Southampton At Eintracht Braunschweig The Preview Friday, 24th Jul 2026 11:40 Saints are already in Germany for a week long training camp and will take on Eintracht Braunschweig this evening in the first of two friendlies, however like the game at Eastleigh last weekend, I would not expect to anything unexpected. The game this evening kicks off at 7pm UK time, but in Germany they are an hour ahead so for those Saints supporters making the trip it is an 8pm kick off European time. Last weekend at the Silverlake Stadium saw a total of 23 players involved and I would not expect to see a much different strategy from Tonda Eckert this time out. That will probably mean a different side in each half with the odd substitution added in for good measure. The two big questions though are about Finn Azaz & Daniel Peretz, both missed the short trip across the M27 last Saturday, Peretz with a wrist injury and Azaz with a slight knock in training. It is difficult to say whether either will be involved, as Saints have not really revealed the extent of their injuries other than to say they are minor, so whether they will be risked or not will not be answered till the line ups are announced tonight. I would suspect that Azaz has a better chance of a game because wrist injuries are a little more tricky, especially if you are a goalkeeper, so I would not be surprised to see Daniel Peretz sit this one out and get another weeks rest. Other than that this game will not give much indication as to how we will shape up in the season, it will be two mixed teams and hard to really say that one is more senior than the other. Results at this stage of the pre season mean nothing, indeed I have seen great pre season results followed by terrible starts to the season. Pre season in 1991/92 season saw us win 7, draw 1 and lose 1 against a mixture of sides at new manager Ian Branfoot started to get to know a shape his squad.
But if we thought that was a good guide to the season, then we would be sadly mistaken, in the League we would lose 4 of the opening 6 fixtures, winning 1 and drawing the other, after 7 wins in pre season it would take us till March to win our 7th League game. So over the years I have grown to not take much notice of pre season games and results, especially as in the Premier League era squads have grown bigger and therefore most pre season games see most of those 24+ man squads used in many of the games. But it is still good to get a win under our belts for the feel good factor and hopefully Saints tonight will oblige.
