Southampton Confirm Adam Armstrong Departure
Monday, 2nd Feb 2026 21:57

Saints have confirmed that Adam Armstrong has left the club in a permanent move to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, a little disappointing to see such a short statement in appreciation for his service.

Southampton FC announced the departure of Adam Armstrong after nearly 5 year seasons service with the following statement.

"Adam Armstrong has completed a permanent transfer to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"The move brings an end to a four-and-a-half-year stay at St Mary’s, where Adam made 174 appearances scoring 43 goals.

"We would like to thank Adam for his effort and commitment during his time in a Saints shirt and wish him well for the future."

It is sad to see that the club media department could not give a more fitting tribute to the man who scored 38 League goals in 148 games, with a grand total of 43 goals in 173 games in all competitions.

He was magnificent two seasons ago when his goals and assists fired us to promotion and who can remember when he scored the only goal against Leeds United at Wembley in May 2024 to sent us back to the Premier League, in a game that many Saints supporters consider their happiest and greatest moment in supporting the club.

I wish him well in helping Wolverhampton Wanderers try to escape relegation and for the future.

I can't help feeling though that in the long term this will be a wise decision, although he had a burst of scoring after Tonda Eckert's appointment as manager and his 11 goals and 4 assists saw him flourish, you had the feeling that he had lost his mojo, he hasn't scored in almost two months, a run of 9 League games.

From this perspective perhaps the club needed new blood and with the last year of his contract looming, it will perhaps be good business to cash in now.

The Adam Armstrong of two seasons ago and his 11 goal burst mid season this term will be missed, but his form earlier in the season and indeed in his last run of games perhaps would not be missed in the upcoming matches as much as it could have been.

Great striker for us in Championship but couldn't seem to make the step up in the PL. Always put a shift in but oddly never seemed to really connect with the fans, even after scoring the goal that took us back up.

Hope it goes well for him at Wolves.

On the surface a crazy decision and a ridiculous price. It would appear they wanted him out of the dressing room quickly. Big loss.

Can’t see him doing much at Wolves.

I always wondered if he had the motivation to fire us towards another promotion only to risk getting sidelined again in the PL. His best level was the Championship and the transfer to Wolves is very much with one eye on next season.

His goal at Wembley is the stand out for many Saints fans. All the best Adam.

It has to be said that at a time when the club was yo-yoing between leagues, Adam was one of the few names who earned his place and - given the chances - did score goals.
Like all strikers, had periods when his form likened the proverbial sauce-bottle.. (long dry spells, and then all at once). This season was typical, when it took 11 games before he got his first, but then he scored 6 times in 5 games, after which he had blank 10 games. Has reached an age when he is still a first-choice candidate to play, and even if Wolves get relegated, he is experienced in the Championship where he is known to succeed. Overall, I must admit he DAJFU, even in the worst times, but I just hope we don't have to face him too often. good luck Adam.

Agree that the statement on the website lacked class. Armstrong deserved better having made a significant contribution during a very difficult time. Whatever his limitations he always appeared to work very hard for the team in a variety of roles. Objectively, his output has been very mixed and his exit gives us an opportunity to play with a more traditional centre forward. I still felt he would have been a valuable asset either as a second striker or playing off the right but I guess it was down to money at the end of the day.

Agreed. Armstrong deserved a more appreciative and respectful send off than this. What’s wrong with the club’s media department ? Players now just contracted objects. Armstrong gave good service to Saints and his departing personal message (thanks BBC website) revealed a genuine connection with the club. A real shame the club couldn’t reciprocate. Not the first time either (Chris Nicol comes to mind).
