Southampton Set To Get Windfall As Spurs Set To Hijack Fernandes Deal
Wednesday, 1st Jul 2026 09:27

The effective opening of the transfer window is today and according to reports Saints are in line for a nice little windfall with Tottenham about to outbid Manchester United for the services of Mateus Fernandes.

One thing was for sure after West Ham's relegation and that was Mateus Fernandes was going to change clubs for the 3rd season running after his own personal 2nd relegation in a row from the Premier League.

The only thing in doubt was the fee he would go for and now according to The Daily Echo that fee is £85 million Guaranteed., with Spurs seemingly keen to avoid another last day relegation scare.

A week ago I revealed that Saints did have a sell on clause inserted into the deal when they sold Fernandes to West Ham and that Southampton were set to pocket a chunk of that sale

In that article i speculated on what could be expected from the deal that a week ago, I suggested that he could go for £60 million, but it seems that Spurs are once again throwing the cash around and the fee is said to now be £85 million.

That is a £42 million profit for West Ham and now Saints could benefit from a percentage of that, with the Echo claiming that it is likely to be 15%.

If that is the case then Saints would receive around £6.5 million.

That is a substantial chunk, that will go to the transfer kitty, especially when you consider that we are likely to net something around £20 =£25 million for Shea Charles after Manchester City have taken their cut.

Now we are in July the transfer window will now start to burst into life and it could be that Southampton will figure highly in the opening exchanges.
