Saints And Pompey Get Heavily Fined For Derby Day Handbags At Dawn
Wednesday, 18th Feb 2026 13:26

A lot of money was spent in keeping the two sets of supporters apart off the pitch when Southampton travelled to Portsmouth last month, but it didn't stop the players themselves having a bit of argy bargy on it and now both clubs have been fined.

BBC Sport have reported that Southampton & Portsmouth have been fined for the melee during the recent clash at Fratton Park.

Both clubs admitted a charge of failing to ensure that their players behaved in an improper and/or provocative way,, external with Saints being handed a £50,000 fine, while Portsmouth must pay £25,000.

That seemed a bit unfair as although the incident was sparked by a heavy tackle on Flynn Downes, it was the Portsmouth players who escalated it by piling in to Downes thus provoking the Saints players to respond.

There was also another incident earlier in the game in roughly the same position in front of the North Stand where some of the Blue Few seemed to try and pull Leo Scienza into the crowd, something that happened back in May 2019 during a League One play off game when Sunderland player Luke O'Brien was hauled into the crowd in roughly the same spot.

Scienza seemed unphased by the experience and after being thoroughly sprayed by Disinfectant by the Southampton medical staff was able to continue, he gained some revenge later in the game, when after scoring he ran the whole length of the North Stand in celebration.

You can just walk away. Downes needs to be taught professionalism.

Lucky to be able to walk away after that challange.

Lampard punping his fists at the crowd shouting f88k off repeatedly and persuing players after the match seems a but worse IMO, only 30k

I had no problems I thought it was pretty full blooded but it was the derby people wanted. If anything the ref could have controlled it more, was obvious it was going to escalate , Pompey were obviously going in hard to make up for lack of ability

Reading the FA Report our increased fine was due to this being a repeat offence in the last 12 months. PLease don't shoot the messenger. The full report can be accessed via the BBC Sport article. Saints did not request a personal hearing and the matter was dealt with in correspondence the report says.
