Southampton V Middlesbrough The Play Off Verdict
Wednesday, 13th May 2026 08:59

The run up to this game was not about football, but at 8pm on Tuesday night the talking stopped and all eyes were on the pitch, many expected an easy night for Saints, but it turned out far from that.

At 6pm the fans swarmed in their thousands to the front of the Itchen stand to welcome the Southampton team coach, two years ago it was a glorious spectacle, but those who attended coming back into the fanzones, spoke of how it lacked a little something from the 2024 version.

That seemed to transport itself into the stadium at 8pm, the Saints fans seemed content to sit back and watch their team over run Middlesbrough, however it did not work out quite like that and as much as the team struggled to get going, so did the fans.

Whilst certain areas such as the Northam & the group in the Itchen next to the away fans made some noise, around me in the Kingsland and other areas, many sat firmly in their seats saying nothing, the theme song for the evening in the home stands could have been summed up by Nirvana "Here we are entertain us"

But there was a big shock after only 5 minutes when Riley McGree fired home into the bottom corner to give Boro the lead in both the match and the tie.

The game now fell into a familiar pattern, Boro defending and looking dangerous when they broke Saints struggling to break them down, they had a resolve and their fans roared them on.

It looked like they might hold their lead at the break, but in the first minute of injury time a Ryan Manning shot was saved by the keeper, but he could only palm it upwards and there was Ross Stewart at the far post to head home the equaliser.

Saints started to get their game together in the second half, but they found it hard to break down a resolute Boro rear guard and when they did they found the keeper in good form, so it was no surprise when it went to extra time.

The extra period seemed to be heading to penalties as it headed into the 116th minute, Shea Charles was out on the far right side of the field near the touchline and he put in a cross.

To be fair it was a clever cross, put the ball across the goal and hope that someone gets on the end of it, no Saints player got near it, a Boro defender did, but he seemed convinced it was drifting harmlessly for a goal kick and ducked his head and let it carry on it's way.

That seemed to convince the keeper who stayed rooted on the spot as they both watched it curl into the far corner to send Southampton fans wild.

Manic celebrations took place and it was a good 3 minutes before the game restarted, so it was no surprise that the referee announced 5 minutes on injury time, we just had to hold out now.

Hold out we did despite more time added to those 5 minutes to spark more wild celebrations as it sank in we were at Wembley for the second time in the season.

The truth though was it felt a little flat, I have been critical of sections of the crowd earlier in this article, I wasn't expecting the entire ground to be stood up and jumping up and down singing, but this was a big big game and too many just sat and watched it, they might as well have stayed at home and watched it on TV.

Too many said absolutely nothing in support of the team when they needed it, the celebrations to me felt a little muted, it wasn't like the Arsenal game a month or so again, when the entire ground roared the team on, the FA Cup semi final or even the West Brom game two years ago.

As Nirvana sang "Here we are entertain us" and when you have done that we will cheer.

The truth was the team looked tired and so did the crowd, April saw a lot of games and a lot of energy used, both crowd and team were running on empty.

Thankfully despite the fact that we looked nowhere near the free flowing exciting side of a month ago, we dug in and got the rewards at the end.

I can't think of a man of the match, no one was outstanding, it wasn't about great play, it was about sheer battling, gritting our teeth, rolling up our sleeves and grafting and that we did.

It was about the unsung heroes of the side , this wasn't about Leo Scienza, it was about James Bree, Ryan Manning & Nathan Wood, digging in and doing their job.

So now it is off to Wembley and we certainly need the 11 day break before we get there.

However there is still the war of words going on between the two clubs and that sadly will take up most of the headlines in the next week or so.

I didn't see (or hear) it that way. Thought the atmosphere was terrific last night - plenty of singing and noise - even in centre Kingsland. After Middlesborough dominated the first 20 minutes or so, Saints ended up retaining much more possession. Very little sideways passing, as we we keen to get the ball up the field much more quickly.

Also agree that it was a great and loud atmosphere everywhere, as Dirk has pointed out elsewhere other fans read these match reports, this just does us a massive disservice which we could particularly do without with spygate getting way too much publicity.

Nick you can't think of a man of the match.
I can.
Casper Jander was a srand out performer as he has been in recent weeks.
He is my unsung hero.

I took think you are being over critical. The atmosphere was great. Whenever we struggled a bit the crowd really got behind us. I thought it was equally as good as the WBA and Arsenal games. I also think you underplay the performance. We were definitely the dominant side and played well.

The support last night was superb, both before and during the match. It really helped get the team over the line.

Hi. I listened on the wireless and could hear the fans loud and clear.

Maybe the Spygate issue did have an effect on some as I think we are all a little anxious about it. Hopefully, this can be sorted out soon and it is a limited one off event in which we pay a fine.

It sounded loud on the TV and the sky pundits mentioned the noise.

Agree with previous comments on the crowd support. Maybe it’s just in the section you sit in?

Putting spygate to one side, this was a proper “cup” tie with both teams going for it. Ultimately the best team did win. Boro were not really an attacking force in the second half and only really threatened in the final 5 mins once behind.

We will see what comes next both in terms of spygate and also the “discriminatory comments” from THB to Ayling. It seemed like a storm in a tea cup as both were chatting and smiling at each other later in the game.

A churlish report. I never heard the Boro supporters, but they have my sympathy for what must have been a bitter long and late journey home. There was good Saints support but not surprisingly it all has a tinge of apprehension around it at the moment. Insidious speculation from the media and Boro are all stoking this up - we are being 'cancelled'.

