in football you have bad results and you have bad runs, Boro had just been through one themselves and found their form again against us, so we can turn things round, it doesn't have to be terminal.
But there is a lot of work to be done, in the coming weeks we will find out if Tonda Eckert is the man to do it.
This verdict is short and sweet, but I am sure that many of you will have a lot to say about this performance

I’m not going to talk about Sunday’s game because we all know we were embarrassing…..again! I’m just curious as to know why, of the three photos relating to a game between Boro and Saints, only one is from the actual game? I’ve noticed this in a few of your posts now.

Probably like most supporters i was so depressed by yesterday’s result. And to add insult to injury, Tonda saying that we controlled the game for 55 minutes was just unbelievable. If he really thinks such a comment will placate the fans he really is VERY DELUDED. If you watch the last two goals our defence were standing like statues in the box while the Boro players played around or through them: ie absolutely there was zero determination, drive or commitment to stop them. You say we have no leaders on the pitch. And certainly we badly need a Roy Keane (sic) type character to shout and scream. But if we presume that the likes of THB or FD or even Jack, who after all do have a wealth of experience, have either been told not to be more assertive, or are unsure of themselves (ie don’t want to be blamed for cock-ups) or cannot be bothered, then the fault for this must surely lie at the feet of the manager. Which brings one to the inference that TE may be bright and likeable but is ultimately too young, too inexperienced and, yes TOO WEAK TO face off the players. A terrible indictment I know but is there really any other inference…? So the following announcement hopefully may lead to changes, but I'm not holding my breath… “SAINTS have appointed former Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town and Charlton Athletic manager Ben Garner as Tonda Eckert's assistant coach.”

All four goals entailed defenders losing their marks and leaving them in acres of space. It was the greatest advert yet that a back three doesn't suit us.

That was a total embarrassment. I don’t agree that we controlled the game for the first 53 minutes. We had a few good chances, at least one of which should have been scored, but Middlesbrough always looked the better side. Our goalkeeper is poor, the defence is shambolic, midfield really weak and we have been missing a decent striker for a long time now. Whoever is manager has a huge task to turn this around.

It was always my fear that once TE was appointed on a full time basis and the initial manager bounce had worn off that we would revert to the mess that we saw under Will Still. TE might be a “student of the game” but either his tactics are wrong or the players aren’t executing them. My view is that it is the latter and to sort the mess out takes effective man management which I think TE maybe lacking experience with. I don’t think we will be sucked into a relegation battle but we are a million miles off being a promotion contender.

Fair, if somewhat short report Nick. Yesterday was the epitome of what is wrong with Southampton Football Club in my opinion:- I’ve posted much the same before but believe it’s worth repetition. 1.Our Owners possess no ambition whatsoever and have admitted the same through their appointed staff member at Sports Republic,(Mr Parsons if memory serves) saying the Club can’t compete in The Premiership. 2.Sports Republic’s employees ( presumably on the instructions of the Owners ) have been told to operate Southampton Football Club as a Player Trading Company with hospitality subsidiaries at St Mary’s. 3. Our current squad know full well that they are all well below Premiership standard so there is no point whatsoever for them to individually or collectively make any effort to get promoted to the top flight. It’s not in their interest to try, far better to pick up salaries most of us can only dream of by playing on “easy street” in The Championship. Given the above, no amount of tactical changes by any number of different managers or coaches will make a blind bit of difference. In summary. Our once modestly successful football club which has previously been a somewhat at times frustrating, but joy to watch and support no longer exists.

We’re not going to spend big money on anyone and then not go up. The big spend will happen in the summer of whenever we do. So do we have a team capable of promotion ? Not unless we go to a back 4 now we have 1 or possibly 2 right backs back from injury. Bazuno, Manning, Wood, THB, Roersev Downes, Bragg (Charles when fit), Jander Scienza, Armstrong, Fellows Looks like a team to me with Aziz, Stewart, Archer, Stephens, Quarshie, Robinson, Welington, a second goalkeeper on the bench. The big question is how many of these would do well in the Premier League if we get there. One or two at best so we probably need to bank another parachute payment before we go up!
dirk_doone added 10:44 - Jan 5
Sport Republic's recruitment has left us with a spineless team. In the summer, we obviously needed a goalkeeper, centre half and centre forward. Sport Republic brought in George Long, Joshua Quarshie and Damion Downs, none of who has even been good enough to be a regular starter. So, in this January window we still need a better goalkeeper, centre half and centre forward or we'll limp on with one of the weakest spines in the Championship. But now, with our current tactics, it's obvious, we also need 2 new full-backs.

