Southampton Get Death Sentence For Shoplifting
Wednesday, 20th May 2026 11:13

That is one description I have read in the media regarding the penalty imposed by the Independent panel that imposed the penalty.

When Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa were caught spying in 2018/19 they were fined £200,000 for doing the offence for the whole season, no points deductions & no bans.

They were caught at a similar time that we admitted spying on Oxford United, so had we been caught that day, you have to presume that the penalty would have been something similar with extra built in for inflation so to speak.

But we weren't caught in December, we were caught in May and that means that the stakes were far higher, however Leeds were involved in the automatic promotion battle almost to the final day and finished 3rd.

At the time of the offences emerging they were in top spot, they lost in the play off semi finals on aggregate to Derby.

That meant that the punishment fitted the offence and in fact it was probably a bit soft on Leeds, however it set the precedent.

But Saints did this ahead of a play off semi final, so it seems that the punishment fits the importance of the game, not the actual offence itself.

To put the headline quote into perspective, it is the equivalent of getting caught stealing a packet of crisps in the Knightsbridge branch of Tesco Extra and you get a warning from the police if they indeed bother turning up.

Do it 50 yards away across the road in Harrods, they not only turn up, they arrest you, rough you up in the van and haul you up in court where you get life imprisonment ( Obviously they cant get the death sentence here, perhaps I should have used Texas as an example.)

I am not trying to justify the offences, Southampton FC seem to have admitted them, co-operated and put themselves at the mercy of the independent panel.

Unfortunately they got Judge Jeffries !

The offence is cheating, we cheated I have no problem with that, I watched Middlesbrough's defenders continually grasp Cyle Larin's shirt taking it around 12 inches from his back up at The Riverside two weeks ago, I know cheating when I see it.

All Southampton ask is that the punishment should fit the crime, if they had been caught in January there would have been a big fine, if they had been caught against Oxford at home in April they would still probably have got a big fine.

But it didn't happen then and the game was more important.

But penalty should be about the offence itself, not the game that it happens in.

I would say we will not win the appeal, that would make the EFL look completely incompetent.

The best that we will get here is that the 4 point deduction will be removed, however I do not think that this will be the end of the matter.

I think most of us supporters feel let down, humiliated and despondent.
As yet we have no transcript of the enquiry but, particularly if the club representatives mitigation included admission of two additional offences concerning matches we didn't win, the whole saga is still a reputational shambles.
No matter which members of the squad, management, coaches etc leave the club they are all tainted. Players will be taunted by chanting of "cheat" every time they touch the ball, background staff will struggle to get jobs elsewhere and the coaches involved will mostly become sporting pariahs.
It is probably an overreaction, due to my current disappointment, but I wouldn't be bothered if the club was rebranded because the history is so horribly tarnished. However, knee jerk reactions often bring regret down the line.
In the bigger world picture, the entire sordid event will be mostly forgotten in the years ahead. Like watergate, partygate and every other media tagged "gate" the memories fade because bigger events gather focus. People will remember spygate but another club will be scrutinised for dronegate, annualaccountsgate, offshorefundsgate or whatever lurks in the future.
Tonda and many others, if complicit, cannot continue as employees. The players, whilst only obeying orders, were probably aware during pre match briefings and coaching sessions that the tactical plans for the opposition were unusually refined. And now, sadly, I realise that the great season turnaround was built not on tactical genius or improved coaching but more likely on a form of cheating.
All very sad, indeed.

we were given the points deduction as well so that when we appeal we can be given that back so they are seen to be fair.

i think that Middlesbrough should also be thrown out of the competition for un-sportsman like behavior.

1, if they did get William Salts details from a receipt then this could constitute a breach of GDPR rules and therefore they should be in trouble for that. this is not a criminal matter and therefore no one should have provided the receipt or details.

2, the way that Middlesbrough boss and club have lied continuously to make it sound worse than it was - sophisticated recording equipment (an old mobile phone🤣) - hiding in the bushes (stood by a gate under a tree on public property) - accused of running into the club house and changing (not sure that this happened from what i have been told) - managers and staff demanding the punishment (this is for the independent panel to decide) - the distance away from the pitch and what he actually saw. i have heard reports of them being anything from 200m away up to nearly half a mile away.

i think that it was already a forgone conclusion that we were to be thrown out of the competition, from all the noise from the Middlesbrough team. had they not been shouting for us to be disqualified, would the commission have even thought about that, or would they just have imposed a big fine and a recommendation for the points deductions next year in the Premier league had we been successful?

than to add to this crazy situation the big white elephant in the room (Man City's 115 breaches) how dose this look fair..... can we now go back and ask that we contest the FA cup final as they should be kicked out for more cheating and rule breaches than we have done???? what about all the other teams that have cheated on Financials - Leicester, Man City, Chelsea etc etc. this list goes on. yet for a mobile phone recording we are loosing everything....

@sledger i think that you are spot on there. they added the points deduction so that they could take that away on appeal and say "look we reduced the punishment". dont worry that Sheffield Wednesday will start next year with 0 points deductions when they should have started with -15. this just makes a mockery of the whole situation.

not sure how many of you have seen the videos of people auditing the police and other establishments. but maybe we should start off our own auditing of our opponents football clubs starting with Middlesbrough, we could all arrange to go up there on mass with our little camera drones and start filming sessions whilst wearing our beloved saints shirts 🤣🤣🤣🤣

why are we not fighting back with the next rule down in the book?

3.5 No Club, either by itself, its servants or agents, shall by any means whatsoever unfairly
criticise, disparage, belittle or discredit any other Club or The League or in either case
any of its directors, officers, employees or agents.

surly Helburgs actions and that of their staff, director and media outlet have failed in this by demanding our expulsion?

When Marcelo Bielsa admitted to spying on every single opponent during the 2018–19 season, the EFL explicitly ruled that it did not alter the sporting integrity of the league results enough to justify a points deduction or disqualification. Instead, they issued a fine. Surely we use their own ruling against them?

100% with you on Rule 3.5 dowater
This whole thing stinks and is entirely wrong. Its been rushed through by flaccid drones in the EFL like servile little minions to the media.
Whilst ignoring the inconsistencies and on display corruption not punished in so many other clubs.
Our club and its fans willingness to see us punished has been interpreted as a weak position. And we have appropriately been battered for the pathetic, self emasculating muppets that we have been shown to be

English football is becoming a laugh stock, its losing its 'reputation' as the best in the world. The Premier League with the handling ( or not ) of the Man City allegations - what is now three years?
And now the EFL with this fiasco, disregarding their own rules ( 14 day reply) , Appeal heard within 24 hours and not 14 days. The changing of the kick-off times depending on the teams. How do they look if we get re-instated? completely incompetent. The issue should have been dealt with all in one go, then this pantomine can end.
