A Thank You To Tonda Eckert
Wednesday, 27th May 2026 08:38

Whatever your feelings about Spygate, the truth of the matter is that without Tonda Eckert coming in and turning what was turning into a disastrous season around, the situation would not have happened and didn't he give us an exciting time in doing so.

I have made my thoughts clear on Tonda Eckert, I do not want to see him leave Southampton Football Club, that may be out of the club's hands, the next few weeks will be interesting, but in the meantime surely every Southampton supporter is grateful for the way that he turned our season around.

Under Will Still we were slowly sliding down the table and lacked direction, leadership & identity, at the time I stuck to my guns that we had a squad that was capable of promotion and that we had bought well in the transfer window, it was just not clicking.

When Tonda Eckert was given the job of replacing Still, everyone just assumed that this would just be a temporary measure whilst we considered the full time replacement, but after winning at Queens Park Rangers in his first game, he followed it up with another 3 straight victories and people were taking notice.

The German who most Saints fans had barely heard of was suddenly a contender !

After winning 6 out of his first 7 games he was now permanent boss and there were many who still were sceptical and demanded an experienced older and name manager rather than someone who had never been the manager of a senior level side.

The month between mid December and mid January seemed to fuel that feeling in the more panic prone members of our fanbase, 3 draws, 3 defeat and no wins in 6 League games and changes were being demanded, but after beating Sheffield United on 21st January we would not lose another game in either the Championship or play offs and our only defeat at all was to Premier League giants Manchester City.

Of course the season would end in controversy and the who will be in charge of the team come August is uncertain, but perhaps now is the time for Saints supporters to sit back and take a minute to reflect on the season and what Tonda Eckert has done for this club in such a short time.

Perhaps he was a little rash in the Spying issues, but we would not have even been in the position to be doing so without his meticulous methods in the previous 6 1/2 months before Spygate reared its ugly head.

But what a 6 1/2 months that was, what a job Tonda did, he turned a team of headless chickens being run by someone out of their depth, into the best team in the Championship bar none since January.

He did that with steely determination and methodical planning in all areas, he had an aura about him, you could see just by looking at him that he had something about him that only the top managers had.

It was that meticulous planning that ultimately proved our undoing come the final week of the season, I like many would say that the punishment did not fit the level of the crime, the EFL seems to be the only club that makes spying on other clubs a crime and in the Premier League and across Europe, Eckert would not be seen as a cheat, but as one of the most thorough and meticulous up and coming coaches.

Personally I do not want to lose that, I want to see him stay at St Mary's and carry on the good work, obviously without the spying.

Now there is talk of the FA getting involved and banning Eckert, I am not sure of the legalities of that, I would see this as an EFL rule, not an FA one, if Arne Slot did it, then it would not be an offence as it is not illegal in the Premier League.

If Liverpool got caught for spying, then the Premier League would take no action as no rule had been broken and I presume that neither would the FA, why would they no rules have been breached

So how can the FA have a two tiered justice system, Eckert has not breached the rules of the game as set by FIFA, UEFA or the FA, he has broken an EFL regulation, the matter ends with the EFL as I see it.

That being the case Southampton FC have to stand by their man and so do Southampton supporters, whilst we might not condone this rule breach, we have to put it in perspective and we have already been given the Death Penalty for Shoplifting in relative terms. So we have punished enough and we don't want to increase that by sacking the most promising manager we have had in a long time.

We are a football club not a society concerned with upholding the morals of society, if we want to compete with other football clubs at the level we desire, then we have to accept that football is now a dirty corrupt game and that cheating seems to be rife in all aspects of it.

We have broken some rules as a football club and I would hazard a guess that most supporters of Saints break some sort of rule on a weekly if not daily basis, yet don't have a problem with it, whether it's speeding, parking on a yellow line or some other misdemeanour.

Yes it's not the same. but what is the rule broken that may have the most consequences, a young lad in a field with an I phone on Teeside or someone doing 55 miles an hour in a 30 mile limit in Millbrook, I know what the parent of the child he hits would say about that.

So thank you Tonda Eckert for all you have done for this football club, you have given us back our pride and now we have to show pride and that we are proud of you and we are proud of the football club and we are proud of Tonda Eckert.

We are proud of the fact that we are not Manchester City or Chelsea or a host of other football clubs who constantly break rules with the arrogance that comes from being able to afford to pay lawyers to let them be seen by the rest of us to get away with it.

