Southampton Issue Club Statement On Their Position
Wednesday, 20th May 2026 15:34

Saints supporters have been disgruntled by the wall of silence from St Mary's, I would assume that the main reason behind it was due to legalities as well as not wanting to adversely affect the outcome of the Independent Panel and subsequent appeal.

For the benefit of any Southampton supporter who has not read the statement since it was published, I put it out here for their information.

A statement from Phil Parsons, Chief Executive, Southampton Football Club:

We have appealed yesterday's decision by the Independent Disciplinary Commission to expel Southampton Football Club from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs, and to impose a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season.

Before turning to that appeal, I want to address our supporters, our players, and the wider football community directly and without equivocation.

What happened was wrong. The club has admitted breaches of EFL Regulations 3.4 and 127. We are sorry to the other clubs involved, and most of all to the Southampton supporters whose extraordinary loyalty and support this season deserved better from the club.

We have provided our full co-operation to the EFL's investigation and disciplinary process. Following the appeal, we will also be writing to the EFL to volunteer our participation in a working group on the practical application and enforcement of Regulation 127 across the Championship. Contrition without change is hollow, and we intend to demonstrate change.

On the appeal itself: we accept that there should be a sanction. What we cannot accept is a sanction which bears no proportion to the offence.

Whereas Leeds United was fined £200,000 for a similar offence, Southampton has been denied the opportunity to compete in a game worth more than £200 million and one which means so much to our staff, players and supporters.

We believe the financial consequence of yesterday's ruling makes it, by a very considerable distance, the largest penalty ever imposed on an English football club.

Luton Town's 30-point deduction in 2008/09 — to date the most severe sporting sanction in the English game — was levied against a club already in League Two, with no comparable revenue at stake.

Derby County's 21-point deduction in 2021 cost them their Championship status.

Everton's eventual six-point deduction in 2023/24 followed losses of £124.5 million, a figure dwarfed by what has been taken from Southampton in a single afternoon.

The largest financial penalty ever levied by the Premier League, against Chelsea in March of this year, was £10.75 million, and was accompanied by no sporting sanction whatsoever despite involving £47.5 million in undisclosed payments over seven years.

We say this not to minimise what occurred at this club, which we have accepted was wrong. We say it because proportionality is itself a principle of natural justice.

The Commission was entitled to impose a sanction. It was not, we will argue, entitled to impose one that is manifestly disproportionate to every previous sanction in the history of the English game.

Our appeal will be heard today, and we will provide a further update in due course.

Nice communication but should have been putting all this out in the press last week. Manage expectations if the penalty and counteract the one way influencing from Boro.

The "crime" itself (if it can be called that ), goes against the EFL rules and deserves to be " punished (if that's the correct word) but the EFL judgement is totally disproportionate to the "offence". The EFL expects teams to be " fair and honest ", and claim that "it's just not cricket" (which thankfully) -it's not.
The rule states that teams should not be "spied on " in the last 72 hours before a game ..suggests EFL they know darn well that such antics are endemic in the game. The fact that the lad (who allegedly got the goods) on Boro' didn't know what day of the week it was, does nothing to denigrate the practice of "spying," which they seem to think takes place only once every 6 years (!).

Despite the obvious " guilt "in the situation, Saints attempted to leave the matter until the enquiry, whereas Boro' went out to the media / social media stoking up their case in some sort of "kangeroo court" with outrageous statements coming from all and sundry, including some who carry some sort of ancient grudge against the club.

Not much has (predictably) come from Tonda Eckert (only at the club since last summer) as to his role in the "spying" which (not unsurprisingly) appears to be endemic on the Continent and regarded as a part of the pre-match preparation. Despite his success in guiding the team from the drop zone to a play-off slot, I fear his days may be numbered, but he will likely get many offers from clubs back in his home country.
Regardless of the outcome, I fear that many people will continue to refer to" spying " as part of our successful strategy, instead of seeing that results were the outcome of many good displays, from some talented footballers who didn't win by pics. from an I-phone.

Any truth in the rumour that Boro were waiting for Salt after being tipped off by a disgruntled ex employer who also used to work at Boro and ran to Gibson to warn him? Suggestions are that they were waiting with expert recording equipment better than he had.
Is this not entrapment and if this guy Taylor had informed Gibson of our ‘habits’ then surely it was Gibsons responsibility to immediately notify the EFL? I bet he told their COO who is the the EFL board, which is a ridiculous conflict of interests

This has nothing to do with punishing Southampton for their misdemeanours, this is all about trying to get Middlesbrough into the premier league, this has now become obvious, from the behaviour of Boro, the entrapment, the keeping the info from the EFL and of course this COO who is on the board of the EFL since 2021..
I think this has been engineered by Boro and the conflict of interests for their gain with the knowledge this guy Salt would turn up. Reeled in.. but also not in good faith.
Boro officials need to be investigated along with those EFL board member from Boro.

There has been a lot of calls for Tonda Eckert to be sacked. Can we just take a minute to think about this. Eckert has proven he is a good manager. I can give him the benefit of the doubt about knowing the rule about watching opponents before a match. It is not an offence in Germany and I believe other continental countries as well. If we sack him he will walk into another club in Germany and it will have no affect on him. We will lose a proven manager and probably end up with a poor replacement. I say give him a chance to make amends.

I agree with Oldmatelot. We have finally found an exceptional manager (after Still and Jones!). We will take flack next season, but give him the chance to prove what a manager he is, and we might just be able to keep Jander, Scienza, Charles, HB etc.

I Also agree with Oldmatelot. lets let the hurt and the anger subside and then look at the situation and make a sensible call on Tonda's future. we have had some great success and all loved the football of late. do we really want SR to appoint another up and coming manager thats going to drag our club down even further, or do we want someone proven to lead us to the championship title.

i can admit for one that i have done wrong in the past and made mistakes. lets allow this guy a chance to make amends and prove to us that he is worth the chance and lead us to promotion.

he's already taken over a club in turmoil, healed a dressing room that was hurt and broken and united the team together.

as the good book says. "he without sin can cast the first stone." well that me out (stone put down).
