Southampton At Swansea City The Preview Friday, 17th Apr 2026 08:46 Before we think of Wembley we have two important Championship fixtures to play, two games that could see us in line for automatic promotion and the first of those is the trip to Swansea City. Not many people would have had Saints as nailed on play off contenders a few weeks ago, but now we travel to Wales knowing that a win there and Wrexham failing to beat Stoke would see a play off spot guaranteed if Derby should also slip up at home to Oxford. Indeed even if the Rams were to win they would only be able to match our 75 points and as it stands now they have a 12 deficit in goal difference to make up. So if we do our job and put Swansea to bed, then we have almost completed yet another step in this amazing journey under Tonda Eckert.
But it could get better, on Sunday Ipswich host Middlesbrough and if they drop points in that game, we could have a shot at Automatic promotion. But Tonda Eckert will be focusing his squad on just one thing, getting our job done and then worrying about what is happening elsewhere. The hope is that the Swans will already be looking at the beach in the summer, they start the day on 57 points, they are out of reach of the play offs, or at least mathematically will be if they fail to beat us and they can't be caught by those in the bottom 3.
However that is not always as easy as it sounds, teams with no pressure on them can go two ways in their remaining games, they can collapse or they can play with the freedom of not having that pressure. Swansea have not been in great form of late, their last 6 games have seen them win 2, draw 2 and lose 2, although they did win last time out, a 1-0 win at almost relegated Leicester City and drew their previous 2 games, so they are on an unbeaten run of their own. But we cannot rely on anything other than ourselves, we have to go out there and do the job we have been doing so well for the last 3 months.
On Tuesday evening Tonda once again rang the changes and kept his side fresh, the one worry though was that Finn Azaz, the man who makes us tick was even on the bench, hopefully he was just being rested, rather than anything serious and certainly in last weekend's win over Derby he looked a little tired. Hopefully the rest has done him good and he will return for this one ready to go. The one thing certain is that the manager will make a change or 2 or 3 or 4 and the good news is that the starting line up is not weakened because of it, every member of the squad is playing for his place, Shea Charles would walk into any other Championship team, but so would Flynn Downes, Finn Azaz & Caspar Jander and that highlights the strength we have.
Ross Stewart is in fine form, but so is Cyle Larin, Tonda Eckert has built into his side not only confidence, but a competitive spirit where it is all for one and one for all ! So there won't be many betting against Saints in this one, but nothing is certain in football and Tonda Eckert will be making sure that his team stays focused on the job in hand, he will be telling them that the game is never over till the final whistle itself and that goes both ways winning or losing or drawing. So another big day for Saints, but then again all of them will be now up to the final ball of the season is kicked.
