Southampton v Arsenal The FA Cup Verdict
Sunday, 5th Apr 2026 10:02

Who would have predicted that Saints would celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first visit to Wembley and FA Cup Final win over Manchester United, with a return to Wembley albeit for an FA Cup semi final.

It is fair to say that the only people in St Mary's and perhaps the whole country who were confident of a Southampton win in this game were Tonda Eckert and his players.

In the build up to this game, Saints were very much the underdogs and the manager remained his cool self, the most that he said was that he had spotted a weakness or two in the Arsenal side.

The big question was about his team selection, would he prioritise the Wrexham game on Tuesday as Mikel Arteta would clearly be doing the same for the Gunners Champions League game against Sporting Club of Lisbon.

The answer was no, Eckert put out just about the strongest side that he could and to boost Saints fans hopes, Leo Scienza was back in the side.

You could feel in the air there was a different sort of atmosphere in St Mary's, the fans were up for it, there were some on social media who felt that the seats that were not taken up by season ticket holders who opted to watch the game on TV would be taken up by Arsenal fans, the answer was that the seats were filled by fans that seemed to want to stand up and get behind the team.

It was never going to be easy, you didn't need to be a genius to know that Arsenal were going to have the bulk of possession, were going to have the most attempts on goal etc, our job was clear, get behind the ball and make sure that those attempts weren't too damaging and then go on the break.

In many respects this was a repeat of the last round when we beat Premier League Fulham, it was about dig in and when we got the ball make sure that we got forward quickly

The game started in that fashion and stayed that way to the end, but in between it saw Saints counter attack with venom.

Most Saints were happy just to still be on level terms as the game crept towards half time, but on 35 minutes the unthinkable happened, a James Bree cross looked more hopeful than anything else, but Arsenal defender Ben White misjudged the flight of the ball and Ross Steward chested it down and calmly took a few strides and slammed it past the keeper, to lift the roof off St Mary's.

Now the fans were starting to join Tonda Eckert in his belief that we could win this one.

The second half was more of the same and you could see Saints legs tiring and the Gunners took advantage and finished off a well worked move with an equaliser on 68 minutes.

You might have thought that this would crush the team and silence the fans, but it was the opposite, it seemed to increase the intensity, a couple of quick substitutions brought on fresh legs and a third 5 minutes later brought on strength in Shea Charles.

This would prove crucial and as Arsenal poured forward the team upped their resolve and the fans upped the volume, the Arsenal onslaught that surely that equaliser would bring and end our valiant efforts was not allowed to happen.

Then on 85 minutes came the moment, Tom Fellows slid a short pass to Shea Charles and the sub finished with aplomb to once again lift the roof off.

The big question now was whether Arsenal had anything left, certainly their fans didn't seem to think so, some were actually leaving, truly puzzling as their was clearly going to be at least 10 minutes left including injury time.

Arsenal tried, but the Southampton team would not let them get another equaliser, the fans would not let them concede a goal, people were on their feet now and roaring the team on.

The final whistle saw one of the biggest celebrations ever seen at St Mary's, no one left the fans stayed and cheered the team, they sang and they hugged complete strangers stood next to them, they knew they had seen a pivotal moment and that the dark days of the first couple of months were over.

The Red & White Wall of the Northam End was a sight to see at the end as it celebrated en masse and the rest of the ground was just as raucous, it was good to see Taylor Harwood-Bellis call his team to got to the Kingsland and the rest of the ground to celebrate with everyone not just the Northam.

Many needed a drink after that and the Northam fanzone was packed, the chant of Yellows Yellows YELLOWS ! was taken up by those queueing to get over the footbridge on the concourse outside, it was a truly special evening.

Was there a Saints player who didn't merit a 10 out of 10 rating, I cannot think of one and I think that if you can you are being a little uncharitable.

