Southampton 2 v 2 Ipswich Town
EFL Championship

Southampton V Ipswich Town The Verdict
Wednesday, 29th Apr 2026 15:04

Saints ended their battle for automatic promotion in a tough fought game with Ipswich, but the season is far from over and now we lick our wounds and look to continue our quest for 4th place and ultimately promotion through the play offs.

At the end of the game it felt like a loss at St Mary's on Tuesday , but it was far from that and our unbeaten run in the Championship now stands at 18 games and counting.

On reflection this was perhaps a game too far, although we have a strong squad, in recent weeks it has been stretched a little and we went into this game without key players such as Flynn Downes, Jack Stephens & Kuryu Matsuki.

But we put in a performance and after the game exploded to life in the 48th minute when Ipswich took the lead, with the crowd suddenly stirring to life we fought back and took the lead before ultimately Ipswich gained the point that they needed to keep automatic promotion squarely in their own hands on the final day.

We might not have that 2nd place to play for as we travel up to Preston on Saturday, but we could still finish 3rd or more likely 4th and that will be a key advantage in the play off semi finals as we would have home advantage in the second leg.

So there is no time for rest for Tonda Eckert & his men, they have a job to do at Preston and then hope that Wrexham get at least a point at home to Middlesbrough.

The game itself against Ipswich though was pulsating and no one can accuse Saints of not playing a full part, they caught napping a little to concede the first goal, but they rallied and with the crowd finding it's voice only took 10 minutes to get back on level terms, a free kick from Ryan Manning squarely on target, but a deflection helped it past the Ipswich keeper.

Now it was game on and it was Manning the hero again, playing a big part in the second goal, his cross being controlled by Cyle Larin who turned two defender and slotted home with the outside of his right foot to give Saints the lead and hope that automatic promotion might be on the cards.

However the lead would last just 7 minutes and with just 3 minutes left on the clock Ipswich equalised, again you felt that the Saints legs were tired, but the visitors ones desperate as they poured forward trying to keep their season on track.

We were second best to the ball twice in seconds and the 3rd Ipswich touch was to slam it home past Peretz.

You felt at this point that Saints might crumble, but we again drew on inner strength to make sure that we did not lose the game, although at this point you could not see us winning it.

The final whistle saw the mood subdued, most were complaining about the referee who seemed to give us nothing and indeed if there had of been VAR, the Ipswich defender who fouled Finn Azaz for the free kick for our equaliser would have well seen red.

The fans felt that the ref seemed to ignore a series of fouls by the visitors, some more serious than others as the Tractor Boys truly practiced the dark arts of shirt pulling etc.

But we stayed focused and Shea Charles & Caspar Jander, especially Jander ran their socks off .

But as I say, we live to fight another day and with so much packed in to the last 3 weeks it is hard to believe that in that time we had packed in 7 games, one of them being an FA Cup semi final and the other 6 in the league.

Just 3 weeks and 2 hours earlier, we were at Wrexham fearing that defeat would be a terminal blow to our play off chances, but here we were already guaranteed of a play off spot something we would have snatched your hand off if we had been told this pre the Wrexham game.

Some serious heroes have emerged, some obvious, others not quite so.

Perhaps the one man I should highlight though is Ryan Manning, at the start of this season, his reputation amongst Southampton supporters was somewhat similar to that amongst the less charitable of our fanbase, but he has quietly just got on with the job.

He has started 35 games, come on in another 7 and in the other 3 he was an unused sub. overall he has scored 8 goals and added another 6 assists in the Championship, but in the last 5 games he has truly excelled.

There were some who suggested that he might be dropped to give Welington some game time as Manning was going to miss the FA Cup semi through suspension.

There were some that thought Welington should keep his place for this game, after a decent performance at Wembley, but Manning's goal and assist against Ipswich, made it 2 goals and 3 assists in the last 5 League games, he truly played a big part in turning us from also rans into genuine Automatic promotion contenders.

But this game is now done, Tonda Eckert and his men now go again at Preston, they will take and be focused on each game as it comes and so should the Saints supporters.

It was easy to go up to Wembley last Saturday and bask in a glorious day, but now it's back to the bread & butter of the League and we have a job to do at Preston and that is secure the three points that if the luck is with us secure us 3rd place and if not at least 4th.

We get that done and we have an advantage for the play offs and we again have to replicate those glorious 3 games of 2024.

This season is far from over we now need to get ourselves over the finish line.

My view of the game was the players looked tired. That together with missing key players in Stephens, Downes and Matsuki contributed to the team being second best on many challenges and not quick enough to pick up second balls.

This is not a criticism of the players as they have done amazingly well since the new year but as mentioned this was one match too far. I hope Ipswich claim the automatic promotion spot as they were a strong side and wouldn’t want them in the playoffs (semi or final).

It was always going to be a massive ask to win this game, but we again came back from a goal down to take the lead.

