Southampton 3 v 0 Blackburn Rovers

Southampton V Blackburn Rovers The Verdict
Wednesday, 15th Apr 2026 08:38

The Saints marched on with a win against Blackburn making it 18 games unbeaten in all competitions and 15 in the Championship, which with Ipswich losing at Portsmouth, meant we are within spitting distance of automatic promotion.

Cameron Archer pulled his bow back and fired the arrows that propelled Saints to the verge of securing a play off spot and also an outside chance of automatic promotion.

Tonda Eckert once again shuffled his pack, leaving key players such as Ross Stewart, Caspar Jander & Leo Scienza on the bench with Finn Azaz rested completely, but still his starting line up was far too strong for the Lancashire side.

It was not a surprise to find that the visitors had not come to attack, even though they had included ex Saint Nathan Redmond for his full debut, thus the early stages did not see too many clear cut chances, but in the 24th minute the scoring was opened when Cameron Archer latched on to a lovely through ball from Kuryu Matsuki and crossed low and hard perfectly to Cyle Larin who fired home from close range.

That put Saints in command, but they didn't double their lead until the 43rd minute and the goal had a bit of luck about it, Shea Charles crossed from the dead ball across and a poor clearance rebounded off Ryan Manning and into the net.

There was a suspicion that the ball was going wide and went in off a defender and thus an own goal, but it was credited to Manning and nobody cared as Saints were now two up.

The second half was pretty much the same as the first, although you sensed that Blackburn had heard that Pompey were 2-0 up and they now seemed to have an urgency about them not present in the first half.

Saints were in control and the only real scare came midway in the half when Blackburn had 3 shots in quick succession, rattling the bar in one of them.

At the other end Kuryu Matsuki blazed over when it looked easier to score.

But Saints had more in reserve and even a raft of changes did not weaken the side and it was fitting that the final goal fell to Cameron Archer who probably had his best game for the club, finishing with aplomb to put the game beyond any doubt in the 86th minute to add to his first half assist.

It highlighted the strength in depth that Saints have these days and how they have built a squad that is arguably the strongest in the division and has marched from mid table in January to 4th place and within 3 points of Ipswich in 2nd.

The Tractor Boys have a game in hand so are still favourites for second place but that game in hand is essentially going to be on the 25th April when we play Arsenal in the FA Cup semi final.

In the meantime Saints just have to keep on winning and hope that Ipswich drop a point or two.

There final 5 games are Middlesbrough home on Sunday, Charlton away next Wednesday, the game in hand on the 25th West Brom away, followed by their trip to St Mary's in the penultimate game of the season on Tuesday 28th April.

That would leave them with the final day of the season where they take on Queens Park Rangers at home, whilst we are at Preston.

So this season could yet go down to the wire,

Tonda Eckert will be taking every game as it comes, concentrate on winning our own games and then worry about what is happening elsewhere, this has proven to work well in the last 3 months.

Personally in unbeaten runs it is the League that counts and with 15 unbeaten and 6 wins in a row, we are coming up on the rails and Ipswich must now be looking over their shoulders with a nervy glance.

Unfortunately, it's not right to say that if we beat Swansea and Ipswich draw with Middlesbrough then automatic promotion will be in our hands. If that happens they'll be a point ahead of us with a game in hand. Even if we beat them, they would remain a point ahead of us if they win their game in hand.

Ipswich need to lose two of their remaining five games, and we need to win all of our remaining four games, and make up the difference of 6 goals between us. It's doable but not in our hands and still a longshot.

In over 50 years I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a well rounded Saints squad. Everyone is playing their part; Larin has proved to be a real asset and I’m really pleased that Archer had such a great game.

I’m having to eat my words, as for most of the season I didn’t want us to get promoted, fearing a repetition of last season, but now I see it essential to keep this squad together.

Fair play, Portsmouth. I think it will be key to keep an eye on our goal difference.

Come on you SAINTS!!!!!

Yes, a pretty fair summary even if I think you have done a bit of a undeserved downer on Blackburn. Because, apart from their revolting, dog sick, nappy brown kit - the designer of that definitely didn’t go to Specsavers - played some entertaining stuff at times, on which basis I would be very surprised if they do go down.

And well done Cameron A. What a game! What an assist! What a goal! I am sure I am not alone in thinking that, up until a few weeks ago, he was a complete waste of space. Clearly TE saw something in him which a lot of us didn’t, so lots of humble pie-eating. And particularly good to see Kyle Larin giving him well deserved praise for the top quality cross that led to the first goal.

The only fly in the ointment was the due performance of poor Tom Fellowes. Because apart from a couple of decent crosses where he had run to the by-line, he now seems incapable - or unwilling - to run forward with the ball and either goes sideways or passes backwards, thus causing any forward momentum to be lost. And I noticed in H2 he was virtually ignored by the backs who invariably passed down the left rather than right to him.

That said, I am not without hope, on the evidence of the improvement seen in CA, as I am sure there is a quality player aching to get out, which let’s hope TE can find.

Finally, I loved the way Tonda said how we had done Pompey a favour by winning, rather than the other way round, when asked about them being Ipswich. Class.