I thought seriously embarrassing losses were a thing of the past and that in the Championship we would win more than we lose Yesterday's performance has knocked all the optimism out of me What have Sports Republic done to correct the last 6 match fiasco? They have appointed an assistant coach with a very iffy record as this level is concerned Even more worrying is the fact that Garner will step up when Tonda is relieved of his dutys

This three centre backs clearly isn't working and everyone except apparently our manager can see it. Based on yesterday's performance Manning should never wear the shirt again he was absolutely a useless at defending and was responsible for at least two of the goals by losing the players he was supposed to be marking. In fact any side with Jack Stephens or Ryan Manning in it's not our best 11. How long before Shea Charles is back, I would make him captain. I don't agree with the criticism of Quarshie who has probably been the best of our back 3 recently. Fellows needs to get some shooting practice that is not the first time he has wasted golden opportunities. We really should have been 2 up at half time but nothing went right again. Good to see Ross Stewart back really hope he can stay fit we need him badly.

Whilst I agree that we shouldn’t sack Eckert this season, I’m afraid that we definitely will in the Summer. He is not good enough. I also suggest we remove Rasmus from the building and our next manager should be experienced with some stature in the game. Not another analyst laptop manager who never played. I’m can’t understand why Sports Republic keep making such poor managerial appointments.
onetowatch added 12:04 - Jan 5
I agree with most of the above,, particularly about scrapping the 3 at the back, but Nick, no, surely that was not the best team we have available currently. If Manning is in our best 11 then we may as well close St Marys and stay at home. I also believe Ronnie Edwards should be involved every week and not leaving for QPR.
FrankSaint added 12:25 - Jan 5
Just a guess but maybe the reason we only play a back three is because out of all the centre backs we have in the squad there is not a pairing that, in a practice match, can defend as part of a back four against a second 11 made up of players in our squad. Which is why we do not play a back four even against the most out of form teams in our division. Compare this to Matt Targett who we did because he want good enough and has been odontoiatria in central defence in a back four for Boro even though he is a full back. And i think Taylor Bellis is a ball playing passing defender who cannot defend against any motivated, aggressive and al organised attack.
BigbadBarry8myboat added 12:26 - Jan 5
Simple, we have no organisation at the back, regardless of 4 or 5. We brought Stephens back and made him Captain again after the shambles of the Prem term. Yet he does not communicate he does not organise. We have a silent keeper who does not talk to the back line, then we have 2 Defensive midfielders in front. With potentially 7 in the defensive 3rd are players just passing the buck, the constant side to side forward backwards suggests so. We need a proper leader like Niemi was, Svensson was, or more recently like Lambert, Hammond or Davis were Regardless of managers, a team needs strength and communication on the pitch, currently we have none, and Stephens or Downes are not up to it.
FrankSaint added 12:27 - Jan 5
Correction - compare this to matt targett who we sold because he wasn't good enough and has been playing in central defence in a back four for Boro even though he is a full back.

Well I threw my ticket in the bin after the Millwall game so didnt go to Boro.. To be quite honest, I did this because I am sick of 3 centre backs, this is the third manager to try a system which does not work for our club or players. Tonda clearly has no real clue of what he is doing but then again neither does Spors. When is this jerk going to sod off elsewhere? I agree with the post above, SR have no ambition and no idea. They don’t care about the fans or the league, we are second place to Goztepe in their pecking order. This started with the Brentford Moneyball idiot and now we are stuck with a squad of lightweight players devoid of passion and thus no hope of anything better than finishing just above the relegation places. I’m absolutely livid and it’s about time the former players called out the owners for what they are.. Sport Republic, get out of our club!!!! Tonda Eckert, stop this madness of 5 at the back, you don’t even possess any wingbacks ffs!! Don’t get me started on Bazunu and Manning… 4 shots on target and 4 goals..? It’s a total disgrace, why are we persisting with the same stupid system with square pegs in round holes? I am still furious at Manning for the Millwall game where he bottled jumping for 4 headers and instead tried to injure the opponent. He does this every time!! Always plays the man, never the ball, same with the clumsy idiot at the back, Wood. They both need to be removed from the pitch and sold. These muppets at the back never communicate with each other so they get in each others way all the time and don’t pick up their markers. It’s a total f joke!! Sick of it all, Soorts Republic and Dragan, once again, get the f out of our club. And now the number 2..? Who…? Get stuffed…

