The Longest Day Becomes The Longest Weekend For Southampton Fans
Saturday, 26th Sep 2026 08:28

Saints supporters spent Friday looking at their phones, watching news channels and awaiting the verdict from the Football Association on Spygate. However nothing came out from FA headquarters and the big football news was about Manchester City's indiscretions.

They say that no news is good news and Saints fans hope that is the case, that those who are tasked by the FA to decide the fate of Tonda Eckert are either deliberating carefully or cannot agree on the level of punishment.

The good news is that it seems that they have not just decided to hammer the German as the EFL did to Southampton FC back in May, that they are considering that the punishment should fit the level of the offence.

They are also possibly taking into account our own legal representatives position on potential punishments.

That offence pales into insignificance when you consider that Manchester City were found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges levelled against them regarding their finances.

That to the casual onlooker is not just breaking a rule it is brandishing the rule book and burning it in the face of the football authorities and indeed every football club in the land.

It kind of makes Southampton & Tonda Eckert's crime of sending an intern to a couple of public spaces to view a training session, something that would have been perfectly acceptable just a day or so earlier, a little insignificant in contrast.

But after Friday came and went without any announcement we now have to sweat over the weekend for a ruling on Monday, I am assuming that they will not be working on this over the weekend.

I am also assuming that they had not reached a verdict on Friday and then decided to delay announcing it when the Manchester City news broke on Friday afternoon, if they did that then perhaps it could be announced over the weekend, but I would doubt it.

So in the meantime we have to spent the weekend being able to do nothing other than sit and wait.

Alternatively, Saints are legally challenging the decision by the FA.

They are working out a payment plan for Tonda to cover the Man City fine.

At least the great British press now have someone else to make up stories about and gather quotes from the insignificant ex players and managers

No consideration for the fan base is annoying. We pay good money to see Tonda or his replacement had he been sacked, lead our team through the season from the beginning but, no, the FA, due to all their dawdling and time wasting, have seen fit to leave us sitting on a precipice wondering and wondering about our future. Even the immediate appointment of a successor is going to cause some disruption with the inevitable change of tactics and player dislikes and vice-versa. The punishment should have been meted out ages ago. Tonda seems to be contrite, rather than arrogant so, is the offence so serious the FA could effectively finish his career? There's reprimand and putting the boot in. It looks suspiciously like sporting persecution.

The whole issue is totally dwarfed by the Man City 114 proved charges!

Fairs Fair, we were replaced in the playoff final by the losing semi finalist. The 2026 FA cup final should now be replayed as Man City cheated their way to the final.
