The Yellow Wall Of Wembley
Wednesday, 15th Apr 2026 22:08

Back in 1976 a famous banner in the Saints end said "Yellow And Blue Versus Manchester Who" and the back half of the Tunnel end of Wembley Stadium was a sea of Yellow and Blue, against Manchester City Saints supporters need to be The Yellow Wall.

This year has seen celebrations for the 5oth anniversary of our Wembley win on 1st May 1976 against Manchester United when a goal from Bobby Stokes gave us a memorable first ever major trophy.

In every FA Cup match this season Saints have worn their commemorative Yellow kit rather than the normal red & white or away kit.

It almost seemed written in the stars that we would make a return to Wembley this season, although we expected it to be in the play off final, rather than the FA Cup Final.

Now that dream has been achieved in the FA Cup, not quite the FA Cup final, al least not yet, but the semi final against another Manchester club, so the "Yellow & Blue Versus Manchester Who" banner is still relevant for this game.

So it is perhaps the chance to truly celebrate the Spirit of 1976 on Saturday April 26th as not only will it be the nearest date to the 1976 Cup Final out of a possible 3 visits to Wembley on the cards at present, but it might turn out to be our only visit.

So for the Semi Final we have to turn one end of Wembley into the Yellow & Blue Wall !

One of the iconic moments of the FA Cup final in 1976 was when the teams came out, as they did Saints fans released a sea of balloons in both Yellow & Blue, it was spectacular and set the tone for the rest of the game.

In the second half of the match, a guttural chant arose from the Southampton section, it was simple but taken up by every Saints fan, it was slow but effective "Come on you Yellows, Yellows, Yellows, Yellows , slow but repetitive and it grew and grew till the 83rd minute when suddenly the Yellow & Blue army erupted as Bobby Stokes broke through and fired home to win the cup for Southampton FC.

In 2003 at Cardiff we once again found ourselves in the FA Cup Final and again we played in a Yellow & Blue kit and the Stadium saw Saints fans dominate the day with their colourful displays and noise, but it wasn't Wembley.

So now Saturday 25th April give us the chance to replicate the atmosphere just 6 days short of the 50th anniversary.

So every Southampton supporter should try to wear something yellow, when the team come out perhaps a recreation of the balloon barrage and a sea of Yellow,.

The Northam Wall saw us home against Arsenal, now we need the Yellow Wall of Wembley.

If we do this then we will be the 12th man, perhaps on the field the team won't triumph, but they said that in 1976, so you never know, but we want to remember this day in our history, even if it isn't for winning the game, we can still evoke and honour the Spirit of 1976.

Sung to the tune of The Yellow Rose of Texas:
Oh the yellow wall of Wembley, it is a sight to see
And the yellow wall of Wembley beats the blues of Man City.

The sea of yellow and blue is absolutely positive support but can we do it without the balloons?
Traditional and colourful as they are the environmental impact is similar to plastic bags. The shiny helium ones are even worse in the time it takes them to disintegrate, often a long way from their lift off point.
Apologies if anyone feels that I'm a doomscrolling old grump, but I love the deteriorating planet as much as my team and want the best for both.

Tune: Mcnamara's Band (sic Mcmenemy):-

On May 1st in 76, the boys in yellow and blue,
Went up to London Town to show Utd what to do.
When Stokesey hit the back of the net you oughta heard 'em sigh,
And when the final whistle blew, you oughta heard 'em cry:
La lala le la oh Man United
The biggest bunch of (bankers*) in the land.

Man City fans can sing along to this one too.*

Highfield49, it is unlikely that any balloons will escape the confines of Wembley, so by taking balloons we are helping to keep the Wembley cleaners in a job. In these days of austerity it is vital to help all fellow workers.