The job Tonda has done, particularly since the turn of the year, has been miraculous. He's got everyone playing to their potential and bought in 3 key players who have made significant difference.

However, all his incredible work will be eclipsed if he can get Archer playing to his potential - and he has certainly got plenty. Based on not just his performance but players reaction to his assist and goal he's been spoken to, given options about his attitude and has reacted positively.

What an incredible 4 months. COYRs

Ipswich have some tough games coming up If they draw a couple or lose one AND lose to us then the party can start
Spors and Tonda have been a revelation. Many thought he was an unacceptable SR risk so many portions of humble pie have been taken
It's impossible to predict his line up but every starting eleven have been a match for whoever we are playing How many hours he must spend on analysing the next opponent and finding the solutions before we've seen the problem He is a top top coach in the making

In my humble opinion I feel Fellowes would be helped by playing in the 2nd team thus keeping match fitness but gaining some confidence. He does not shine at the moment but I'm sure its in there. It need to be polished and coaxed from him. Even his compatriots seem to play that way.

It has certainly paid off having just two centre backs, Harwood Bellis & Stephens staying in the team all the time. Also a shout for Manning, so berated previously, has improved defensively, and has contributed enormously going forward. Highest scoring left back in the division?

It's definitely time to open the book of cliches about singing fat ladies, no guarantees in football etc, etc. "It's the hope that kills you" is definitely my top cliche at present. So, just to blight the aspirations of Ipswich, I'm going to say that we have no chance of getting automatic promotion.

Regarding the game yesterday evening I'm, again, amazed at how Tonda can switch the squad around without impacting on the team performance. Like many supporters I haven't been singing the praises of Cameron Archer and then he eclipses the efforts of Edozie and Fellows who have both consistently lacked an end product.

I think it's fair to say that we are definitely in the play-offs and that is an incredible achievement. So, our destiny is still in our own hands one way or another. I'm not a Buddhist but I'm going to stick with the theory of the "givens of life" and take each game without fear. It appears that the players have already subscribed to that attitude.

I'm surprised to see a few down comments about Fellows. I think he got off to a poor start for us being used as a wing back by Still. He was running from far too deep, which isn't his natural game. Wingers are often going to frustrate as their end ball is often a cross into space with all the uncertainty that involves.

Although he needs to get that so far elusive first goal, he often goes on those great diagonal runs which create space for others. He got a cracking assist in a recent game too. If he is our lowest performer then to my eyes we aren't doing bad.

I'm afraid I'm with those having a bit of a downer on Fellows. He needs to take his cue from Leo, who knows his job is to make things happen and will always die trying. Fellows needs to back himself more, rather than look for the sideways or backward pass. It's the same with Edozie - not enough end product.
Tonda could yet unlock the undoubted potential. Once he finally realised that playing 3 centre backs was never going to work, he hasn't put a foot wrong.

I agree with SaintPaul thought Fellows was decent enough I reserve judgement on Archer till he does it against a decent team

In support of Tom Fellows in addition to SaintPaulVW and Farlow against Arsenal was the creator, driving at the Arsenal defence before passing to Charles, who scored an excellent goal to give us the winner. He puts so much work in throughout the games and again went the full 90 minutes!

I'm unsure about Archer but, have even greater doubts over Tom Fellows who, unlike Edosie mostly avoids going outside his man and rarely delivers a telling pass. I also thought last night that the defenders opted for Manning as the most likely positive option. It's a shame that Fellows is seen by some as our weak link and, hopefully, Tonda will address that. The danger for Tom's future is the return of Jay Robinson because, if he gets going and commands a starting slot, Fellows will lose game time. Although we won 3-0 there was a point in the game where we went casual and a poor Blackburn side was given hope. Yes, we did regain control but, my view was that the initial subs resulted in an imbalance in the side, with less of a bridge between the defence and the attack. In the first half I thought that Blackburn looked overawed by the prospect of trying to wrest anything from this game. I hope we can similarly frighten Swansea into abject surrender.

Coming to the end of the season, our players and others are tired. They are under constant pressure and they are still delivering the goods. Fellows has played well this season but seems a little jaded. Archer finally got one and we now take a 3-0 win as routine! Never as a Saints supporter ( 50 plus years and losing count,) were there such days. We will make the playoffs, not automatic promotion and if we don't go up, I'll be disappointed but not heartbroken because my Saints are back, punching above their weight. Thank you all for a great season, however it ends.

Fellows gets us up the pitch alot and keeps ball far better than Robinson, though Robinson is very raw he has more goal threat
Fellows has been a great team player, but is missing something to take the next step and can drift away from real positive play too often sometimes
Let's back him, back all the players, and roar saints to a potentially unthinkably brilliant end to the season

Boys and girls, why are you ignoring Millwall, a point above us? They are in a prime position to take advantage of all the top six playing each other in the final games. They have NO top six teams to play
(QPR, Stoke, Leicester and Oxford). Yes a couple fighting at the bottom but all nice and winnable. Everyone is banging on about us catching Ipswich not understanding that Millwall are the ones that can gate crash the party. They've stumbled in their last two games but they fancying their chances!
