Southampton At Wrexham The Preview Tuesday, 7th Apr 2026 09:04 After the full on excitement of Saturday evening, Tonda Eckert needs to get his team's feet back on the ground for the trip to Wrexham, a match could be pivotal as to how the season ends for Saints. Overall the results went fairly well yesterday for Southampton as they sat Easter Monday out and watched and waited, the first focus was on Hull City who drew with Coventry and are now 5 points ahead of us and we have two games in hand. Millwall's shock defeat means they are still 9 points ahead and if we won our two games in hand, they we would be within catching distance, as are 3rd placed Middlesbrough, so it is not out of the question that we could yet make 4th or 5th place. But tonight is the big test as to whether we can sustain this promotion challenge, Wrexham are a point ahead of us, having played a game more, victory tonight at the Racecourse Ground would see us 2 points ahead and still with that game in hand. Even a draw would be acceptable in that yes they would still be ahead, but we have the momentum. Defeat would be a big blow, but not necessarily terminal one, but let's not go there just yet.
One of the things I like about Tonda Eckert is that he takes every game as it comes, on Saturday night he played just about his strongest team, many thought that might be a risk with this game only 3 days later, but he concentrated on the Cup game before this one. Hopefully everyone came through Saturday OK and we are raring to go this evening. I don't expect to see many changes for the team against Wrexham, but I think there could be two, perhaps even 3, firstly in the centre of midfield, where Tonda Eckert has Flynn Downes returning from FA Cup suspension and also Shea Charles has been showing form after his return from injury, I would not be surprised to see both in with Cameron Bragg & Caspar Jander dropping to the bench.
Up front I would also not be surprised to see Ross Stewart drop to the bench, not for any reason other than historically he struggles to play two games in such a short space of time. Another reason why I would expect Cyle Larin to get the nod is the physical aspect of this game, Wrexham are big and strong, we need to combat that before we can play a more flowing style of play. These are good problems to have for Tonda and he will have a lot of options on the bench whichever team he selects.
I cannot emphasise the importance of the game, I suspect that is just what Tonda Eckert will be telling his players, a feature of this run has been the methodical way that our manager has gone about his job, calmly and quietly, just how it should be. So here we go again, the games will come thick and fast now and we need to utilise every player in the squad, we need to utilise every advantage we can get.
On Saturday St Mary's was a cauldron of noise, the 1,300 Saints fans at Wrexham tonight will make themselves heard and this needs to be the case going forward, whether it's Derby at home or any game, the Saints fans need to bring back the spirit of the play offs two years ago.