We have to show the spirit of Southampton itself, that we are a family and when a member of a family does something wrong it closes ranks, especially when justice is not served.

I’m certainly not going to thank him.

If we appointed an experienced manager over Tonda I’m pretty sure we would have got to the play-offs with the squad we had without breaking the rules.

Tonda is an idiot who has caused a lot of damage to the football club.

Tonda is the best manager we've had for many years. Let's hope we can keep him and extend our 21-match unbeaten run in league.

Is this article a joke? "Gave us our pride back"?!!! He certainly did... until his lackey got caught behind a tree enacting out a scene from Carry on Spying.

Keep him! Let those in the EFL and FA who have never sinned cast the first stone. Of course, wouldn't it be very interesting if those very stone-casters were not squeaky clean themselves? Cometh the hour, cometh Sherlock Holmes (hopefully)!

Thanks again Nick Your passion is remarkable
I'm happy for him to continue but fear the FA will take it out of our hands
There is no doubt he breached the rules. He has been punished for that so surely a good lawyer could claim double jeopardy.
More importantly though are the players opinions They are obviously sorry for themselves and for us So far only Sam Edozie has said he want the challenge this will bring
Will a potential purchaser think our players were only good because of illegally obtained info?If they play anywhere they will carry the "cheat"label so stay together at Saints

Totally behind keeping Tonda and some great articles over the last few days Nick. For me, who had 50 years experience in business including years at Vosper Thornycroft, the biggest concern is that our CEO, PR team and legal team (assuming we have one) seems leagues out of their depth: they need to be rapidly revamped or reinforced otherwise I fear what will result!

A good article. The moral high ground is densely populated with those who choose to grade cheating. Many seem to consider our crime far worse than it actually was. If we are honest every manager at every pro club cheats in every game. That is unless they actively do something to stop their players diving, feigning injuries, pulling shirts, targeting the opposition star players for rough treatment etc. It is all cheating so not stopping it means it is condoned.
The punishment dished out to us was ridiculous and we won our semi final over two legs fair and square as we gained little from the spying. Maybe a better punishment would have been the points deduction, a hefty fine and a suspended sentence that we would be relegated from our division if caught spying in future. This would have stopped us and sent out a message to other clubs.
We were very harshly dealt with on this as agreed by very many sensible people in the world of football and beyond.

Sorry Nick check your facts:

The Premier League does not have an explicit, dedicated "no spying" rule, but such behaviour is strictly prohibited and heavily penalised under its broader "utmost good faith" regulations

“…While the Premier League lacks a clause specifically mentioning espionage, any club caught spying would be charged under Rule B.16 of the Premier League Handbook, which mandates that all member clubs conduct themselves with the "utmost good faith, honesty, and professional behaviour" toward one another…” courtesy Lewis Silkin lawyers.

Sadly the FA can over rule the EFL and take things further.

Yes, the English Football Association (FA) can overrule the English Football League (EFL). As the ultimate governing body of association football in England, the FA has the supreme regulatory authority over all domestic leagues and competitions, including the EFL.FA's Governance PowerUltimate Authority: The EFL is a self-governing organization, but its operations and rules remain entirely subject to the FA’s sanctions and approval.Rule Veto: The FA has the power to veto any rule changes made by the professional leagues and can mandate that competitions comply with broader national or international (FIFA/UEFA) regulations.Dispute Resolution: In instances where clubs or leagues are in serious breach of conduct, the FA acts as the highest appellate body in the country's football dispute system.

Leeds kept Bielsabub and then got promoted the following season ( proof that spying was a waste of time). I agree with you on this Nick, but the fans hurt runs deep, and most wont agree, but we all want success at the club and Tonda is the best shot we have this.

I back Tonda.

I enjoyed the Championship more than the premier league anyway. My only true sadness is the fact we will lose some brilliant players and the fact we had the real spine of a team that could stay up and compete next season.

Without Tonda, the points deduction and loss of players we could become a bang average team in the Championship for years and get into financial trouble - so keeping Tonda gives me a bit of confidence we can push for promotion again next year.

I also don't mind being the team people hate next year. With Tonda as manager it would taste all the sweeter to go and get promoted again with everyone against us and could create a siege type mentality. And in the premier league clubs will not care as much about Spygate when we get promoted.