Talking of uncharitable, apparently Mikel Arteta accused us of practising the dark arts of football, pot calling kettle black I think, yes Arsenal had a weakened side out, but that was Arteta's choice, we can only beat what is put in front of us, I would put a few quid that many of his missing players at St Mary's will miraculously recover for their game with Sporting in midweek in the Champions League.

Arteta could have taken this game seriously and put out a stronger side, but he didn't and that is his problem not ours, the fact that we didn't make it easy for him, seems to have riled him up, how dare little Southampton beat us.

Now we have a Wembley appearance to look forward to and the draw is this evening is after the conclusion of the remaining quarter final tie between West Ham & Leeds, that kicks off at 4.30 so the draw could be anywhere between 6.30 & 7.30.

But we have to keep our focus now, because we have a bigger game to worry about when we go to Wrexham on Tuesday night, we have to make sure that we don't suffer a hangover from this game, Wrexham will have watched this game and will be worried.

Let's hope that Leo Scienza has not suffered any reaction to his groin injury and that everyone is fit and raring to go.

10/10 for all players, ditto for crowd - as soon as the Arsenal equaliser went in, saints fans belted out “Oh when the Saints….” But most of all, TE totally out thought Arteta before and during the game. His gameplan, tactics and team motivation simply outclassed his opposite number.

Good report Nick.

Arteta really is an odious sort isn’t he.

A perfect example of a man with a balanced personality.

He’s got a chip on both shoulders.

Arsenal were one of the worst teams I've seen this year at St Marys. When they attacked nearly every time they put a foot on the ball clueless as to what to do next. The defence were amateurish and thinly covered the space. Eckert bypassed their midfield with penetrating passes. After halftime they came out and made no changes. A score line of 5-1 would not have been appropriate. Saints were assured victory, especially after Quarsie came on...🤣🇵🇪🇵🇪🇵🇪🇵🇪😇

Let’s be clear here. This wasn’t a flukey win with a scrambled goal one end and desperate defending for 90mins. The better team won!

Yes Arsenal had lions share of the possession and at times we did through in some last ditch blocks but we scored two great goals and could have had at least 2 or 3 more. Tonda identified some weaknesses and the players executed perfectly.

Arsenal really do lack class. When a club hasn’t won the league for a while most neutrals will want them to win. Not this year. I truly hope that they go from a quadruple to zero. Ben White should have had at least two yellows but the ref bottled it.

Anyway onto Wembley, hoping to draw the winner of Leeds/West Ham….

Super result, who needs Max Howman when you have Cam Bragg!
Only pick up on one point Nick, Stewart called for the cross & raised his right arm, Bree looked up before delivering.
I think Arsenal expected it to be easier & got what they deserved. Joe Cole said Arsenal had an easy draw when the numbers came out, so up him too!!
Still buzzing now 😇😇😇😇😇😇

Every player 10 out of 10, it was a genuine team effort and just reward for Tonda and the coaching staff. On an individual note I thought Manning did a terrific job in containing Arsenal's best player despite picking up a yellow card midway in the first half.
I have no idea whether the much advertised Arsenal injuries impacted on their team selection but the inference is that our team was at full strength. We know that injuries and suspensions also prevented four or five of our players being available for the match.
Whatever happens in the weeks ahead let's not forget how far we have progressed in a short time. The icing on the cake would probably be promotion so it's a good time to shelve the dreams of Cup glory until the semi final. Hopefully six points added to the tally in the week ahead.

Terrific performance, only down side is the premier league vultures will have seen just how good Leo is. Agree with the above that how White avoided a booking was beyond belief. Think Ryan Manning may now not be available for the semi.

Feared the worse when the penalty appeal early doors was dismissed, difficult to see from the angles whether Gabriel contacted Leo but the pundits were quick to dismiss it as usual when it is us. Referee got better fortunately as things went on except for his White omission.

Have to say our manager deserves at least 10 out of 10. A master tactian. Now let’s focus on Wrexham.