One new signing in January isn’t enough. We all know we need a goalkeeper, a full-back, and a commanding centre-back. However, if we can only bring in one player, a physical No. 9 should be the top priority. This game is a perfect example: against teams that sit deep, we either lack a clinical striker to put us ahead or a strong plan B from the bench. Today, we missed chances to go one or two goals up before conceding. Despite defensive weaknesses, scoring goals changes the mindset of players.

I suspect that the complexity required to work with our dysfunctional system is one of the reasons why we struggle so much in 2nd halves or fall apart when the going gets tough. If you play in a 4-4-2 or equivalent, you generally know your role, where you are supposed to be and what your responsibilities are. What we have now is a load of tweaks, tactics and directives overlaid on to our misfiring 3 CBs or 5 at the back. For example, the zonal marking, the CBs needing to shift over to cover the space when our Wing backs go forward. Or when we play it out from the back at goal kicks with half our squad staying back as passing options, whilst we try and play our way through the banks of opposition players pressing us. The last 5 managers have all tried to make it work. What we've ended up with is a complicated mess where no one is doing their job or taking responsibility and they all just stick to a single position or role through transitions of play. Resulting in loads of space for the opposition to play in and we fail to provide the intended defensive cover and passing options. Our players get too tired, aren't fit enough or are too confused to keep up the tactics for a whole match and just revert to doing one thing. i.e. our CBs just stay in the 18 yard box, our wing backs don't track back and so on. Meaning that everyone is leaving someone else to do their job. Long and short of it is the same conclusion. The system doesn't work, as we all know having seen years of this tedious passing around at the back garbage, getting overrun in midfield and seeing unchallenged crosses coming in to our box. No amount of tweaking is going to fix it. And we shouldn't waste more money on buying players to paper over the cracks to defend the system at all costs. Sadly, we can all see the writing on the wall for the "new boss same as the old boss" again. Which is a real shame because Eckert clearly does have a great depth of football knowledge, unlike some other SR appointments. Yet he clearly has no authority, confidence or courage to change things, more keen to toe the line for SR and gaslight us in match interviews that things are better than they look. He's welcome to live and die with 3 CBs at the back. But until someone changes that, our football will continue to suck. Good luck with that, Eckert you mentalist. He might be a nice guy, like the last guy was. But unless he's willing to go to 4 at the back, he's done. And we all know it. The weird thing is, Goztepe and Valenciennes both played 4-2-3 1 in their last matches. So its not even like we are following an SR playing model if none of our sister clubs play this awful 3 at the back either.

It’s beyond belief that after appointing Will Still they follow up with another coach who,s too young And lacking in Authority.Would have been better left with the U21,s because he seemed to be Producing some good lads. The pity is when he,s relieved of his duties he.ll be lost to the club Completely, where as he,d be a good member of the coaching team.Manning let’s the team down time and again with his woeful defending and Bazunu had another nightmare.Hope Stewart stays fit If we don’t improve we could soon be dragged into a relegation battle.

Well previous contributors have said it all. When Matt Targett left for Aston Villa he was a fringe member of the squad, he looked head and shoulders above anything we have which demonstrates how we have declined. I have witnessed the 8-0 thrashing by Everton and the well publicised 7-0 humiliation by Leeds this lot unlike previous Saints teams that dragged themselves back from the brink this poor excuse for a Southampton team look incapable of doing this. We looked for an experienced back up to this Manager and we get Simon Garner. Simon who I hear you all shout WHO? He must be cheap which appears the SR way. This Manager has not heeded the very strong noises about the lopped sided and system he persists in playing by the majority of supporters and he will pay the price as if continues with a number of individuals that are extremely poor and do not deserve to wear our shirt. You have been warned Eckert!!

Some very good points made above. Couldn't agree more wth saintmark1976. The owners clearly have no amition for the club and seem to contimue to stumble from week to week, presumably in the hope of a big money day, when someone comes up with an attractive offer to buy the club, and then they can jet ofv into the sunset!
