Southampton At Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict

There were some that said the Saints defence would not be needed much up at Hillsborough, but they were wrong , with all three goals being scored by those playing in the back four.

I said in the preview that this was always going to be more about the result than the performance, that we should not underestimate the battling attributes of the Owls to keep going and make it hard for us and that proved to be the case.

In truth we really should have won this with a little more ease, after going 2-0 up at the break courtesy of another James Bree thunderbolt and Ryan Manning doing his impersonation of Matthew Le Tissier with a free kick in first half injury time.

But in the second half we took our foot off the gas and had our usual lapse of concentration to let Wednesday get back into the game on 57 minutes and for a while with the crowd roused behind them, the home side looked to produce an equaliser and end their losing streak.

But on 71 minutes we restored the two goal lead and saw out the game, although in injury time it took a Daniel Peretz save to keep Wednesday at arms length and not make it a nervy last few minutes.

Given we were missing a fair chunk of our squad, Welington & Robinson long term and Flynn Downes was rested and Ross Stewart & Caspar Jander with both unable to even sit on the bench, you wondered whether this would be a problem.

The answer was it wasn't and in the main we put in a competent performance that expended our unbeaten run to 9 games.

In truth it was all about the result, anything less than a win would have been a disaster, but we got the job done.

But it got us no nearer the top six, with Hull winning at Portsmouth that was a bitter sweet result, that kept the Tigers 7 points ahead of us, If Pompey had beaten them it would have opened out our chances of catching them.

Likewise Nathan Jones did us no favours, Charlton dominated the game and almost equalised right at the death, but ultimately Wrexham scraped a win that keeps them 4 points in front of us.

This was a game where the unsung heroes once again stepped up, James Bree & Ryan Manning both scoring quality goals and both are in the best form of their careers at St Mary's.

Manning deserves a special mention, he has often born the brunt of the fans frustrations, but his contributions so far are 6 goals in the Championship plus 3 assists, including 3 superb free kicks that Le God himself would be proud of.

Cameron Bragg also came into the side and alongside Shea Charles ran the midfield.

But we should not get too complacent here, after all Wednesday haven't so much as drawn a game since the turn of the year, we were on a potential banana skin here, but we had to take 3 points and we did do.

A special mention for the Southampton supporters well over 3,000 of them made the trip to South Yorkshire for one of the longest trips of the season. It was again superb support in an away end that being on two levels made it difficult to get people in unison at times.

Now we have a week off from the Championship and face Fulham in the FA Cup and a chance to have a well earned break for some players, Tonda Eckert has to manage his squad and make sure that he can keep players fit.

But we have marched on in these games, no team has a better record than us in the last 6 games and we have to keep this record going.

My first point is the way Tonda managed the squad for this one He sensibly left Downes out to avoid a yellow card suspension, gave Bragg some well earnt minutes and took no chance with Stewart This could well improve our chances in the next 3 games
I've only seen highlights but everyone seemed to play a part.Unusual to have all our goals scored by defenders but their reputation is growing and future opponents won't know who to mark at set pieces Cyle was given a couple of good chances by Azaz and could have given us an even better result
Most of us are probably hoping to catch Wrexham but a softer target may be Hull.Their next 3 games are pretty tough and all potential losses.Therfore our next 3 become must wins if we are to take advantage of any slip upsy

For me it feels like the ghost of last season has finally been laid to rest. The shape and attitude of the team is good and we have a squad that is fit for purpose and a manager who is willing to learn from mistakes.
I have nothing but praise for the contribution Adam Armstrong made to the club, but his departure has worked out well for everyone, well apart from him possibly?

Great win, And personally I don’t give a monkeys who scores so long as they go in! We March On etc. although in all honesty, in form we may be, but we still need an awful lot to go wrong with several of the teams above us to make 6th spot
And TE I reckon generally has been managing the squad really well, with one unfortunate exception:
I do feel sorry for Cameron Archer, who made two contributions on Saturday. He “brilliantly” managed to get in the way of a certain Scienza goal. And he missed yet another sitter when it looked easier to score.
He has had so many chances, from which he appears not to have improved one jot, and arguably with his confidence clearly shot, has gone backwards. So what to do with him?
Well if we do happen to get promoted, there is no way he is even approaching a PL player.
And as it is he is struggling - to put it mildly - even to be a Championship one.
I think he should not be in the squad again this season, and should be shipped out either on loan or permanently come the summer. Sorry Cameron, but I do think you are out of your depth.
PS. If as I suspect he comes on in the Fulham game, that will be a real test, if not the final one.

The result was earned, but we looked a bit shaky at times. Overall, the back four were our best players, but not just because of the goal tally, but defended well-most of the time.

The midfield combination of Charles (still not 100% fit) and Bragg (who DAJFU in his occasional games) seemed to work well enough, but with 15 shots, the strike force might have managed one or two more goals. It's not fair to expect Scienza to be MoM in every game, but Matsuki has improved a lot, and is a good alternative to Fellows (who hasn't quite gelled yet , nor has he scored either). Good starting line-up, by "protecting " our regular names who have put in a shift in recent matches.

Once again, am glad we have Bree back in the fold, (which is more luck than judgement by loaning him out and not selling) ..when Still " cleaned house " in the summer and sent away several of our most experienced Championship players.