Obviously a great match last probably had every possible Incident within it that could happen in a match. No question in my mind Casper was MOTM by a country mile.Even if we go up I can see him being enticed away by a top six club.

I can't not make a comment about "spygate". Lets have a bit of perspective the club is facing a potential £200mm loss if we are thrown out of the play offs. Now think about Chelsea make millions of pounds of illegal payments to players/agents. Effectively steal 3 Premier league titles and get a £10 million fine years later.

Not much more to be said really haven't even bought Man City into the discussion.

I see a few other people feel James Bree MOTM not a bad call either. Think we were lucky to employ Europes top coach for a time who bought him to our club.

Incredible, Shea Charles is a lucky charm. Deserved victory against an odd backdrop.

Jander has been incredible including his energy and breaking up play. In terms of creativity manning was probably my motm, he's been superb since he's let of the leash.

Let's hope the most saints get is a fine as a result of the spying stuff but if the club gave the go ahead for this nonsense to happen as ever it'll be the fans who suffer most

I disagree Nick. I couldn’t get to the game but watched on TV and our fans were very loud and theirs were not!

Under the circumstances it’d be understandable for some fans to feel apprehensive. Boro have gone off the rails after weeks at the top and this second chance ticket is only like to be a success if they can get media traction and some ‘valuable input’ from some holier than thou pundits. Then it’s down to a call from a bunch of randoms on a panel.

Hellberg has gone down massively in my estimations. From laughing off the accusations to basically blaming us for the shortcomings of their season. On the night they were beaten by the better team and no spying was required. We’d have beaten them at their place too without all the hype. They played on that and didn’t capitalise. I’m not advocating cheating but it has to be contextualised.

Back to the game, thought we played well and controlled the match against a decent team. Standouts for me were Jander and Manning.

Is this some kind of rage bait? The whole place was rocking . Plenty of noise and support and its been a long time since fans in the itchen have been next to away fans nick

Nerve-shredding nights like that are why we follow football. Masochistic experiences in many ways but wonderful when it comes good.

I respect the fact that Nick, and all of us to be honest, would prefer to concentrate on the game but I know I'm less exuberant than I should be today because of so-called spygate. In this day and age he who controls the narrative sets the agenda and Mboro have taken TOTAL control of this one. In the Saints' 'holding' statements there has been no attempt at all to set out a few obvious facts totally lost in the media frenzy:

1. Innocent until proven guilty - the inquiry is there to first decide on that. Saints have been charged, not convicted.

2. If Saints are found guilty then there are a RANGE of sanctions. How can Hellgate or whatever his name is call for the maximum sentence when the due process has barely begun. If we are guilty then yes, we should be sanctioned - but to be thrown out would suggest the very highest level of guilt. If that is proven then fair enough but if it was, say, a lone wolf, and was not known about by the wider club (one of the more likely scenarios I would think) then its ridiculous to call for the severest penalty.

3. There is a due process. The rules say Saints have 14 days to respond - if that is shortened then the rules are being broken and that invalidates the whole thing. If you get a parking fine and you are given 14 days to appeal and they then double the fine after 7 days then you go to COURT to have it overturned. NB 14 days expires the day before the final - if Saints are kicked out in a hurry then they will go to court. I know football regulations are not laws as such but you tell that to Man City's lawyers.

4. Hellgate should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute for the way he has behaved over this. Mboro, cleverly in my view, exploited this for motivational purposes but they should shut the feck up now. It's not for them to decide guilt and punishment.

None of this excuses those that are responsible for this debacle. The one fact we almost certainly know is that someone from Saints was up there - so a guilty verdict is probable I would say. If we were Man City or Chelsea we would get a slap on the wrist but as we're not then who knows. Despite all Mboro's whining 'spygate' had no effect on the result. If they'd taken just a couple of their many chances in the first half of the first leg they would have won - they didn't and they lost.

Sorry for the long post but Saints need to do more to seize the narrative on this. No point quietly following the proper process if you are being hung, drawn and quartered by the mob.

I sit in a normally quiet part of SMS but last night I and a large proportion around me sang, shouted and screamed all through that match To the extent that this morning I can hardly speak
A word about the ref They are often much maligned but both teams, both dug outs gave him a very difficult game to control He could have handed out reds on 3 or 4 occasions but chose not to.Tonda took a poke at Hellberg who had obviously made a nasty comment but the ref just gave them a good talking to Well done

SanMarco, you and I usually agree on most things Saints but not completely so this time I’m afraid.

I think the holding statement from Parsons ( no doubt recommended by the Club’s Lawyers ) was the correct thing to do simply because it has bought us time..

After yesterday’s defeat of Middlesbrough most sensible people will increasingly regard any further Middlesbrough moaning as sour grapes and in a few days time the whole media circus will move on.

Your other opinions expressed in points 1.to 4. I fully concur with however.

Middlesbrough spent more time in the top 2 than any other club. Middlesbrough were top 2 when Hellgate took over. Middlesbrough finished 5th!
Hellgate messed up and trying to cover up being a flop.

Hi saintmark1976 - good point. You may well be right on that. I suppose I am just worried that the narrative is being set by others. Let's hope the lawyers know what they are doing!!

It was a different atmosphere to West Brom in 2024, but the circumstances were entirely different due to the spying charge and tension in the tie. But the atmosphere was brilliant last night. The game was tight but Saints fully deserved to edge it. We played better on the balance of it last night.

Jander was excellent and Motm for me, but THB (again), Manning, Charles, all very good. Both Stewart and Larin kept the Boro defence keen all night and Azaz grew into the game. Flynn Downes was immense when he got on and in the end it was Saints strength and depth that beat Boro.