Ipswich had everything to play for at 2-1 down, and they are a strong team, and their equaliser was one of those where the ball was bouncing all over the box, it wasn't easy to get it under control and it fell nicely to Jack Clarke.

For me, it's likely that we would have been tighter at the back had Stephens been playing.

I think we need a strong performance at Deepdale, if only to get back a bit of the relentless dominance that took us into the play offs in the first place.

Both sides looked quite tired—especially in the final twenty minutes, when the game was particularly wide open.

An intriguing side note: Here in the US, on Paramount+, somehow we were treated to Ian Darke's commentating. For the most part, he did well to suppress his Pompey-supporting self—until Ipswich's equalizer, about which he got a bit exuberant. For that one brief moment it felt as if we were facing TWO opponents. :-)

The dream ennded quite abruptly but what a glorious 18 games it has been If you haven't enjoyed it then you are probably doing something wrong.
Now on to the "Promotion Cup" We've been there before and if you are successful it is the most exciting way to get promoted.Whilst having the second leg at home is an advantage remember Coventry and Wrexham away results.I am confident that we can return to Wembley against any of the teams we are likely to meet

Ipswich should have finished with 10 men if the referee had done his job but yet again the officials failed. We did look leggy but hopefully can recover for Saturday. For the playoffs we will have Flynn Downes back but there's anyone know what the situation is regarding Stephens ?

Jander incredible game again and 3 days after his motm performance against Man Cheaty.
Manning looked good for not playing on Saturday, the rest helping his energy levels massively.
Latin immense effort and great goal.
We have 1 major problem defensively now, it used to be 2 but we have improved a lot with stopping the crosses coming in. This major problem is our failure to close down men on the edge of our own box. Even going back to Russell Martin at home to Ipswich we conceded a last minute equaliser in the Prem because we didn’t get out quick enough and Aribo pussied out turning his back.
On Saturday we conceded a winner the same way and the Clarke equaliser last night showed nobody getting out quick enough or throwing their body in front. This maybe a little harsh but I am sure that teams have picked up on this flaw in our game and exploit it, it cost us 2 points last night and it has to stop. My only criticism of THB and the keeper last night was their lack of shouting to get out. Ipswich are the only team I fear in play offs so hopefully they win on Saturday too, they are the best side out of the rest of them.

Jander again was another level, just like his performance vs City. The amount of times he turns the ball over and wins it back for us is redicious.

Larins goal was brilliant. And how did that Azaz shot not go in. His control of the ball was stellar and, I've watched that now a dozen times and each time I'm convinced it's going to be a goal when it leaves his foot.

I felt it was another good against a top Championship team and off the back of Wembley, the players put in a real shift, again. We just tired in the last 15, but that's understandable.

I'd rest a couple at Preston. I'd like to see Bragg start on Saturday. And we have Downes to come back, Matsuki as well.

Oh, and Peretz save at the end !

It was a really good game.

I think the only minor criticism I would have is that when we went 2-1 up we should have strengthened defensively with subs eg Bragg on, as there were players who had given all to come back from a goal down to take the lead who were spent. But still very happy with how things are going.

As a big club we can claim there are too many games 😄. The lads have done brilliantly and are not surprisingly feeling the pinch. Tired legs = tired brains and that showed on Tuesday. At least they have a small break before the weekend. What a brilliant 3 or 4 months.

On a separate note Manning has been a transformed player since Martin left and plays with freedom which has made him such an effective player.

Understandably the energy levels, of both teams, were drained.

At the match I was outraged by the tackle on Azaz which not only looked late but also two footed. So much so that I had to look again on the tv recording and was gutted to see that the referee probably got his decision correct, just. However, there was too much leniency with Ipswich fouls on and off the ball. Maybe just as well that Downes wasn't able to play because I think he might have been drawn into confrontation and not finished the match.

As per previous comments, Jander makes me exhausted just watching him. What a work rate, and his ball recovery is outstanding. What a talent, I hope we have him in the team next season alongside every one of the squad heroes.

Agreed, the end of the game felt a bit flat despite keeping the unbeaten run on track. For me the strangest thing was the players being unsure about how to respond to the last home regular season match and knowing that there's a playoff game on the horizon. I was almost convinced that Peretz giving out gloves and shirt to supporters was a farewell gesture. Hopefully not, like so many others, he's been a revelation of a potentially great future team.

Unfortunately another game where the biasness of the ref dictated the game . Too many of ipswich fouls went unpunished. Our players were getting pulled and kicked all over the pitch.. similar to the Bristol city match . Yet when our players breathe on theirs its a foul . ..the booing at halftime especially was directed at the referee.

However good atmosphere, exciting to be in the playoffs and will take that considering where we were a few weeks ago ,hoping to scrape 6thplace .

Still unbeatable which is amazing (apart from city in the cup )
