Southampton V Bristol City The Preview Tuesday, 21st Apr 2026 08:47 The season is coming to an exciting climax, if Saints can extend their winning run by 3 games, then it could be a very special one, but as Tonda Eckert well knows you have to take every game as it comes. As I write on Tuesday morning, the game against Bristol City is within 300 tickets of a sell out in the home sections, a quick look at the Bristol City official website shows they have just shy of 900 tickets unsold, meaning that the crowd is likely to be under 30,000 if we don't sell those last 300 tickets. But whatever the crowd, it will mean that Saints will have the bulk of the support and we have to turn numbers into decibels. We are three games away from making history, now is not the time to sit on our hands in the stands. Tonda Eckert has already called for the fans to be right behind the team and spur them on and he will be telling his players that now is the time to stand up and perform, that nothing should be left on the pitch.
In truth he has been telling them that for the last 3 months and as they did at Swansea on Saturday, they have responded and responded well, they never give up till the final whistle and neither should the fans, you know with this team, if you leave early you might just miss something exciting. There are those that have been critical of our transfer dealings in the past couple of seasons, but the truth is that since he was appointed manager, Tonda has added just two players to the squad, Cyle Larin & Daniel Peretz, both on loan, if you want to be picky you could add James Bree who returned from his loan at Charlton. The point to be made though, is that it was never really the squad that was the problem over the past 20 months, it was a procession of managers who failed to get the best from the squad they have. The influence that Tonda Eckert has had in such a short time cannot be underestimated, nor can that of Johannes Spors, who has got the transfer strategy back on track with some important signings.
Now we have to go again this evening against Bristol City and take another big step forward, do our job and then hope for a result or two elsewhere to go our way. One thing that we can expect though is a change or two, I would expect Jack Stephens to be restored to the defence after being rested at Swansea and likewise Shea Charles and Cyle Larin.
I also have a sneaky suspicion that Cameron Archer might get a start, he has not played as much as most in the squad and in the last two games has brought a level of freshness to the side. He was instrumental in the win over Blackburn a week ago and came on and scored the winner in Wales on Saturday, so I would not be surprised to see him start.
There is not a lot more to say, we just have to keep on doing what we have been doing and as Tonda Eckert has called for, add the passion of the fans into the mix and we have a very good chance of winning. Bristol City arrive at St Mary's 10th in the table, to be honest not in great form, at the end of February the perhaps harboured hopes of a promotion push, but the last 9 games have seen them win just 2, draw 2 and lose 5. That is just 8 points out of 27 and that run has seen them drop out of the running for the play offs, indeed like Swansea they sit firmly mid table, nothing to play for, but as the Swans showed on Saturday, that doesn't mean you are already on the beach. However they fell apart in their last game, 1-0 up against Norwich at home, they were 4-1 down by the 78th minute and although they pulled a goal back in the 90th minute, it was well short of changing the result which ended in a 4-2 defeat for them. That was against a Norwich side who had pulled themselves out of a relegation battle and again were clearly not resting on their laurels, indeed the Canaries could sneak a play off place if they won their last 3 games and Hull, Wrexham & Derby all lost all three of theirs. Highly unlikely I know, but it shows that this division is very condensed, a couple of sides apart at either end, there is not a lot of difference between the rest.
We now have to show Bristol City that we are one of the few and not one of the many, we need to put them to the sword and then we can cast our eyes to Stoke where we need Millwall to slip up and then Charlton tomorrow night who host Ipswich. Whatever happens in the next few weeks though, no one can complain about the second half of this season, an FA Cup semi final appearance, means we can celebrate the 50th anniversary of our glorious win in 1976, by visiting Wembley and of course this great unbeaten run. But if we truly want to achieve things neither the players or the fans can assume that they can sit back and it will happen unless everyone puts in some effort. That means both on and off the pitch, I know I harp on at this and I appreciate that not everyone can be jumping up and down in the Northam, but everyone can offer a few words of encouragement at crucial stages of a game. Let's make tonight one of those special occasions, both on and off the pitch.