I agree with your comment about Ben White.
He constantly committed fouls & gave away free kicks & got away with it,
Ryan Manning commits just one foul & gets booked for it which means that he cannot play at Wembley, just hope that Wellington is fit to play.
What I was most impressed with was our attitude, we played without fear.

That was one of the best cup games we’ve played in my 40+ years supporting Saints, and without doubt one of the greatest nights St Mary’s has ever witnessed. The atmosphere was incredible from start to finish.

Nights like this are exactly why you always go, never assume, and always hold onto hope rather than expectation, because you truly never know what might happen and you have to be there for these moments.

Brilliant. COYR.

Amazing to have 2 prizes to play for at the end of a season. I thought the results on Friday were pretty good for us as well.

Hopefully no injuries picked up last night and Downes and Matsuki rested for Wrexham .

Amazing how Tonda has made the team flexible in its set up and all the players are responding - Fellows last night almost got that elusive goal but his wing play and assist was excellent.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of players are putting themselves in the shop window but just got to enjoy it while it lasts. Certainly showed that, if promoted, we could hold our own back in the PL, which is more than we did last season. Sign up Peretz Larin and Tonda ASAP and keep managing Stewart's health - his goals could be vital in the big games.

Shoutout to Ryan manning , the game hinged on him committing that foul early on , on the most dangerous player on the pitch , superb performance by him & the rest but he was exceptional

There isn't a bunch of fans of any team,in any stadium in the world that would have supported their team better than we supported ours last night If you were there give yourself a pat on the back .After the trauma of last season we deserve this and long may it last
Every player 10 out of 10 Tonda and his coaches 11 out of 10
This wasn't Arsenal's first team we know but the starting 11 and the subs would probably beat any team in the bottom half in the EPL That gives me hope that if promoted we will be able to compete as long as we retain the Eckert factoru

What a great night. Agree with so much written above.

A few observations about Saints: Not only are we playing better tactically as a Team, but pretty much every individual has been coached/motivated into a better player. Manning, for example, has often been good going forward but he seems now, a much better defender, which after all, is his primary role. Stewart has the abitity to hold the ball up with with back to goal and then use it well, reminiscent of a Ricky Lambert sort of way. Even a word for Larin, it was his strength to hold off the defender and give others the chance to power forward, that led to the winner. Tonda and his Team really have delivered a capable and well motivated team. Let's hope they get sufficient chance to catch their breath and re-group before Tuesday evening.

What a change in our fortunes since Tonda became out manager. He has transformed the way Saints play and the 'Southampton Way' seems to be back on course. It was a great performance last night and it was so good to see Arteta be on edge at the interviews. Did he praise the saints? Not a hope. Still not happy with the workload from Larin. There were times when he could have run back to help. The smile is back on Saints fans faces, let's hope it will be maintained on Tuesday night. After two years of gloom, even this 75 year old is smiling.

Does anyone agree with me that Arsenal look SO over-coached and lacking in spontaneity? Every movement they made seemed to be totally according to the book so that, when the impossible happened and they went behind, they just didn’t have a Plan B - and how familiar does that sound to us? For example those ridiculous little tipptappy corners they tried, half a dozen times was it? It was all so formulaic, a waste of time mainly and dare one say it BORING?!

But compare that to us who seemed last night to be playing so much more by instinct, playing down the wings and through the middle and HAVING FUN.

Furthermore, the one thing I thought Arteta was good at getting into his own team’s minds was determination and resilience. Well judging by how low their heads were at half time, most already knew that the game was up.

And again did WE ever look like giving up? Not for one moment.

Wemberlee here we come …

After years of boring football how brilliant is it to see Saints attacking at speed and direct balls causing problems to the opposition.

We put up with the Russball experiment - it failed - this is proper football and I hope we never forget it.

Someone mentioned Larin above - 100% right - holding up the ball and flicking passing or moving it to Fellows or Jander was brilliant - hasn’t had the plaudits ugly he might have but he was key to the winner.

Up the Saints