As well as Tonda, one key player is so important for me - Peretz. We should do everything in our power to try and keep him.

Was it a mistake to spy? Yes. Was it carried out in the most stupid of ways? Yes. Do those things have anything to do with enjoying the football over the last 6 months? No.

Keep Tonda.

Don't want to spoil anyone's fun but I have just had a conversation with a friend who does security at Staplewood He believes that Echert and Spors have already gone
Their offices are clear of all personal stuff just company laptops and car keys on the desk

ElSanto is bang on. calm and common-sense.

When things go wrong as they certainly did, panic and annoyance quickly take over.

Enjoy the Summer and hope we can keep Tonda.

The game has never been squeaky clean. In 70 years watching football from non-league to Premiership, there have been many times hen I have raised my eyebrows at goings-on.

Tonda has proved himself to be a good manager and hopefully will stay. Those wishing to get rid of him should be careful what they wish for. ...

Thanks for the good article, Nick

Bowlercraft I'm not saying I don't believe you but your pal is not a great advert for being a security person in blabbing important private info about the club that employs him. Plus who in their right mind leaves car keys on a desk?

I was initially very angry. However I appreciate what Tonda achieved this season. We played some of the best to football I've seen in years with a real hard nosed refusal to give up on games.

On reflection, Iif you appoint a young coach, you have to accept that it's a learning experience for them and mistakes will be made. Clearly as long as the spying and the bullying are dealt with, and don't recur, then there is a way forward.

However any FA charges and punishments may take any decision out of our hands.

In terms of players, I agree, part of the deal with joining us is that you can leave if there is a good offer. Offers would have come in for our top players regardless of which league we were in. Other than agent talk, I'm not sure spygate will really affect this.

FrankSaint added 13:28 - May 27
The kindest thing we can say about Tonda is that he left no stone unturned in pursuit of promotion. Without the fa cup distraction I think we would have gone up in second as the players understandably protected themselves for the semi at Wembley. But, maybe we would have been undone next year with a Spygate. Now the only thing to do is to say sorry, fix our governance issues and also play hard but clean football. We cannot afford to give more bait to our many haters and the clickbait media. So no more going down holding our face with both hands after a tap on the shoulder. Let's leave that to other teams. Above all lets remember who we are and where we play. We are the Saints and we march in at St. Mary's. Let's embrace the secular meaning of that word. We can then sing our anthem with more heart and soul. Come on you Saints, get down to work. Ps and keep Tonda but give him the chance to say 'mea culpa', someinternal penalties and a holiday.

Have you never heard the expression "clear your desk"

I should imagine that all of the players and coaching staff have left Staplewood by now, and the tidier ones would have cleared up before they left. It's their summer holiday. They won't be back until the pre-season starts. I'm looking forward to the pre-season fixtures. We usually get a good European team at St Mary's. Then, after that, hopefully, Tonda will lead us to our first ever Championship title: the one advantage of not going up via the play-offs this season.

I was in the get rid of him camp at the start of this spying business. But now changed my mind .
Hopefully we can keep Tonda , the keeper and most of the squad. The players need to buy into him staying.Ive found the past 6 months style of football, fun again and hope we can bounce back 👍
I agree that the club need to be more proactive with their media work and start getting us fans onside .

Tonda is the best manager we have had in a while, I don’t believe he thought this spying was illegal but even so he is young and he learnt a lesson. We need to use every tool to get back to the premier league and he knows the squad and can get the best from the players that stay. It’s going to be harder next year and we need a quick start. If we change manager I believe we can wave give to ever returning to the top league. There will be a lot of voices for him to leave and many will be from the blue side of Hampshire.

Good article , and just to make things clear Tonda , did not do anything ilegal nor did Southampton Football Club , they broke the rules set out by the EFL. to my mind diving in the box is just as reprehensible offence.

Secondly I had to correct a Middlesborough fan who claimed that we were trespassing on MFC land, Rockcliffe Hall and its grounds are owned as a separate company to which Gibson has a controlling interest. I suspect that MFC pay little or nothing to use these facilities , i.e a back door subsidy to get round the fair play rules . Steve Gibson recently converted a £140m loan in MFC into equity , Hence his fixation with getting MFC into the Premier League at any cost
; the only way he is ever likely to get a return on his Money .

Personally I think Southampton should employ a Forensic Accountant to look at Middesborough accounts and Finacial structure.
